Public Street Surveillance: A Psychometric Study On The Perceived Social Risk, David J. Brooks Jan 2003

Public Street Surveillance: A Psychometric Study On The Perceived Social Risk, David J. Brooks

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

Public street surveillance, a domain of Closed Circuit Television (CCTV), has grown enormously and is becoming common place with increasing utilization in society as an all-purpose security tool. Previous authors (Ditton, 1999; Davies, 1998; Horne, 1998; Tomkins, 1998) have raised concern over social, civil and privacy issues, but there has been limited research to quantify these concerns. There are a number of core aspects that could relocate the risk perception and therefore, social support of public street surveillance. This study utilized the psychometric paradigm to quantitatively measure the social risk perception of public street surveillance. The psychometric paradigm is a …

How Ngos Can Build Peace: Landmine Clearance And Victim Assistance, Maureen Morton Dec 2002

How Ngos Can Build Peace: Landmine Clearance And Victim Assistance, Maureen Morton

The Journal of Conventional Weapons Destruction

Peacebuilding and post-conflict reconstruction are multi-disciplinary from a governance, organizational behavior, executive development and field perspective. Rarely, though, are the tools of competitive advantage, project planning and conflict resolution software used to seek linkages with non-governmental organizations (NGOs) to coordinate resources, particularly to integrate the disparate sectors of landmine and UXO clearance, victim assistance and resourcing across industries. One method is to employ “best practices” from developed countries proven to develop abilities for disabled farmers and youth in post-conflict countries as one of a number of agrarian and health care initiatives built around demining as agricultural preparation. The goal is …

“Private” Crime In Public Housing: Violent Victimization, Fear Of Crime And Social Isolation Among Women Public Housing Residents, Claire M. Renzetti, Shana L. Maier Dec 2002

“Private” Crime In Public Housing: Violent Victimization, Fear Of Crime And Social Isolation Among Women Public Housing Residents, Claire M. Renzetti, Shana L. Maier

CRVAW Faculty Journal Articles

Although public housing is typically associated with high crime rates, little research has been done on fear of crime or violent victimization experiences among public housing residents. Moreover, there are few studies that look specifically at women’s fear of crime or violent victimization experiences in public housing, despite the fact that women constitute the majority of public housing residents. These issues were examined in the present study through interviews with female public housing residents in Camden, New Jersey (NJ). The interviews reveal high rates of violent victimization, especially at the hands of intimates and acquaintances. Fear of crime is also …

Deception Detection: Study Of Information Manipulation Through Electronic Identity Theft-Email Forgery In The U.S. Military, Roy V. Rockwell

Theses and Dissertations

This research describes the results of a field experiment which examines the effects of warnings on system trust and individual awareness in government computer systems through the use of email forgery. The experiment consisted of forging a trusted government email account and trying to get government computer users to reply to a forged email address. The results revealed that warning individuals about possible email forgery did not increase their awareness or reduce their level of system thrust in the email system nor did it increase their ability to detect email forgery. The results did determine that government computer users are …

An Empirical Test Of The Rent-Shifting Hypothesis: The Case Of State Trading Enterprises, Stephen F. Hamilton, Kyle W. Stiegert Oct 2002

An Empirical Test Of The Rent-Shifting Hypothesis: The Case Of State Trading Enterprises, Stephen F. Hamilton, Kyle W. Stiegert

Economics

A central result in the theoretical literature on strategic trade is the ‘rent-shifting hypothesis’, the idea that government’s can employ trade policy as a precommitment device to transfer profit from foreign to domestic firms. To our knowledge, however, the rent-shifting hypothesis remains untested empirically. This paper constructs a theory-based empirical test of rent-shifting behavior that relies on observations of government precommitment variables employed through State Trading Enterprises (STEs). The analysis applies data on the delayed producer payment structure of the Canadian Wheat Board (CWB) and examines its merits as a rent-shifting mechanism in the international durum market. The model fails …

Reasons For The Marginal Incorporation Of The Comanches By The Spanish, Martha Mccollough Oct 2002

Reasons For The Marginal Incorporation Of The Comanches By The Spanish, Martha Mccollough

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

When the Comanches, a Native American community originally from the Great Basin region, migrated to the Southern Plains in the early 1700s, they encountered Spanish colonies, missions, and military and administrative personnel as well as newly introduced trade items. Spain attempted to incorporate the Comanches into the region's emerging political economy through a variety of means including the use of treaties, coercive force, and economic inducements. Because of the Comanches' decentralized political organization, their conquest of the Apaches, and Spain's tenuous control over its northern frontier, the Comanches successfully retained control over their own articulation within the region's political economy. …

Review Of Working The Garden: American Writers And The Industrialization Of Agriculture By William Conlogue, Mary Paniccia-Carden Oct 2002

Review Of Working The Garden: American Writers And The Industrialization Of Agriculture By William Conlogue, Mary Paniccia-Carden

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

In Working the Garden William Conlogue critiques readings of American literature dependent on pastoral assumptions, proposing instead a georgic perspective that would examine "the history of the intersections we have made among human work, human imagination, and the physical environment." While he takes a somewhat reductive view of previous critical approaches and of American applications of pastoral modes, his demonstration of the ways in which georgic questions alter our understanding of our literature promises to be of significant importance to the study of Great Plains literature.

The georgic, Conlogue explains, "explores the lived landscapes of rural experience" where "our ambiguous …

Piecing Together The Ponca Past Reconstructing Degiha Migrations To The Great Plains, Beth R. Ritter Oct 2002

Piecing Together The Ponca Past Reconstructing Degiha Migrations To The Great Plains, Beth R. Ritter

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

The twenty-first century presents opportunities, as well as limitations, for the American Indian Nations of the Great Plains. Opportunities include enhanced economic development activities (e.g., casino gambling, telecommunications, and high-tech industries) and innovative tribal programming such as language immersion programs made possible through enhanced self-governance initiatives. Limitations include familiar scripts that perpetually threaten tribal sovereignty and chronically underfunded annual appropriations for Native American health, housing, and social service programs.

The Ponca Tribe of Nebraska, terminated in 1965 and restored to federally recognized status in 1990,1 embraces these challenges by exploring the limits of self-governance, economic development opportunities, and cultural …

Drawn By The Bison Late Prehistoric Native Migration Into The Central Plains, Lauren W. Ritterbush Oct 2002

Drawn By The Bison Late Prehistoric Native Migration Into The Central Plains, Lauren W. Ritterbush

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

Popular images of the Great Plains frequently portray horse-mounted Indians engaged in dramatic bison hunts. The importance of these hunts is emphasized by the oft-mentioned dependence of the Plains Indians on bison. This animal served as a source of not only food but also materials for shelter, clothing, containers, and many other necessities of life. Pursuit of the vast bison herds (combined with the needs of the Indians' horses for pasturage) affected human patterns of subsistence, mobility, and settlement. The Lakota and Cheyenne, for instance, are described as relying heavily on bison meat for food and living a nomadic lifestyle …

The Economic Consequences Of A War With Iraq, William D. Nordhaus Oct 2002

The Economic Consequences Of A War With Iraq, William D. Nordhaus

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

Much has been written about the national-security aspects of a potential conflict in Iraq, but there are no studies of the cost. A review of several past wars indicates that nations historically have consistently underestimated the cost of military conflicts. This study reviews the potential costs of a conflict including the postwar expenses that might be required for occupation, humanitarian assistance, reconstruction, nation-building, along with the implications for oil markets and macroeconomic activity. It considers two potential scenarios that span the potential outcomes, ranging from a short and relatively conflict-free case to protracted conflict with difficult and expensive postwar reconstruction …

The State Of American Federalism, 2001–2002: Resilience In Response To Crisis, Dale Krane Oct 2002

The State Of American Federalism, 2001–2002: Resilience In Response To Crisis, Dale Krane

Public Administration Faculty Publications

The past year has been one of repeated shocks to government and the larger society. Terrorist attacks in New York City and Washington, D. C, the burst of the dot.com bubble in the stock market, a wave of corporate scandals, and a slowdown in the economy posed severe problems for officials of all governments in the federal system. The combined effects of the war on terrorism and the economic turmoil forced federal policymakers to create new agencies and to enact new policies. Slate and local governments also responded to the multiple shocks with a variety of initiatives, often independent of …
