Praxis In The Human Services As A Political Act, David G. Gil
Praxis In The Human Services As A Political Act, David G. Gil
The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
My purpose in this paper is to develop a rationale for, and to suggest approaches to, the conscious integration of a political component into professional practice. Involved in this is a re-definition or re-conceptualization of professional roles in the human services as potentially powerful means of a radical, revolutionary political strategy. The overall aim of such a political strategy is to eliminate the systemic sources and dynamics of social, economic, and political inequalities - in my view, the major underlying causes of the entire array of social problems with which the human services profess to be concerned.

Economic Imperialism And Oligopolization Of Trade In The Gold Coast: 1886-1939, Rhoda E. Howard-Hassmann
Economic Imperialism And Oligopolization Of Trade In The Gold Coast: 1886-1939, Rhoda E. Howard-Hassmann
Political Science Faculty Publications
This article will deal with the mechanisms of the economic takeover of the Gold Coast, between approximately 1885 and 1939. Two aspects of the takeover are dealt with: the progressive oligopolization of trading, shipping, and banking in the colony, and the influence which oligopolistic British firms exerted on government policy. The oligopolization resulted in the underdevelopment of the African trading class and its inability to develop into a genuine capitalist class; while the pursuance of a government policy dedicated to maintaining Ghana's role as a peripheral import-export economy resulted in the internal economic underdevelopment of the colony.

The Effects Of A Persuasive Communication On The Perception Of A Message Film, Marianell Branum Fink
The Effects Of A Persuasive Communication On The Perception Of A Message Film, Marianell Branum Fink
Retrospective Theses and Dissertations
The primary purpose of this study is to examine, in a controlled experimental situation, two variables that might have an effect upon the viewer's perception of a message film. One variable that can be expected to affect perception is the viewer's prior knowledge of the film. This study deals with one specific variable - a published review. Another variable that might affect perception is personality. This study deals with one identified personality type - authoritarian. The message film is the award-winning, five-minute, color, anti-war film, Star Spangled Banner. It was produced and directed by Roger Flint and was released in …
Humanism As Demystification, Alfred Mcclug Lee
Humanism As Demystification, Alfred Mcclug Lee
The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
Under a variety of labels, many academic disciplines focus on the unsettling impact of fresh and vivid interpersonal experiences upon pre-existing beliefs and behaviour patterns. Reference is to philosophical discussions of sophism and humanism, historical theories about frontier influences, anthropological interest in culture shock, psychiatric concern with empathy and with perceptive listening, and sociological analyses of marginality, uses of participant observation and life-history data, and clinical studies of social behavior. Their significant similarity is that they are all discussions of demystifying influences on social thought and action. They are demystifying in the sense that they tend to translate the distant, …

The Anchor, Volume 88.06: October 10, 1975, Hope College
The Anchor: 1975
The Anchor began in 1887 and was first issued weekly in 1914. Covering national and campus news alike, Hope College’s student-run newspaper has grown over the years to encompass over two-dozen editors, reporters, and staff. For much of The Anchor's history, the latest issue was distributed across campus each Wednesday throughout the academic school year (with few exceptions). In recent years The Anchor moved to monthly print issues and a more frequently updated website. The Anchor is now published in print twice per academic semester. Occasionally, the volume and/or issue numbering is irregular.

Bokkos Fulani Pastoralism: Human And Herd Regulation In A Complex Ecological Setting, Joseph V. Hickey
Bokkos Fulani Pastoralism: Human And Herd Regulation In A Complex Ecological Setting, Joseph V. Hickey
Anthropology ETDs
This is a study of a Pastoral Fulani group residing in the vicinity of Bokkos, a market village forty-seven miles south of Jos in the Federal Republic of Nigeria. The Bokkos Fulani adaptation is relatively unique among Fulani pastoralists, because they do not live at the margins of a farming community, but inhabit and pasture cattle on the land of Ron agriculturalists.
Fulani settled the uninhabited Bokkos Plains in the early 19001s after British pacification. At the same time Ron farmers began to vacate defensive clusters along the Bokkos river, and they too settled the Plains. The result of this …
