The Welfare Effort Of The United States: Know Then Thyself, Leonard S. Miller, Marleen Clark Jan 1977

The Welfare Effort Of The United States: Know Then Thyself, Leonard S. Miller, Marleen Clark

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

It seems obvious that the United States is not meeting the welfare needs of all its citizens in a adequate and equitable manner. But, it is neither clear what rearrangement of national priorities would result in more resources for welfare state usage, nor, given the resources at its disposal, is it clear what priorities and activities within the welfare state would lead to best reeting the needs of its users. Countrymen, what is to be done?

A Comparison Of Defense And Welfare Spending In The United States And The United Kingdom, 1946-1976, James L. Clayton Jan 1977

A Comparison Of Defense And Welfare Spending In The United States And The United Kingdom, 1946-1976, James L. Clayton

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

One of the most important and absorbing questions of our time is whether governments should extend or retrench their efforts toward assisting people who do not seem to be able to make it on their own. Those who believe that governments should expand their programs to help the needy argue that a compassionate and affluent society has both the ability and the responsibility to do so; those who believe that governments have already pushed too far and too fast argue that the advance of the welfare state must be halted. Closely related to this basic disagreement is the question whether …

The Welfare State Within The Military, Charles Maynard, Ann Blalock Jan 1977

The Welfare State Within The Military, Charles Maynard, Ann Blalock

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

Much has been written concerning the extent to which contemporary industrialized societies meet the accepted criteria of a "welfare state". By contrast, the literature on the welfare aspects of the military as an institution within societies is comparatively sparse. Yet internally, military establishments often exhibit many welfare state attributes. Within the military's organizational territory and authority, members are provided with a wide spectrum of comprehensive universal entitlements--social, economic, occupational, educational, and medical. The formal parameters of the U.S. military establishment's welfare entitlements give the undeniable appearance of a bonafide welfare state whose provision is significantly more benevolent and equitable than …

Social Welfare And Some Implications Of Non-Violence, Mulford Q. Sibley Jan 1977

Social Welfare And Some Implications Of Non-Violence, Mulford Q. Sibley

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

A new journal has made its appearance. It is called Soldier of Fortune and is devoted to the concerns of "professional adventurers"--that is, to those who would like to become hired violent fighters in various parts of the world. The journal opens its columns to their advertisements: "Ex-marine seeks employment as mercenary, full-time or job contract, prefers South or Central America but all offers considered." "Experienced mature fighter/seeks assignment anywhere.... " In defending his journal from the charge of encouraging brutality, the founder says: "After all, booze is brutal, cars are brutal, sex is brutal. There's a need for guns …

A 'Hedge' Against Cultural Dominance (A Review Of Counter Culture And Cultural Hegemony: Some Notes On The Youth Rebellion Of The 1960'S By A. Norman Klein), Patrick F. Mccarty Jan 1977

A 'Hedge' Against Cultural Dominance (A Review Of Counter Culture And Cultural Hegemony: Some Notes On The Youth Rebellion Of The 1960'S By A. Norman Klein), Patrick F. Mccarty

Nebraska Anthropologist

During the 1960's, student unrest became an issue of international proportions. College-age protesters participated in various forms of dissent (peaceful and violent) for various reasons. Because of their break with conventional beliefs and customs, the youth of the 60's were identified as a subculture or "counter culture". This counter culture was established to protest critical issues ignored by the dominant culture. In his article on counter culture and cultural hegemony, A. Norman Klein addresses the nature of cultural dominance in America. He argues that a study of the youth movement of the 60's reveals the true character of hegemonic culture.

Theoretical Differences In Kissinger And Schlesinger's Models Of The International System, Wayne Alan Schroeder Nov 1976

Theoretical Differences In Kissinger And Schlesinger's Models Of The International System, Wayne Alan Schroeder

Dissertations and Theses

This thesis is a study of national security decision making in the Ford Administration. The subject for study is the Kissinger- Schlesinger controversy in the Ford Administration. The thesis will attempt to prove that the differences that emerged over issues of national policy were due to deep theoretical disagreements as to the nature of the international system, the utility of power in the nuclear age and the means by which to preserve detente.

An examination of the substantive policy differences will be preceded by an examination of the conceptual disagreements between the Secretaries on topics that are fundamental to any …

On The Need For A National Energy Policy, Robert A. Weatherup, Roy G. Weatherup

UMR-MEC Conference on Energy / UMR-DNR Conference on Energy

This article is primarily about the energy shortage and possible ways of dealing with it. The article started out to be a technical article for a scientific or engineering journal. However, as time went along and as the article developed, it became obvious that there is a need for a broad, accurate, "big picture" discussion of our energy problem in a form which includes legal and political considerations.

Families Without A Home: Child-Rearing Patterns In A Palestinian Refugee Camp, Hala Jamal Hammad May 1976

Families Without A Home: Child-Rearing Patterns In A Palestinian Refugee Camp, Hala Jamal Hammad

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The purpose of this study was to investigate child rearing in a Palestinian refugee camp and the values affecting these patterns . The areas investigated were: independence, dependency, aggression, methods of control, sex role training, mother-child interaction, maternal role, maternal expectations of the child in the present time and the future, and the role of the father as perceived by the mother.

An interview was undertaken in October, 1974 at the Al Hussein refugee camp in Amman, Jordan with forty Palestinian in-camp refugee mothers. Since the review of literature did not contain specific references in the psychology, or sociology of …
