Greenland 1948-1985: From Reorganization To Home Rule And Beyond, Bent Thygesen

The Bridge

This article is not, strictly speaking, Danish American in content. However, Greenland has long been a concern of the United States. Secretary of State Seward who purchased Alaska from the Russians in 1867 gave some serious thought to the acquisition of Greenland also. Since the early days of World War 11, United States troops have been stationed in Greenland as part of our strategic defense system. The Danish American Heritage Society has always taken a broad view of what is Danish American, and we believe this article fits into that broad view.

Women, Religion, And Peace In An American Indian Ritual, Kristin Herzog Jan 1984

Women, Religion, And Peace In An American Indian Ritual, Kristin Herzog

Explorations in Ethnic Studies

The poem prefaces Leslie Marmon Silko's novel Ceremony, the story of a young American Indian who regains the wholeness and meaning of his life by rediscovering his ancient tribal roots and rituals.[1] It is a story of the American Southwest, especially the Pueblo-Laguna people. Anyone even vaguely familiar with American Indian culture knows that the groups were originally as different from each other as modern-day Swedes are from Albanians or Catalans, if not more so. There were more than 2,000 independent culture groups in Columbus's time, and they spoke 500 different languages belonging to fifty distinct language groups, some as …

Natural Monopoly And The Contestable Markets Hypothesis: Some Preliminary Results From Laboratory Experiments, Don R. Coursey, R. Mark Isaac, Vernon L. Smith

Economics Faculty Articles and Research

The concept of natural monopoly is one of the most familiar in economics. Many supposed natural monopolies are the object of widespread state, local, and federal regulation. It was in addressing issues of public utility regulation that Demsetz laid the foundation for an alternative scenario for decreasing cost markets. Demsetz's article promoted a debate over whether a formal auction system might provide a practical approach to monopoly control. This literature is rich in examining the practical difficulties of implementing such an institution. The important characteristic of the contestable markets hypothesis, as we interpret it, is that at least two firms …

Louis Xiv: Patron Of Science And Technology, E. Stewart Saunders Jan 1984

Louis Xiv: Patron Of Science And Technology, E. Stewart Saunders

Libraries Research Publications

Louis XIV during the fifty-five years of his personal reign (1661-1715) created the institutional foundations for the science and technology of France. These institutions were outwardly an attempt both to meet the needs of the French state for technical advice and to provide professional scientists with the necessary support for pure scientific research. In a less obvious sense, the origin and evolution of these institutions represented an attempt on the part of the monarchy to disentangle the pursuit of knowledge from the prevailing system of political patronage and from the political and religious speculation that fed the social conflicts of …

The Anchor, Volume 96.09: November 10, 1983, Hope College

The Anchor: 1983

The Anchor began in 1887 and was first issued weekly in 1914. Covering national and campus news alike, Hope College’s student-run newspaper has grown over the years to encompass over two-dozen editors, reporters, and staff. For much of The Anchor's history, the latest issue was distributed across campus each Wednesday throughout the academic school year (with few exceptions). In recent years The Anchor moved to monthly print issues and a more frequently updated website. The Anchor is now published in print twice per academic semester. Occasionally, the volume and/or issue numbering is irregular.
