Aircrew Training Devices: Utility And Utilization Of Advanced Instructional Features (Phase Ii-Air Training Command, Military Airlift Command, And Strategic Air Command), Donald J. Polzella

Psychology Faculty Publications

This document consists of an interim report and a final report which describe the second and third phases of a project designed to determine the utility and utilization of sophisticated hardware and software capabilities known as advanced instructional features (AIFs). Used with an aircrew training device (ATD), AIFs permit a simulator instructor to control, monitor, and fabricate simulator training missions. Phase II of the project asked 273 instructor pilots, flight engineers, and radar/navigators from Air Training Command (ATC), Military Airlift Command (MAC), and Strategic Air Command (SAC) to rate each of 16 AIFs on five seven-point rating scales. Phase III …

Computers In Social Work And Social Welfare Issues And Perspective, William H. Butterfield Mar 1986

Computers In Social Work And Social Welfare Issues And Perspective, William H. Butterfield

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

This paper provides a general overview of the areas in which technology has had significant impact. These are specifically important for social workers, since technology poses many challenges for both society and the social work profession. Most important about modern technology is that It can either improve the human condition or destroy society. With this In mind, social workers must learn about technology, so that Its benefits are understood and problems avoided. This will not occur, however, if technology is ignored or treated as something which is inherently bad because it disrupts the status gun.

Humanistic Psychology And Christian Thought: A Comparative Analysis, Doreen J. Dodgen, Mark R. Mcminn Jan 1986

Humanistic Psychology And Christian Thought: A Comparative Analysis, Doreen J. Dodgen, Mark R. Mcminn

Faculty Publications - Doctor of Psychology (PsyD) Program

The relationship between psychological humanism and Christian thought is explored and critically evaluated. Three tenets of humanistic psychology are considered from a Christian perspective. Areas of compatibility include emphases on human experience, social justice, personal responsibility, and dignity of humankind. Areas with less compatibility include different assumptions about supernaturalism, and a qualified view of the goodness ofhwnan nature from a Christian perspective.

Cultural And Economic Resilience Among The Kickapoo Indians Of The Southwest, Joseph B. Herring Jan 1986

Cultural And Economic Resilience Among The Kickapoo Indians Of The Southwest, Joseph B. Herring

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

When white explorers encountered them in their Wisconsin homeland, the Kickapoo Indians lived in separate and widely scattered bands. I Although individuals referred to themselves as Kickapoos and identified with the major tribal group, over time the dispersed bands adopted additional cultural traits suitable to different regions and conditions. Environmental factors, proximity to white settlers, missionary pressure, and interaction with other tribes all produced a drift toward cultural pluralism.

Although noted for their conservatism, the Kickapoos were willing to adopt material culture traits that were to their advantage. This trend intensified after a portion of the tribe settled in Kansas …

Ritual Pageantry In The American West A Wyoming Case Study, Audrey C. Shalinsky Jan 1986

Ritual Pageantry In The American West A Wyoming Case Study, Audrey C. Shalinsky

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

Festivals that celebrate the founding of the town or a similar historical event of local or regional significance are common throughout the United States. In this paper I analyze the annual reenactment in Thermopolis, Wyoming, of the Shoshoni tribe's cession to the whites of control over several thermal springs, an event that led to the founding of the town. I show that the reenactment is an idealized interpretation of various historical events recorded and portrayed in poetic form by a group of townspeople with the limited participation of a few Shoshoni families from Wind River Reservation. I argue that the …

Rural Social Organization In A Semiarid African Country The Case Of Botswana, Louise Formann Jan 1986

Rural Social Organization In A Semiarid African Country The Case Of Botswana, Louise Formann

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

Environmental determinism has long been discredited in explaining the social organization of pastoral and agro-pastoral peoples. I Today the effect of climate on social organization is recognized as mediated by social, economic, and political factors. 2 Thus, social organization in Botswana reflects the influence of a wide variety of factors, among them Christian missionaries, interethnic warfare, past and continuing aggression of South Africa, introduction of the iron plow, British colonialism, Boer traders, discovery of minerals (most recently diamonds), international donor aid, and so on. Over the past century there have been substantial changes in a number of important trends: life …

Review Of The Battle Of Batoche: British Small Warfare And The Entrenched Métis By Walter Hildebrandt, Paul L. A. H. Chartrand Jan 1986

Review Of The Battle Of Batoche: British Small Warfare And The Entrenched Métis By Walter Hildebrandt, Paul L. A. H. Chartrand

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

Metis readers will tend to react less than enthusiastically to even a fair portrayal of the military campaign which killed those whose deaths they commemorate in 1985. For that the author cannot be faulted. By his indiscriminate and unfortunate adoption of the colonizer's term "half-breed," however, he emphasizes that the traditional perception of the Metis remains.

[Review Of] Keith A. Murray. The Modocs And Their War, Lyle Koehler Jan 1986

[Review Of] Keith A. Murray. The Modocs And Their War, Lyle Koehler

Explorations in Sights and Sounds

In late 1872 and early 1873 the lava beds along northern California's Tule Lake became an arena of conflict between 160-odd Modoc Indians and a thousand U.S. soldiers, civilians, and their Warm Springs Apache scouts. Thread-bare clothing, a lack of water, internecine friction, and a general demoralization ultimately forced those Modocs to surrender, but not before they had inflicted great damage on the pursuing military. Keith Murray's account of the Modoc War is a quick-moving, dynamic, highly detailed narrative which reads like an action-novel. It is an intricately researched chronicle of events and includes actual conversation from participants on both …

[Review Of] Emmanuel Ngara. Art And Ideology In The African Novel, Jean Bright Jan 1986

[Review Of] Emmanuel Ngara. Art And Ideology In The African Novel, Jean Bright

Explorations in Sights and Sounds

The sub-title of this enigmatic book is "A Study of the Influence of Marxism on African Writing." The first of the two parts of the books deals primarily with definitions of Marxist aesthetics. For a serious work, not only are the cliches and terminology tiresome but the choice of quotations is unfortunate. Ngara quotes Marx's and Engel's opinion that Dickens, Thackeray, Emily Bronte and Gaskell wrote novels "whose graphic and eloquent pages have issued to the world more political and social truths than have been uttered by all the professional politicians, publicists and moralists put together." Ngara adds a pronouncement …

Boston School Desegregation: The Fallowness Of Common Ground, Robert A. Dentler Jan 1986

Boston School Desegregation: The Fallowness Of Common Ground, Robert A. Dentler

New England Journal of Public Policy

This essay scrutinizes the book by J. Anthony Lukas, Common Ground: A Turbulent Decade in the Lives of Three American Families, to assess whether it presents a valid and reliable account of the issues, people, and events it chronicles. The substantive core of the book is shown to be the politics of Boston public school desegregation. The parts played by the three families in this event are dramatically portrayed but cannot be corroborated and are not interpreted. The parts played by five major policy leaders, when tested against other evidence, are found to be distorted, questionable legends woven in …

in this issue. . .

Playing JOHN C. BURNHAM's new parlor game, "Who Is Now Great?” unexpectedly forms a negative consensus: the great men and women, like the dinosaurs, seem to belong to an earlier time, not to our own. The author wonders why, and shares his thoughts on the past, present, and future of greatness. Professor of History at The Ohio State University, with a scholarly interest in the history of psychiatry and American medical and social history, Burnham' s most recent book is on the psychoanalyst and physician Jelliffe.

ROBERT M. KHOURY and JUDITH A. SPECTOR explore the …
