Index of Texas Archaeology: Open Access Gray Literature from the Lone Star State
Within the past decade, cultural resource management has become an increasingly significant aspect of archaeological investigations in southern Texas. Twenty-five new sites were identified, recorded, and assessed as the result of a 4000-acre cultural resources survey in northeastern Duval County, southern Texas, by the Center for Archaeological Research, The University of Texas at San Antonio, from October to December 1981. The investigations were carried out under the requirements and guidelines of the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966, as amended, the Vernon Texas Civil Statute 4590f, as amended, and the Guidelines for Archeological Investigations of Mining Areas in Texas (Texas …

From Wasteland To Utopia: Changing Images Of The Canadian In The Nineteeth Century, R. Douglas Francis
From Wasteland To Utopia: Changing Images Of The Canadian In The Nineteeth Century, R. Douglas Francis
Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)
It is common knowledge that what one perceives is greatly conditioned by what one wants or expects to see. Perception is not an objective act that occurs independently of the observer. One is an active agent in the process and brings to one's awareness certain preconceived values, or a priori assumptions, that enable one to organize the deluge of objects, experiences, and impressions into some meaningful and comprehensive world view. Perception changes as new information or altered perspectives are integrated and thus, one's view of the "objective" external world is affected.

Nowhere Left To Go: Montana's Crees, Metis, And Chippewas And The Creation Of Rocky Boy's Resevation, Larry Burt
Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)
In the last third of the nineteenth century, the federal governments of Canada and the United States asserted their jurisdiction over the Great Plains through a series of treaties that established reservations for the various Indian tribes of the area. By the turn of the century, three small native groups found themselves homeless relics of a distant past long after other peoples had moved to their reservations. Several bands of Cree Indians and a number of mixed-bloods, who called themselves Metis, had used lands on both sides of the line that had become the border between the state of Montana …

Early Fur Trade On The Northern Plains: Canadian Traders Among The Mandan And Hidatsa Indians, 1738-1818., James A. Hanson
Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)
The permanent villages of farming Indians on the Upper Missouri were a central focus for trade in prehistoric times. By the beginning of the eighteenth century, both French and Spanish traders had reach ed the area, and by the early nineteenth century, the Mandan- Hidatsa villages had come to be a Parisian entrepot for the buffalo hunting tribes, the St. Louis and Canadian traders, and the artists and explorers of young America. While the drive up the Missouri from St. Louis is well documented, Wood and Thiessen have unveiled for us an exciting story of the important and early Canadian …

Scientific Research Programmes: Toward A Synthesis And Evaluation Of Crm Archaeology, Alan J. Osborn
Department of Anthropology: Faculty Publications
Archaeologists involved in conservation archaeology and/or cultural resource management have frequently been confronted with the dilemma described by Fowler (1982). Cultural resource management projects most generally have to be conducted within a restricted geographical area within a specified period of time. Many archaeologists have chosen to deal with the resource management dilemma in one of three ways. First, there are those that have chosen to view cultural resource management primarily as a professional service. Practitioners of "service" archaeology conduct archaeological surveys and excavations in order to determine the frequency, location, and extent of cultural remains within a specified area. Investigations …
[Review Of] John A. Grim. The Shaman: Patterns Of Siberian And Ojibway Healing, Ronald N. Satz
[Review Of] John A. Grim. The Shaman: Patterns Of Siberian And Ojibway Healing, Ronald N. Satz
Explorations in Sights and Sounds
John A. Grim utilizes the methodology of the fields of anthropology, mythology, psychology, and sociology to elucidate the religious meaning of shamanism as exemplified in Siberian and Ojibway societies. Although shamans have long been viewed as primordial religious personalities, a comprehensive interpretation of the shamanic religious experience has been lacking. This book provides important insights that will be of interest to scholars and general readers interested in the American Indian religious experience.

Knife River Indian Villages Archaeological Program: An Overview, F. A. Calabrese
Department of Anthropology: Faculty Publications
The Knife River Indian Villages are located in North Dakota near the confluence of the Knife and Missouri Rivers, just north of the contemporary town of Stanton, North Dakota. They lie within the area between the Garrison Dam to the north and the Oahe Reservoir to the south, the last remaining unflooded segment of the Missouri River valley in the Dakotas. Within the area are river floodplains, terraces, dissected breaks and upland rolling terrain. Forests occur on the floodplain and lower terraces with a variety of native and exotic grasses found on the breaks and uplands. A number of relatively …

Faculty Scholarship
The relationship between victimization and criminality has been widely cited in recent years. Early thinking and public perceptions about crime intuitively presumed that criminals were distinct from their victims. Crime control policies resulted which promoted the physical separation of victims from predatory offenders through "target hardening" and "defensible space." Such distinctions, however, ignored the empirical evidence on the considerable overlap between offender and victim profiles and distorted the reality of events in which persons are labelled as victims or victimizers based only on the consequences of the event. Given the homogeneous relation between victim and offender, theories of crime that …
