The Segesser Hide Paintings: History, Discovery, Art, Thomas E. Chávez Jan 1990

The Segesser Hide Paintings: History, Discovery, Art, Thomas E. Chávez

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

T here is no doubt that the Segesser hide paintings are among the most novel and important artifacts of the Spanish Colonial history of New Mexico. As aesthetic works they are striking and as hide paintings they are unique. As historical documents they have already sparked revisions in historical interpretation of the period, providing valuable information on significant factors such as modes of warfare, uniforms and clothing, and the war panoply of the Plains Indians. As artifacts, they are among the most valuable acquisitions made by the Museum of New Mexico. Most important, their presence in the Palace of the …

Plains Indians In New Mexico: The Genízaro Experiance, Russell M. Magnaghi Jan 1990

Plains Indians In New Mexico: The Genízaro Experiance, Russell M. Magnaghi

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

T he colonial period in American history must, include not only the English experience on the Atlantic shore but the Spanish story in the Southwest and the approaches to the Great Plains. l Part of the New Mexican story is the emergence of a new people who become part of our multicultural experience, the detribalized Indians of the Plains and Mountains who were given the name genfzaros and were eventually absorbed into Pueblo-Spanish society. 2 The Spanish had tried to implement their Indian policy on the Great Plains, but frustrated by the environment and the native people, they remained in …

[Review Of] James L. Sexton. Campesino: The Diary Of A Guatemalan Indian, Luis L. Pinto Jan 1990

[Review Of] James L. Sexton. Campesino: The Diary Of A Guatemalan Indian, Luis L. Pinto

Explorations in Sights and Sounds

Often political violence in Guatemala is analyzed as if it were identical to political violence in other Central American countries. On account of the desire to simplify this political and economical reality in the public debate, there is a tendency to see the conflict as the result of the international rivalries between East and West. The literature of this conflict deals primarily with the view from government officials and the opinion of the representatives of the transnationals economically involved in the area.

Explorations in Ethnic Studies

Sometime in the pre-dawn hours of July 16, 1979, an earthen dam holding back wastes produced by United Nuclear Corporation's uranium mill parted in Church Rock, New Mexico. From the widening breach poured ninety four million gallons of highly contaminated effluent and 1,100 tons of wet slurry sands.

The Effects Of Political Instability On Economic Growth: A Case For Sub-Saharan Africa, Gregory Wayne Willis Jan 1990

The Effects Of Political Instability On Economic Growth: A Case For Sub-Saharan Africa, Gregory Wayne Willis

Masters Culminating Experiences (1993-2011)

The countries of Sub-Saharan Africa have experienced both poor economic performance and substantial political instability since their independence. There have been numerous studies investigating the possible relationship between political instability and economic growth. The common approach to investigating this relationship is to measure the effect of economic growth on the probability of political instability. This paper takes the opposite approach by investigating the effects of political instability on economic growth. We believe that political instability disrupts the economic system causing a reduction in growth. We measure this effect using regression analysis to estimate two models we have developed. The first …

Incidental Effects Of Church Activity On Development, Landscapes And Culture: An Example From Tonga, Sosaia Hakaumotu Naulu Jan 1990

Incidental Effects Of Church Activity On Development, Landscapes And Culture: An Example From Tonga, Sosaia Hakaumotu Naulu

Theses and Dissertations

The effect of religious bodies upon the economy, landscape and culture of developing countries is a topic that needs further study. Intuitively, mission work in such lands would seems to have some impact but the actual conditions and changes are not carefully defined. This thesis seeks to describe one instance, the effect of the LDS Church upon Tonga. Here the Church is a fairly recent entrant into the land and its effects may readily be seen.

The LDS Church was found to play a modest role in the economy and a much greater role in changing landscapes. It is seen …

From the Review

In a widely reported address at Tulane University in October 1986, Attorney General Edwin Meese chastised the Supreme Court for its habitual conflation of constitutional law and the Constitution.

Meese is no intellectual, and his remarks were not intended as academic musings; thus, the speech may have been appropriately judged from a political perspective, condemned by liberals and applauded by conservatives for roughly the same reasons. Unfortunately obscured by the …

Soviet National Security Decision Making, Kurt M. Campbell, Jeffrey W. Legro Jan 1990

Soviet National Security Decision Making, Kurt M. Campbell, Jeffrey W. Legro

Political Science Faculty Publications

Winston Churchill's characterization of the Soviet Union as a riddle wrapped in a mystery inside an enigma may overstate Western understanding of the USSR's national security decision-making. The evidence in this domain is sparse, and what we do have is incomplete. Indeed, the Soviets have taken extraordinary steps to maintain the black box that shields how and why their decisions are made. With these caveats in mind, knowledge of Soviet decision-making can be summed up in a few general statements. First, the Soviet leadership is an integrated political-military body, where political authority is dominant, but where the professional military retains …

Racism In Advanced Capitalist Society: Comments On William J. Wilson's The Truly Disadvantaged, Edna Bonacich

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

Let me begin with words of praise. Bill Wilson's The Truly Disadvantaged is a serious and important work. In it he alerts the nation to the alarming rise of social dislocation in Black inner city communities. But rather than joining with the conservative chorus which dominates political debate about this issue, Wilson focuses on the social structure, especially joblessness, as the key to the whole network of pathologies. Black inner city joblessness is, in turn, explained by large-scale economic shifts, interacting with a legacy of past racial discrimination, as well as various demographic factors. The result is the construction of …

Towards The 21st Century: Long Cycles And The Future Of The United States, John Davis

Graduate Program in International Studies Theses & Dissertations

With a plethora of declinist literature positing the decline and eventual dissolution of the American order, "Towards the Twenty-first Century: Long Cycles and the Future of the United States" offers a new perspective on the world leadership position of the United states. Using the literature on long cycles as its instrument, this study argues that there will be a continuation of U.S. systemic leadership through the twenty-first century.

Cultural Value Differences In Arguments Between Presidents Ronald Reagan And Oscar Arias, Juan Carlos Flores Nov 1989

Cultural Value Differences In Arguments Between Presidents Ronald Reagan And Oscar Arias, Juan Carlos Flores

Dissertations and Theses

Costa Rica embodies many of the characteristics which the United States would like to foster in Central America and elsewhere. In recent years, however, misunderstandings have often been present in the development of relations between both nations, and leaders. These differences have been particularly visible between Presidents Reagan and Arias when carrying out their foreign policies towards Central America.

Recent developments in warfare, social and political unrest and economic crises in the region added to the emergence of a Central American political leadership--independent of U.S. decision making-have increased international misunderstandings between both political speakers. These misunderstandings are shown by Reagan …

Challenges Confronting Metropolitan Portland's Transportation Decision-Making Regime, Sheldon Edner, Sy Adler, Peter B. Morris

Center for Urban Studies Publications and Reports

In this paper we discuss the structure and dynamics of this consensus process through an exploration of a series of challenges to the regime. These challenges include: (1) cultivating new sources of project finance, as the federal government reduces its contribution; and (2) integrating transport projects with regional and local land use plans designed to manage urban growth; in the context of (3) intensifying competition between -business centers within the region, as rapidly growing suburban areas seek transport projects that will facilitate locally-oriented economic growth. We first discuss the institutional and normative elements of the regional consensus process in historical …

Training Program Evaluation For A Prototype Command, Control & Communication System: Soldier Requirements, Performance & Feedback, Natalie Dancho Aug 1989

Training Program Evaluation For A Prototype Command, Control & Communication System: Soldier Requirements, Performance & Feedback, Natalie Dancho

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

An Army training program was evaluated in order to present recommendations for program refinement. The training program, developed as part of two larger Army combat development (CD) studies (DuBois & Smith, 1989a, 1989b), represents an attempt to define program design requirements for training tank commanders to use the Intervehicular Information System (IVIS). IVIS is a computer-based command, control, and communications system proposed for future M1A1 tank upgrades. Twenty-four Army tank commanders (TCs) participated in the research effort. TCs were of various rank and age. Training and testing were conducted over a 4 day period. Training lasted 1-1/2 days followed by …
