Outplacement Services : A Search For The Tools And Strategies That Improve Organizational Effectiveness, Geri P. Stowers

Theses

If outplacement is considered a necessity in this age of continuous mergers, acquisitions, and downsizing, then why do most companies find it difficult to utilize these services for all employees?

This thesis will assess previous research on outplacement and evaluate the reasons for limited use. A four page questionnaire containing nineteen questions was mailed to forty-two pharmaceutical and related industries. The survey questions focused on why and how these industries utilize outplacement services. A comparison study was done of the research versus what the pharmaceutical industries are actually practicing.

The results of the study revealed that most companies really do …

An Analysis Of Four Performance Techniques For Paraprofessional Direct-Care Staff Working With Developmentally Disabled Adults In Group Homes, L. Martin Grabijas Apr 1990

An Analysis Of Four Performance Techniques For Paraprofessional Direct-Care Staff Working With Developmentally Disabled Adults In Group Homes, L. Martin Grabijas

Dissertations

The habilitation and training of the developmentally disabled has improved markedly in the last two decades. The creation of small, community-based living facilities has allowed these individuals to move from restrictive settings into the community where training in daily living skills can occur in a more natural fashion. While this movement has been positive for the consumer, the preparedness of the staff working in those facilities has not been adequately addressed. Many human service agencies use a generic training package to prepare their staff, yet current research indicates that such training is less than adequate, both in terms of preparing …

Foreword, Rosabeth Moss Kanter Mar 1990

Foreword, Rosabeth Moss Kanter

New England Journal of Public Policy

Two significant facts are apparent from reading this volume. First, the authors are themselves examples of women overcoming barriers, breaking into formerly all-male domains, succeeding against the odds, and exercising economic, political, and educational leadership — on behalf of other women as well as on behalf of the institutions they serve. Thus their own lives are eloquent rebuke to anyone who still thinks that women cannot manage effectively in any realm, or that women must always take second place to men, or that family responsibilities make women less serious about public responsibilities, or that women fail to help one another; …

Discussion highlights the tension between legal compliance and attitudinal change, explores how tenure criteria emphasizing quantity over quality of research can disadvantage underrepresented scholars, and outlines strategies such as early mentoring, targeted doctoral recruitment, inclusive search processes, community integration support, and …

Coming Up Short: No Quick Fixes, Elmer E. Baker Jr Jan 1990

Coming Up Short: No Quick Fixes, Elmer E. Baker Jr

Association for Communication Administration Bulletin

This article critiques the belief that minority faculty underrepresentation can be remedied through quick fixes, showing instead that entrenched structural and cultural forces require sustained, systemic responses. Drawing on national doctorate statistics, affirmative action surveys, and illustrative programs at Duke, Bucknell, and Stanford, this article traces how shrinking doctoral pipelines, lucrative private sector opportunities, rising tuition, and inadequate precollege preparation erode the supply of prospective scholars of color. It further reveals that once hired, minority professors encounter disproportionate advising loads, heavy committee service, isolation, and tenure expectations emphasizing quantitative publication metrics. Employing perspectives from higher education administration, diversity research, organizational …

Emphasis is placed on institutional commitment, proactive attitude, and sustained innovation as levers for equity, organizational resilience, and academic excellence. …

Faith And Leadership: The Spiritual Journeys Of Transformational Leaders, Rita M. Marinoble Edd

Dissertations

Transformational leadership, as it has come to be understood in the study of leadership, is a relationship among people that is characterized by mutual purposes that transcend daily concerns--purposes directed is some way toward the common good. Transformational leaders hold and articulate vision, shape values, and engage themselves and others in efforts that somehow benefit the human community. Faith development and the spiritual journey can be viewed as providing a context for transformational leadership because they involve an individual's search for self-transcendence and ultimate meaning in life. A Study Of Factors Contributing To Achieving And Sustaining School Effectiveness In Elementary Schools, Janet A. Hageman Chrispeels Edd

Dissertations

An effective school is one in which there are overall high levels of achievement sustained over time and in which students from the lower socioeconomic (SES) subgroups are performing at levels comparable to higher SES groups. Through a case study methodology, the author analyzed the degree of effectiveness in eight elementary schools and factors that contributed to attaining this level of effectiveness. California Pioneers In Speech Pathology: 1915 Through 1951, Looking Back For The Future, Sandra L. Singleton Edd

Dissertations

Speech pathologists are the only professionals educated and trained to treat human communication disorders. They work in a variety of settings such as schools, hospitals, and private practice. Despite the essential and integrated role speech pathology holds in society, it is continually threatened by internal concerns and external pressures. Regardless of the issues, those who cannot find resolve often call for leadership. When current situations do not yield solutions readily, an historical perspective may serve to provide answers or guidance. Historical documentation was available in detail regarding the foundation of speech pathology in Iowa and Wisconsin, in addition to published …

Conversion Of The Coldwater Regional Mental Health Center: The Impact On Employees, Connie Dunham Dykman

Dissertations

The objective of this study was to determine what effects the conversion of the Coldwater Regional Mental Health Center from a facility serving developmentally disabled residents to one serving mentally ill residents had on the lives of its employees.

Deinstitutionalization has been taking place nationwide at the same time prisons have been expanding. In Coldwater, Michigan, buildings that were left empty as a result of deinstitutionalizing mentally retarded individuals were taken over by the Department of Corrections to be used as prisons. This action inspired advocates for retarded citizens to call for the closure of the Coldwater Regional Center. Instead …

Organization Design And Development, Chang-Wang Chen

Theses

As our knowledge of the behavioral science continues to increase, so also does our use of that knowledge. One of the most rapidly expanding fields in the development and application of behavioral science knowledge is organization development (OD). Not only are the behavioral sciences receiving more attention in all types of organizations, but many different countries are also becoming more involved in the human aspects of work. The innovations undertaken by McDonald's and Yamazaki Baking in the area of job enrichment is one indication of such interest.

Human needs are changing rapidly, as is the world itself. In terms of …

Medicaid And Medicaid Cost Containment In Massachusetts, Fredric A. Waldstein Jan 1989

Medicaid And Medicaid Cost Containment In Massachusetts, Fredric A. Waldstein

New England Journal of Public Policy

The purpose of this article is to describe Medicaid's financial structure and examine cost containment efforts to limit future growth of the program, particularly pertaining to Massachusetts. The principal focus is the Massachusetts Department of Public Welfare and the Massachusetts Medicaid Fraud Control Unit, the two agencies most responsible for Medicaid cost containment in the commonwealth. Because elected officials are unwilling to face directly the troublesome issues surrounding Medicaid and its growth, the government agencies responsible for cost containment have been left to define the scope of the problem, design remedial strategies, and evaluate their success. This process is found …
