Age And Sex As Influences On The Food Preferences Of Preschool Children, Tish Wilson May 1976

Age And Sex As Influences On The Food Preferences Of Preschool Children, Tish Wilson

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

A descriptive -exploratory study on the influences of age and sex on the food preferences of preschool children was undertaken to add to the knowledge of the effects of self-selection on the foods chosen and the order in which they were eaten.

Twenty-eight preschool children (fourteen two-year-olds and fourteen four and one-half-year-olds) were given two trials in which they named, selected, and ate foods from a predetermined array of seven food items.

The results indicate that there is a difference in the order in which the children of this study ate the food items. Both age groups selected candy first, …

The Effect Of Patterned Visual Stimulation On Visual Activity And Feeding Behavior During The Feeding Period In Human Newborn Infants, Robert H. Anderson May 1976

The Effect Of Patterned Visual Stimulation On Visual Activity And Feeding Behavior During The Feeding Period In Human Newborn Infants, Robert H. Anderson

Student Work

The relationship between patterned visual stimulation and behavior in newborn human infants has been studied in a variety of situations (Fantz, 196 3; Hershenson, 1965; Haith, 1965; Bruner, 1968; Salapatek, 1968; Wagner, 1972; Friedman 1972; Boismier, 1972). Typically, the effect of visual stimulation on the behavior of newborn infants during the feeding period has not been studied. This omission may in part be related to studies by Haith (1965) and Bruner (1968) who, in the investigation of the effects of visual stimulation on nonnutritive.sucking rates, concluded that newborns are virtually incapable of looking and sucking at the same time. Bruner, …

An Examination Of "Right To Treatment" Standards: Mental Health Policy Within The Context Of The State Hospital System, Kathryn Glass May 1976

An Examination Of "Right To Treatment" Standards: Mental Health Policy Within The Context Of The State Hospital System, Kathryn Glass

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

This paper discusses the use of court-imposed standards for public mental hospitals as a method of improving public mental health services. The standards set out in Wyatt v. Stickney are examined, and the author concludes that if implemented nationally such standards would transform the public hospitals. In addition, implementation would alter the power structure of mental health workers, effect the allocation of state and federal funds, and influence the larger system of mental health services. Socio-economic characteristics of public mental hospital patients, and an assessment of present care in this system are presented as central issues in mental health policy …

Effect Of Feeding Frequency And Caloric Intake On Weight Reduction In Obese Females, Richard Robert Weber

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Forty-five obese female volunteers were randomly assigned to one of six experimental groups required to consume their daily food intake according to the following feeding frequencies: (a) three isocaloric meals, (b) six isocaloric meals, (c) three isocaloric vii meals, (d) three meals in the proportion of 1/4:1/4:2/4, (e) six isocaloric meals, and (f) ad libitum (i.e., eight or more isocaloric meals). Members of the first two groups received dietary, nutritional, and exercise management information, while women in the remaining groups received instruction in behavioral control procedures in addition to the aforementioned educative treatment.

Experimental manipulations failed to produce a statistically …

The Effect Of A Nutrition Program On Knowledge Of Nutrition And Nutrition Attitudes And Practices Of Fifth Grade Students In Granite School District, Nancy Brubaker Sorensen

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The purpose of this study was to evaluate a six week nutrition program in terms of its effect on nutrition knowledge and its effect on food practices and attitudes. A survey of the dietary food intake was also made. Fifth grade students in Granite School District, Salt Lake City, Utah, were the participants. A pretest and a postest were used to determine the effect of the program. The tests showed that cognitive knowledge increased in many areas, attitudes became more positive and there was little improvement in dietary intake. Dietary intake was low in fruits, vegetables and milk but adequate …

The Conflicts Between Female Inmates' Needs And Prisoners' Goals, Aline L. Mohr Apr 1976

The Conflicts Between Female Inmates' Needs And Prisoners' Goals, Aline L. Mohr

IUSTITIA

A comparison of the purposes behind the existence of male and female institutions reveals that several common goals exist: custody, deterrence, and rehabilitation. An examination of these goals of women's prisons can be best understood in the context of whom they are aimed to serve. If the goals are to serve society alone, then the custody of female offenders is undoubtedly viewed as an accomplished goal, since society is protected and secure from the infliction of criminal acts by these female offenders. However, if the goals are directed at the inmates as well, deterrence of further criminal activity and rehabilitation …

New Mexico Labor Market Review, Employment Security Commission Of New Mexico Mar 1976

New Mexico Labor Market Review, Employment Security Commission Of New Mexico

Historic Publications

The New Mexico Labor Market Review was prepared by the Research and Statistics section for the Employment Security Commission of New Mexico for February of 1976. It is a report on the state's employment and economic activity; total unemployment rose but was expected by seasonal patterns so the adjusted unemployment rate stayed the same from January 1976. New Mexico's unemployment rate was lower than the nations: 6.9% and 7.6%, respectively. This was from a more-than-expected increase in employment across multiple industries (mostly state government).
