The Anchor, Volume 90.02: September 16, 1977, Hope College

The Anchor: 1977

The Anchor began in 1887 and was first issued weekly in 1914. Covering national and campus news alike, Hope College’s student-run newspaper has grown over the years to encompass over two-dozen editors, reporters, and staff. For much of The Anchor's history, the latest issue was distributed across campus each Wednesday throughout the academic school year (with few exceptions). In recent years The Anchor moved to monthly print issues and a more frequently updated website. The Anchor is now published in print twice per academic semester. Occasionally, the volume and/or issue numbering is irregular.

Foods Of Juvenile, Brood Hen, And Post-Breeding Pintails In North Dakota, Gary Krapu, George Swanson Aug 1977

Foods Of Juvenile, Brood Hen, And Post-Breeding Pintails In North Dakota, Gary Krapu, George Swanson

United States Geological Survey, Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center: Publications

The Pintail (Anas acuta) is a common to abundant nesting species in North Dakota, becoming more numerous during years of favorable water conditions and less so during drought. Stewart and Kantrud (1974) estimated breeding-populations of 304,000, 111,000 and 379,000 pairs in the Prairie Pothole Region of North Dakota during 1967-69, respectively. We studied food habits of juvenile and adult Pintails during the brood-rearing and post-breeding periods in North Dakota to learn their food requirements during these phases of the life cycle. Food habits of flightless juveniles have been studied in Alberta (Sugden 1973) and limited information on downy …

The Mentally Retarded's Right To Meaningful Treatment: A Review Of Legal And Psychological Literature, Susan Katherine Peters Jul 1977

The Mentally Retarded's Right To Meaningful Treatment: A Review Of Legal And Psychological Literature, Susan Katherine Peters

Dissertations and Theses

A review of legal provisions and practices and current psychological theory and research concerning the mentally retarded indicated inconsistencies between the law and current theory, Laws have been based on archaic models which fail to consider the heterogeneity of those classified as retarded and their potential for development and training. Retardation professionals have agreed that normalization of institutionalized mentally retarded and mainstreaming in education are preferable principles. Research comparing the effects of community living and institutionalization and effects of special and integrated classes was sparse and inconclusive; the major thrust of research has been on the 4% of all mentally …

Aboriginal Exploitation Of Marine Food Resources, Alan J. Osborn Jul 1977

Aboriginal Exploitation Of Marine Food Resources, Alan J. Osborn

Department of Anthropology: Theses and Student Research

Anthropological interest in human exploitation of resources has increased considerably during the last decade. Archaeological and ethnological literature concerning man's utilization of the world's oceans is relatively abundant and there are now several on-going anthropological research programs, e.g., Aleutian Islands, Pacific Northwest Coast, California, Hawaii, Australia, New Zealand, Peru, Ecuador, Chile, and Southern Africa which focus primarily on maritime adaptations. The purpose of this study is threefold: (1) to suggest that anthropological assumptions regarding marine food resources and their use are inadequate; (2) to examine marine ecosystems with respect to structure and dynamics, primary productivity, ecological efficiencies, distributional and quantitative …

Nutritional Security And The Strategy Of Purchasing: The Coastal Miskito Indians, Eastern Nicaragua, Dorothy Jean Cattle Jun 1977

Nutritional Security And The Strategy Of Purchasing: The Coastal Miskito Indians, Eastern Nicaragua, Dorothy Jean Cattle

Anthropology ETDs

Field research was conducted in an isolated Miskito Indian village on the east coast of Nicaragua.

The research presented here is based on the general proposition that a productive way of monitoring and understanding the impact and interrelationships of economics and subsistence is through examining the nutritional process. Economic change involving the sole of a traditional subsistence resource for cash is a particular example of a brooder phenomenon which occurs in many developing areas. Consideration of the larger problem may be phrased: the nutritionaI process may be negatively related to economic change. This negative relationship between nutrition and economics involves …
