Hiv Estimation Using Population-Based Surveys With Non-Response: A Partial Identification Approach, Oyelola A. Adegboye, Tomoki Fujii, Denis H. Y. Leung, Siyu Li
Research Collection School Of Economics
HIV estimation using data from the demographic and health surveys (DHS) is limited by the presence of non-response and test refusals. Conventional adjustments such as imputation require the data to be missing at random. Methods that use instrumental variables allow the possibility that prevalence is different between the respondents and non-respondents, but their performance depends critically on the validity of the instrument. Using Manski's partial identification approach, we form instrumental variable bounds for HIV prevalence from a pool of candidate instruments. Our method does not require all candidate instruments to be valid. We use a simulation study to evaluate and …

Medical Practice As Rhetorical Art Functional Medicine’S Therapeutic Partnership, Cristina Elena De León-Menjivar
English Theses & Dissertations
The current rates of provider burnout are at an all-time high, and our healthcare system is currently seeing numerous providers leave the system. The U.S. Surgeon General has deemed burnout rates at crisis levels, creating an exigency for research and work to help ameliorate this issue. One main issue at the heart of provider burnout is the idea of meaning and purpose in one’s professional life, and Functional Medicine methodology argues that it provides the means by which it can mitigate burnout while improving professional fulfillment and joy through deeper connections with patients. Their methodology is rooted in a concept …

Examining The Physical Activity Experiences Of Blind And Visually Impaired Women, Lindsay E. Ball
Human Movement Studies & Special Education Theses & Dissertations
Substantial research has indicated that blind and visually impaired adults often do not meet physical activity guidelines, and therefore, are not experiencing the numerous affordances of physical activity participation. However, those who report meeting physical activity guidelines express higher rates of health-related quality of life. Largely, the research examining the physical activity behaviors and perspectives of blind and visually impaired adults have been survey studies leaving a rich description of their physical activity experiences unexplored. The overall aim of this project was to engage with blind or visually impaired women to understand their experiences accessing and participating in physical activity, …
Language Discrimination Using Bilingual Picture Exchange For Culturally And Linguistically Diverse Children With Autism Spectrum Disorder, River Waits
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Recent research suggests that one-fifth of United States households use non-English languages in the home setting. Ethically and effectively supporting culturally and linguistically diverse (CLD) clients (e.g., autistic individuals) presents a growing challenge to practitioners of Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA). Though efforts to address the linguistic needs of the population have grown in recent years, current literature focuses on language selection for monolingual services and underemphasizes the need for bilingual service provision. Studies were conducted to (I) evaluate the efficacy of bilingual picture exchange (i.e., mand response) across items, speakers, and languages (i.e., English and Spanish) as well as (II) …

Dampak Program Bantuan Sosial Sebagai Intervensi Gizi Sensitif Terhadap Status Stunting Pada Balita, Nasa Milta Sahara, Dwini Arianto, Mahar Santoso
Jurnal Ekonomi Kesehatan Indonesia
Stunting is a significant issue for nations, affecting both public health and economic development. It results from a combination of direct and indirect causes. The government addresses stunting through specific nutritional interventions targeting direct causes and sensitive nutritional interventions for indirect causes. Given the strong link between stunting and poverty, social assistance programs (BANSOS) such as the Family Hope Program (PKH) and Rice for the Poor (RASKIN) are crucial in combating stunting by improving socioeconomic conditions. This study analyzes the impact of these social assistance programs on stunting in children under five, using data from the 2007 and 2014 Indonesian …

Assessing The Impact Of Tuberculosis On Economic Growth In Asean Countries: A Conceptual Framework And Panel Data Analysis, Agus Fitriangga, Alex Alex
Jurnal Ekonomi Kesehatan Indonesia
Tuberculosis (TB) remains a major global health issue, particularly in Southeast Asia, where its impact extends beyond public health to affect economic performance. This study evaluates the economic implications of TB incidence on gross domestic product (GDP) growth across eight ASEAN countries from 2000 to 2020. We employed a panel data regression approach, utilizing Common Effect Model (CEM), Fixed Effects Model (FEM), and Random Effects Model (REM) to analyze the relationship between TB incidence and economic growth. The dataset included annual GDP figures, TB incidence rates, foreign direct investment (FDI), labor force size, and trade openness, sourced from international databases. …
A Comparative Review Of Soil Carbon Sequestration Methods In Brazil’S Agriculture, Skylar Cheng
A Comparative Review Of Soil Carbon Sequestration Methods In Brazil’S Agriculture, Skylar Cheng
Discussions
Brazil is under unique pressure to adopt sustainable agricultural practices due to its intricate biodiversity and globally dominant agricultural sector. Increasing soil degradation, agricultural land expansion, and rising levels of atmospheric carbon are nationwide concerns that require multifaceted solutions. Integrated agricultural systems, which rehabilitate soils through crop, forage, and livestock rotation as well as biochar—a carbon-rich soil amendment—can address such concerns. These sustainable farming practices improve carbon sequestration and soil fertility; however, uptake remains minimal due to environmental, economic, and policy barriers. Accordingly, this paper proposes a comprehensive model of integrated systems and biochar, in which the benefits of one …
Examining The Role Of Language In Inhibitory Control Development Within The Context Of Early Poverty, Rita Lynn Taylor
Examining The Role Of Language In Inhibitory Control Development Within The Context Of Early Poverty, Rita Lynn Taylor
Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
Inhibitory control (IC) is a component of executive function that has been shown to be important for tasks which require self-regulation such as future-planning, decision-making, and prosocial interpersonal interactions. Some Vygotskian researchers have proposed that language ability in early life allows for improved IC and subsequent self-regulation via the internalization of rule systems. While some studies have demonstrated evidence for this internalization, no studies to date have examined impacts of language on inhibitory control performance amongst individuals from financially under resourced backgrounds. The current study aimed to determine whether and/or how childhood financial deprivation altered performance on IC tasks across …

The Application Of Multi-Isotope Analysis To Assist In Geoprofiling Unidentified Decedents Within Florida, Liotta D. Noche-Dowdy
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The biochemistry of human tissues can provide information for geoprofiling (geographic birthplace or migration patterns) of an unidentified decedent. Utilizing isotope analyses (both stable and radiogenic) from teeth, bone, nails, and/or hair reveals specific isotopic information that correlates to diverse geographic regions reflecting an individual’s birthplace and migration patterns. Isotope analysis of enamel and bone has been employed in bioarchaeology for decades to reconstruct the diet, health, and migration patterns of past populations. Isotope ratios measured from enamel can then be compared to isotope ratios measured from bone of the individual to track patterns of migration. The enamel from the …

Introduction: Observing parents’ body-focused behaviours during middle childhood is one of the initial ways in which children model their perceptions of pro-health attitudes and their connection to physical attractiveness. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between parents' health behaviours, their appearance, and the perceptions of adult body types (skinny, medium, obese) by their five-year-old children. Moreover, the role of gender in the above relationship for both children and parents was also examined. Materials and methods: This study participants were 680 families with five-year-old children (330 girls). Participation was limited to the moth-er-father-child triad. The Beauty and Health Scale, Healthy …
Integrity, Flexibility, And Balance: How Change Works In Psychotherapy, David Pincus
Integrity, Flexibility, And Balance: How Change Works In Psychotherapy, David Pincus
Psychology Faculty Books and Book Chapters
Psychotherapy may be the most tested form of health intervention and also one of the most mysterious. Clinical trials, and meta-analyses of these trials, have repeatedly demonstrated the effectiveness of psychotherapy, while also failing to uncover any clear-cut and consistent understanding of how psychotherapy works. This lack of understanding has driven the field to develop 500 supposedly distinct, yet equivalently effective “theories.” The field suffers from barriers to scientific discovery, barriers to therapist training, and barriers to people seeking help for their psychosocial problems. This chapter tackles the mystery of how therapy works by examining the shortcomings of modern medical …
Legalized Sports Betting And Mental Health, Brad R. Humphreys, Jane Ruseski
Legalized Sports Betting And Mental Health, Brad R. Humphreys, Jane Ruseski
Economics Faculty Working Papers Series
Since the Supreme Court declared the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act of 1992 unconstitutional in 2018, 38 states and the District of Columbia legalized face to face and/or on-line betting on sports. A potential unintended consequence of legalized sports betting is an increased risk for mental health disorders and problem gambling. Using a staggered difference-in differences framework, we exploit variation in timing of adoption of legal sports betting across states to evaluate the impact of these laws on mental health outcomes. We combine data on when states passed laws to legalize gambling with data from the Behavioral Risk Factor …

An Examination Of The Impact Of Court-Appointed Fines And Fees: How Governmental Reliance On These Expenses Is Harming Vulnerable Communities, Rachel Elizabeth Couche
Dissertations and Theses
Fines and fees are commonplace in the United States criminal justice system as a form of punishment for both minor and severe offenses. While substantial research has demonstrated that these financial consequences disproportionately affect certain communities, studies that depict a narrative of these impacts are vastly underrepresented in the field. This project expands upon past literature by delving into the effects of these practices on individuals and their families. The current study outlines the findings from a content analysis of twelve semi-structured interviews on the impacts of fines and fees in Oregon. The findings create a deeper understanding of how …
Factors Associated With Functioning In Older Black Adults, Katrail D. Davis
Factors Associated With Functioning In Older Black Adults, Katrail D. Davis
LSU Master's Theses
Activities of daily living can be simple tasks such as bathing, showering, toileting or as complex as managing finances, driving, and preparing meals. Independence in everyday functioning has been associated with successful aging and declines in functioning may be indicative of pathological cognitive decline. Social determinants of health, like economic status and access to health care, also play a role in everyday functioning. Understanding these factors are of particular importance for older Black adults who have had long-standing disparate access to care, education, and treatments. The current study aimed to evaluate social determinants of health, more specifically social engagement, as …

Who Helps Tsimane Children And Adults?, Eric Schniter, Daniel K. Cummings, Paul L. Hooper, Jonathan Stieglitz, Benjamin C. Trumble, Hillard S. Kaplan, Michael D. Gurven
ESI Working Papers
We examine various forms of helping behavior among Tsimane Amerindians of Bolivia, focusing on the provision of shelter, childcare, food, sickcare, cultural influence, and traditional story knowledge. Kin selection theory traditionally explains nepotistic nurturing of youth by closely related kin. However, less attention has been given to understanding the help provided by individuals without close genetic relatedness. To explain who provides various forms of help, we evaluate support for several predictions derived from kin selection theory. Our results show that helpers who are most often closely related and from an older generation tend to provide more costly forms of help …

Makara Human Behavior Studies in Asia
Athletic Identity (AthID) is an aspect of the self-concept that refers to how one identifies with the role of an athlete and seeks acknowledgment of that role. This identity is not salient in all individuals, but AthID is activated for those who regard their athletic role as significant. Our objective was to develop a theoretical model to elucidate how Filipino para-athletes can cultivate their distinct athletic identity after acquiring a disability. The present study explored the athletic identities of 12 Filipino para-athletes, aged 24 to 63, who developed physical impairment and continued participating and competing in their chosen sports. Using …

Impact Of Physical Intimate Partner Violence On Postpartum Depression And Breastfeeding Duration In American Indian And Alaska Native Women, Zoe Resnick Milavetz Green, Marcia Bennett, Abby Hughes-Scalise, James Theisen, Julie Beans
Theses and Graduate Projects
In Alaska, 46 to 91 percent of American Indian and Alaska Native women have experienced physical intimate partner violence (IPV), compared to all women in other states, where the prevalence ranges from seven to 51 percent (Tjaden & Thoennes, 2000). Experiencing physical IPV has negative consequences on the mother’s physical and mental well-being, and has been associated with increased vulnerability to postpartum depression (PPD). Compared to other populations, American Indian and Alaska Native women are at greater risk for PPD due to less access to resources and less research on treatments (MacDorman, 2011). Additionally, American Indian and Alaska Native women …

Innovate And Create Novel Mycoinsecticide System To Promote Green Development Of Agriculture, Ding Ding, Feng Jiang, Lili Cao, Le Kang
Bulletin of Chinese Academy of Sciences (Chinese Version)
The long-term irrational use of chemical pesticides has led to severe ecological, environmental, and human safety concerns, although chemical pesticides play an important role in increasing crop yields. In response, China has issued a series of policies to reduce the use of chemical pesticides, aiming to ensure food and agricultural safety while promoting high-quality agricultural development. Reducing the usage of chemical pesticides must be complemented by the adoption of biological pesticides. Globally, biological pesticides currently account for approximately 40% of total pesticide usage in many countries. Mycoinsecticide, characterized by their environmental friendliness, sustainability, and low resistance development, represents an important …

The Recreational Ice Fishing And Ancillary Retail Communities On A Northern Latitude Lake: Yet-To-Be-Served Extension Audiences?, Mark Malchoff, Nate Trachte, Kristine Stepenuck
Journal of Extension
Ice fishing communities appear to be poorly described in Sea Grant Extension programming and planning documents. An intercept survey (N=52) of L. Champlain anglers revealed a broad age range and decades of participation. Opinions about spatial and temporal declines in ice cover were unrelated to state residency or age. Anglers expressing agreement with perceived declines in ice cover reported reductions in avidity and choice of fishing locations, while indicating little impact on species preference or fishing methods. Programming ideas to support this audience include distribution of economic data, ice forecasting, contaminant advisories for subsistence anglers, invasive species, and biodiversity conservation …

Meals For All: An Examination Of The Effects Of Free School Meals On Middle Class Households, Ryan Elizabeth Comerford
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
Universal meal programs were created to mitigate childhood food insecurity in low-income communities. It is well known that poverty and food insecurity go hand-in-hand and are often the basis for much academic research within the realm of childhood food insecurity. This study investigates the impact of universal meal programs on food insecurity from a different perspective, that of the middle class. As an under-researched area, the hope is to draw attention to the needs of communities that are often forgotten and may not qualify for social programs, in an effort to reform existing federal policy regarding Universal Meal programs. Utilizing …

Trust And Its Implications For Trauma, Casidhe C. Daniels
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
Trust presents as a complex and frequently misunderstood building block. While people often demonstrate an inherent belief that trust is naturally engrained in others, adverse life events and traumatic experiences can alter a person’s level of trust. Trust has the ability to change and become redefined. This can occur in a negative manner when trauma is incurred. While the individual’s is often innocent because of the challenges they have experiences, successes, failures, and traumatic events develop an ability to trust others and to what degree they face the lingering implications and diagnoses result.
