The Anchor, Volume 68.13: March 2, 1956, Hope College
The Anchor: 1956
The Anchor began in 1887 and was first issued weekly in 1914. Covering national and campus news alike, Hope College’s student-run newspaper has grown over the years to encompass over two-dozen editors, reporters, and staff. For much of The Anchor's history, the latest issue was distributed across campus each Wednesday throughout the academic school year (with few exceptions). In recent years The Anchor moved to monthly print issues and a more frequently updated website. The Anchor is now published in print twice per academic semester. Occasionally, the volume and/or issue numbering is irregular.

Field Manual Fm 55-8, Transportation Intelligence, October 1956, Robert Bolin , Depositor
Field Manual Fm 55-8, Transportation Intelligence, October 1956, Robert Bolin , Depositor
United States Department of Defense Military Intelligence
This is a manual describing the transportation intelligence activities of the Army in the mid-1950s. A more accurate title would be “Transportation Corps Intelligence” since the Army technical services were responsible for intelligence related to their field of expertise in the 1950s.
The modern US Army vision of the technical intelligence developed during World War II. Shortly before World War II, Army Technical Services had been instructed to set up intelligence sections in the offices of their chiefs. The technical services were bureaus which supplied weapons, equipment, and services to the Army, managed the careers of officers in a particular …
The Non-Legislative Duties Of Senators, Margie Terrell
The Non-Legislative Duties Of Senators, Margie Terrell
Student Scholarship
This paper examines the extensive non-legislative responsibilities of United States Senators, highlighting that while they are primarily elected as lawmakers, a significant portion of their time is consumed by duties as constituent representatives, political actors, and social figures. The author categorizes these duties into three main areas: services for constituents, political and public relations activities, and social functions.
Constituent services represent the most time-consuming aspect of a senator’s office, involving a massive volume of correspondence known as case work. This includes handling requests regarding veterans' claims, immigration issues, government publications, and personal favors. The volume of mail has grown tremendously …
United States Policy Towards The Development Of The Self-Reliance Of Yugoslavia, Heather Armour
United States Policy Towards The Development Of The Self-Reliance Of Yugoslavia, Heather Armour
Student Scholarship
This project, presented in January 1956, examines the evolution and strategic foundations of United States foreign policy toward Yugoslavia following its expulsion from the Soviet Cominform in 1948. The author argues that the Yugoslav-Soviet rift presented a unique opportunity for the West to utilize economic and military aid as a tool to contain Soviet expansionism and demonstrate that a Communist state could survive independent of Kremlin control. The study details the progression of American assistance, beginning with an initial Export-Import Bank loan in 1949 and expanding into a massive emergency relief effort following a devastating drought in 1950. This humanitarian …

The Reservation Of Educational Television Channels With Emphasis On The Work Of The Joint Committee On Educational Television, Carol Luise Ratjen
The Reservation Of Educational Television Channels With Emphasis On The Work Of The Joint Committee On Educational Television, Carol Luise Ratjen
Student Scholarship
This paper examines the critical struggle to reserve television channels for non-commercial educational use in the United States. The author begins by highlighting a significant culture lag in the American educational system, characterized by a massive shortage of teachers and classrooms alongside a high rate of functional illiteracy. As television emerged as a powerful new communications medium following World War II, educators recognized its potential as a powerhouse of educational opportunities rather than just a source of entertainment.
The narrative centers on the formation and impact of the Joint Committee on Educational Television in October 1950. This organization was established …
