Growth And Development Of Street Gangs, Audrey D. Guymon Jan 1997

Growth And Development Of Street Gangs, Audrey D. Guymon

Masters Theses

This field study of the growth and development of street gangs was conducted in the spring of 1996 at a medium security prison utilizing a semi-structured interview with 69 inmates who were known present or former gang members. Since the sample was taken from a population of convicted felons, the results reflect the environment of the participants and may not be representative of gang members as a whole.

The field study determined that the majority of the participants came from two parent homes, had joined the gang between the ages of 9 and 15, lacked positive male role models, and …

Administrative Ramifications Of Student Cheating, Susan A. Stearns Jan 1997

Administrative Ramifications Of Student Cheating, Susan A. Stearns

Journal of the Association for Communication Administration

This article explains the problems associated with ways cheating situations are handled in colleges and universities. Two specific types of knowledge are needed by faculty members: one, what cheating is, and, two, the university's policy. The potential for problems revolves around the University's Academic Misconduct Code: first, many faculty are not aware of their university's code and second, many faculty do not follow the codes. Administrators are also involved in a number of other decisions that could impact student cheating behaviors. Additionally, administrators are typically the university officials implementing the middle and latter steps of the academic misconduct process. Thus, …

The Repeal Of Rent Control In Cambridge, Robert P. Moncreiff Sep 1996

The Repeal Of Rent Control In Cambridge, Robert P. Moncreiff

New England Journal of Public Policy

In the November 8, 1994, state election, Massachusetts voters approved a question placed on the ballot by initiative petition passing a law that effectively outlawed rent control throughout the commonwealth. This law had its most dramatic effect in Cambridge, where a stringent rent control system had been in effect since 1970. The success of the petition was realized primarily through the grassroots efforts of a coalition of small-property owners in Cambridge who felt aggrieved by the city's rent control system. The use of a statewide vote on an initiative petition to enact a law with predominantly local effect created for …

Conference organizers and/or faculty included University of Colorado School of Law professors Betsy Rieke, David H. Getches, Michael A. Gheleta and Charles F. Wilkinson.

All across the country--in Congress, in state legislatures and in urban and rural communities--people are discussing why we should or should not protect biodiversity and how best to do so. Since the Endangered Species Act is up for reauthorization, a variety of reform proposals are being debated. Speakers--including natural resource scholars, experts from the private and nonprofit sectors, and government officials--will examine the rationale for biodiversity protection, the legal framework of the Endangered Species Act, and …

The Effect Of Housing And Food Expenditures On Diet Quality Of Low-Income Households In Salt Lake County, Rebecca Low

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

During a time of national and local debate over welfare reform, research is needed to determine the effectiveness of specific welfare programs and the impact on the lives of households participating in these programs. The objective of this study was to determine the effect housing and food expenditures have on the diet quality of low-income families. Participants for the study were drawn from government-subsidized housing rolls and housing assistance waiting lists. Diet quality was measured by 16 variables: percent RDA protein, fiber, vitamin A, vitamin C, iron, and calcium consumed; percent calories from protein, carbohydrates, fat, and alcohol; and the …
