Spend-Down To Scale Up: Limited-Life Giving In The Climate Crisis, Madeleine C. Mckinnon, Samuel Rogers, David Gunsberg, Emma Mcintosh
The Foundation Review
This article shares first-hand experiences of a charitable foundation operating under a spend-down model, illustrating how a fixed time horizon shapes philanthropic and programmatic behavior. The authors discuss three conditions that a spend-down horizon reliably forces: the imperative to fund quickly, collaboratively, and boldly on shared goals; the discipline to concentrate capital with strategic focus; and the emphasis on learning and collaboration as both a means to optimize for impact now and to sustain and scale impact over the long term.
Authors explore the influence of these conditions in a series of case studies working towards a clean energy transition …

Recovery And Resilience Of Survivors Of Sex Trafficking In Nepal, Bishnu Sapkota, Glenn M. Miles, Chitra B. Buthathoki
Dignity: A Journal of Analysis of Exploitation and Violence
This exploratory qualitative study examines how trafficking survivors in Nepalese rehabilitation centres perceive recovery and experience resilience within Nepal's specific socio-cultural context. This qualitative study employed in-depth interviews with six female sex trafficking survivors in Bagmati Province rehabilitation centres and analysed them through Bronfenbrenner's socio-ecological framework under the themes such as Hindu purity concepts, caste discrimination, joint family dynamics, and non-governmental organization dependency which shape their recovery experiences. The findings of the study reveal recovery as gradual emotional stabilization and future orientation rather than complete healing. Survivors describe stigma in terms of religious purity/pollution binary, with Dalit participants experiencing compounded …

In The Shadow Of The Ballot: Children As Victims Of Zimbabwe's 2008 Election Violence, Baldwin Hove, Chitja Twala, Bekithemba Dube
Dignity: A Journal of Analysis of Exploitation and Violence
The year 2008 witnessed one of the most violent electoral processes in Zimbabwean history. While extensive research has examined the 2008 election violence, limited scholarly attention has been paid to its effects on children. Using the structural violence framework, this study examines how the 2008 electoral violence affected children in Zimbabwe. The study analysed media reports and secondary texts, complemented by retrospective observations, to explore children's experiences during the electoral crisis. It seeks to expose the less examined consequences of political violence on children. The findings reveal that children witnessed assaults, murder, rape, forced displacement, the destruction of homes and …

Dei Impact: A Radically Simplified Approach For Organizations, Tessa L. Dover, Claudia Toma, Fransika Krings
Dei Impact: A Radically Simplified Approach For Organizations, Tessa L. Dover, Claudia Toma, Fransika Krings
Psychology Faculty Publications and Presentations
This chapter introduces a radically simplified approach to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) practice in organizations. DEI Impact is defined as an equitable reduction in disparities between employees from advantaged and disadvantaged groups. We argue that organizations should pursue DEI Impact as the primary—or even sole—goal of their DEI practice. We outline four steps to achieving DEI Impact: (1) Identifying the disparity, (2) Operationalizing DEI Impact, (3) Implementing policies/practices aimed at the disparity, and (4) Measuring impact and adjusting. This iterative design process is flexible to the specific needs of a given organization in a given cultural/political context. Importantly, it …

Festivalization As A Tool For Revitalizing Historic Sites The Case Of Maqa’Ad El-Sultan Qaitbay, Cairo, Egypt, Mona Helmy, Sherin Ashraf
Architectural Engineering
Historic sites are vital components of cities' urbanism, embodying distinctive spatial, architectural, and cultural narratives that shape their character. Their significance extends beyond the built environment, arising from the interplay between tangible elements, such as building forms and spatial organization, and intangible socio-cultural aspects. In many historic sites in Egypt and the Arab world, underuse has led to a decline in social vibrancy, reducing their contribution to the urban fabric. To address this issue, global strategies and tools such as adaptive reuse, placemaking, and festivalization have been employed to revitalize historic public spaces. This research explores the potential of festivalization …
Intersections Of Religion, Race, And Feminism With A Progressive Politic, Amanda D. Hernandez, Tess Starman Phd
Intersections Of Religion, Race, And Feminism With A Progressive Politic, Amanda D. Hernandez, Tess Starman Phd
Sociology: Faculty Publications
Public perceptions of feminism often posit religion as antithetical to the movement, despite many Christian women who identify as feminist. Previous scholarship has studied the ways that race and ethnicity have shaped how individuals conceptualize feminism. This study brings religious affiliation into the equation, specifically among Christian women in the United States. Do women who identify as Christian feminists have more “progressive” stances on social issues than Christian women who do not identify as feminist? Through a quantitative analysis of the 2021 Values and Beliefs of the American Public Survey, this study shows the differential moderating effect of two variables: …

Drawing The Circle: Framing Forensics As Educational Looping, Ben Walker
National Forensic Journal
In light of shrinking numbers on teams and at tournaments, Klosa (2008) called for more sustainable practices in forensics. Now with funding in higher education dwindling (Fenner, 2018), forensics needs to adapt to the changing landscape (Walker & Walker, 2024). This essay outlines how forensic coaches can align our co-curricular activity with a trending educational philosophy: looping.

In 2016 Brianna Kirkham stepped onto the stage to give a performance titled, “if ‘This Is Not A Rape’ isn’t a rape, then what is it?” based on the performance art of Emma Sulkowicz’s “This Is Not A Rape” video. Of over 100 entrants, Brianna Kirkham was named national champion for her performance in the final round. Kirkham instructs the viewer to “watch kindly” when viewing Sulkowicz’s video. However, this phrase is never defined. Instead, Kirkham interrogates herself and the audience. Are we, as participants within a competitive activity, watching kindly? Did she? By utilizing a performance that clearly alludes …

Cultivating Success: Exploring Mentorship In Collegiate Speech And Debate For Student Retention And Growth, Vanessa Fowler

While many are drawn to forensics because of the allure of advocacy through public speaking and moving performances, there also exists the human element of forensics that continues to keep people involved and build life lasting relationships when the competition years are finished. Mentorship plays a distinctive role in the forensics community in the way coaches work to build their teams and for the students to have guides along their journeys whether they continue within the activity after their competitor years or not. This thesis delves into the pivotal role of mentorship within the collegiate speech and debate community, examining …

Autistic people experience higher rates of physical and mental health conditions and face barriers to accessing healthcare. This study evaluated the acceptability and implementation of a co-designed primary care health check for autistic people (18 years+), delivered within a randomised controlled trial in Northern England investigating clinical and costeffectiveness. Following health checks, all autistic people, carers/supporters, and clinicians were invited to complete evaluation questionnaires and a subset invited for an interview. Eighty-one autistic people, 11 carers/supporters, and 18 clinicians returned questionnaires and were descriptively analysed; 44 participants were interviewed. Findings demonstrated that the pre-appointment questionnaire and health check appointment were …

Death By A Thousand Cuts: Thoughts On Protecting Faculty And Staff Morale From Ever-Increasing Administrative Demands, Timothy R. Levine
Death By A Thousand Cuts: Thoughts On Protecting Faculty And Staff Morale From Ever-Increasing Administrative Demands, Timothy R. Levine
Journal of the Association for Communication Administration
Faculty life is more challenging and demanding than ever. Many university administrators give lip service to promoting faculty and staff job satisfaction, retention, morale, and engagement. This essay focuses on one threat to the faculty and staff: the increasing bureaucratic demands from ever more bloated university administrations. A chair-level mitigation strategy is proposed in which chairs selectively shield faculty and staff from some of the burden, while prioritizing and explaining the merits of mission-critical tasks in ways that are transparent and align with scholarly values.

"A View From Mid-Field": Preparing Middle Managers For The Communication Paradoxes Of Change Management, Jennifer A. Sandoval, Robert S. Littlefield
Journal of the Association for Communication Administration
In this study, 20 middle managers are interviewed about the increasing need for flexibility, responsiveness, and change management skills at a large, diverse, and public Southeastern university. The data reveal the middle managers identifying and coping with four paradoxical aspects of their change management role: the cognitive/internal paradoxes of capacity and knowledge and the behavior/external paradoxes of advocacy and process. The results demonstrate how these academic administrators managed the shifting terrain through internal agency (knowledge) and external agency (behavior). These paradoxes reveal the complexity of their role as a multihyphenate in today’s academic landscape as well as an overarching tension …

Charting The Pathways: Exploring Institutional Affiliations Of Past Presidents Among The Various Communication Associations, Aubree A. Herman, Narissra Maria Punyanunt-Carter Phd
Journal of the Association for Communication Administration
This study examines the historical affiliations of past presidents of major U.S. communication associations to identify patterns in disciplinary leadership, organizational representation, and demographic change over time. By tracing the institutions associated with these leaders, the analysis documents both continuity and change in the sources of visible leadership within the field. Findings reveal substantial institutional concentration within individual associations, with a relatively small number of universities accounting for a disproportionate share of presidential terms. The results also demonstrate a pronounced shift in the composition of association leadership. Women represented only a small proportion of presidents before the 1970s but have …

Measuring Financial Responsibility Of Private Higher Education Institutions, Jack Hansen
Measuring Financial Responsibility Of Private Higher Education Institutions, Jack Hansen
Mark A. Israel '91 Endowed Summer Research Fund in Economics
The U.S. Department of Education’s Financial Responsibility Composite Score aggregates three accounting ratios to assess the financial health of private higher education institutions, yet its predetermined weights lack a formal statistical foundation. This paper argues that a data-driven alternative better summarizes institutional financial condition. Using Principal Component Analysis on the Primary Reserve Ratio, Equity Ratio, and Net Income Ratio calculated from 2025 audited statements for 30 private nonprofit bachelor’s institutions in the greater Chicago regional market, we derive empirically-determined weights. The resulting PCA-based score correlates positively with the official FRCS but produces meaningfully different institutional rankings. Relative to our composite …
Service Robots With Low Anthropomorphism In Restaurants: Consumer Reactions And Implications, Ferhat Eren, Volkan Genc
Service Robots With Low Anthropomorphism In Restaurants: Consumer Reactions And Implications, Ferhat Eren, Volkan Genc
Journal of Global Hospitality and Tourism
This study investigates consumer responses to low-anthropomorphic service robots in restaurant front of-house roles using the AIDUA (Artificially Intelligent Device Use Acceptance). Data from 1,268 participants were analysed using PLS-SEM. The results revealed that social impact and anthropomorphism significantly influenced both performance and effort expectancy, while hedonic motivation influenced only performance expectancy. Performance expectancy strongly influenced emotions, which in turn significantly influenced both the willingness to use service robots and objections to their use. However, effort expectancy did not significantly influence emotions. The findings validate the AIDUA model in this context and offer practical insights for robot design and implementation.

Covid-19 Impact On The Swiss Hotel Industry: A Time Series Analysis On 4-Stars Hotels, Yann Queckenstedt, Tianshu Zheng
Journal of Global Hospitality and Tourism
This study investigates the impact of COVID-19 on Swiss 4-star hotel arrivals using time series analysis and forecasts future demand through 2025. Employing a seasonal autoregressive integrated moving average model with intervention analysis, monthly arrival data from January 2005 to December 2022 were analyzed to quantify pandemic-related disruptions. Forecasts from January 2023 to December 2025 suggest a full recovery by March 2023, marking a 36-month rebound period. The pandemic’s economic impact mirrored downturns last seen in the 1970s, underscoring its severity. Findings offer actionable insights for hotel managers and tourism stakeholders, particularly in revenue management and strategic planning. Unlike prior …
