The Anchor: 1966

The Anchor began in 1887 and was first issued weekly in 1914. Covering national and campus news alike, Hope College’s student-run newspaper has grown over the years to encompass over two-dozen editors, reporters, and staff. For much of The Anchor's history, the latest issue was distributed across campus each Wednesday throughout the academic school year (with few exceptions). In recent years The Anchor moved to monthly print issues and a more frequently updated website. The Anchor is now published in print twice per academic semester. Occasionally, the volume and/or issue numbering is irregular.

A Study Of Moral Development In Mormon Culture, Steve Foster Gilliland

Previous studies have indicated that the moral development of the child may follow a "developmental" process. That is, the child progresses through an invariant series of stages, each characterized by certain modes of thought. As the child passes from one stage to another, he integrates the old stage into the new one. Kohlberg proposed a hierarchy of six stages through which the child would progress on his way to moral maturity. His hypothesis has been supported by empirical evidence.

ABSTRACT-The acceptance of the Kantian classification of geography among the sciences as the science of space carries with it certain methodological obligations. Geographers who advocate a macroscopic approach to research are especially bound by Kantian strictures to employ mechanistic models of gravity, equilibrium and potential force fields in their studies. The limitations of such functional models in formulating hypotheses and the underlying assumptions these models make in causal explanations are examined in detail. The purpose of this paper is to attempt an evaluation, in cross-cultural terms, of Leon Festinger's Theory of Cognitive Dissonance, as a research tool. The specific problem to be treated is a consideration of the extent to which dissonance theory can be made applicable in varying situations in diverse cultural settings. Prior to an exposition of methodology, a short abstract of the hypothesis and some of its ramifications is appropriate.

It is the purpose of this thesis to delineate the concept of flexibility as a tool for the analysis of non-literate social systems. Despite the frequent use of the descriptive term "flexible" in discussion of ethnographic case materials, the potential analytic significance of the concept has not been examined systematically. The initial portion of the thesis is concerned with an examination of the term "flexibility" in various contexts of ethnographic usage. In all cases it is found to refer to a system characterized by the feature of optional or alternative possibilities for interpersonal or group relationships. It is hypothesized that …

In his book, The True Believer, Eric Hoffer, with Machiavellian detachment, sets forth a theory on the nature of mass movements. This paper will be primarily concerned with the aspect of Mr. Hoffer' s theory that deals with the setting of the stage for a mass movement--specifically, the temperament, needs, and motives of the men who perform this prerequisite act. The 1952 Presidential campaign ushered into national prominence the Democratic nominee, Adlai Ewing Stevenson.

His sudden and dramatic emergence as an important factor in world politics was due in part to his unique oratory. Dynamic in style and content, his speeches commanded the rapt attention of the American people for three intense months during which he delivered over two hundred and fifty. Of interest and importance is the new insight into national problems that he gave to the American voter as a result of these orations.
