Communication Arts And Sciences In Transition, Douglas M. Trank, Sanuel L. Becker, Barbara Hall Oct 1986

Communication Arts And Sciences In Transition, Douglas M. Trank, Sanuel L. Becker, Barbara Hall

Association for Communication Administration Bulletin

This study presents a comprehensive appraisal of the state of communication arts and sciences departments in U.S. higher education during the mid-1980s. Drawing on survey data from 373 institutions, the research examines departmental organization, faculty demographics, curricular emphases, and budgetary trends. Findings reveal a field in ongoing transition, marked by diverse departmental structures and naming conventions, frequent reorganizations, and the separation of traditional areas such as theatre, mass communication, and speech pathology into independent units. Faculty data indicate modest levels of tenure and continuing gender disparities, though representation of women and minorities is increasing. Salary levels and resource distributions vary …

A Comparison Of Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory Profiles In Native American And White Alcoholics, Barbara Nelle Vesely Aug 1986

A Comparison Of Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory Profiles In Native American And White Alcoholics, Barbara Nelle Vesely

Theses and Dissertations

Although the literature on alcoholism is extensive, virtually all of the existing psychological theories of alcoholism are based on research primarily conducted on White males. The question of generalizability of these research findings to females and to other ethnic groups, such as Native Americans, is one of paramount importance. The present study was designed to investigate differences between the sexes and between the White and Native American groups, by analysis of the MMPI profiles of each group.

In addition to investigation of the group differences, this study addressed another major deficiency of the literature. Many psychological assessments, for example the …

The Relationship Between Religious Beliefs/Attitudes And Psychopathology In An Evangelical Seminary Sample, Eric E. Mueller Jun 1986

The Relationship Between Religious Beliefs/Attitudes And Psychopathology In An Evangelical Seminary Sample, Eric E. Mueller

Doctor of Psychology (PsyD)

This study sought to measure the relationship between religiosity and psychopathology in an evangelical seminary. A sample of 55 randomly selected male Masters of Divinity students was selected from the first through third year classes at a prominent evangelical seminary during the spring quarter of 1984. This study was one facet of a larger research project which addressed adjustment in this seminary population from different perspectives (Neder 1985; Powers 1985). The sample was given a demographic questionnaire, the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI) and three measures of religiosity. These were the Spiritual Well-Being Scale (SWB), the Spiritual Maturity Index (SMI), …

Developing The Personalized System Of Instruction For The Basic Speech Communication Course, William J. Seiler, Marilyn Fuss-Reineck

Department of Communication Studies: Faculty Publications

The purpose of this article is to discuss major planning and development decisions required in order to use the Personalized System of Instruction (PSI) method in the basic speech communication course. In this article we examine: (1) how major PSI components are implemented and (2) how the PSI course is managed. By documenting the decisions required to use PSI in speech communication courses which include performances, we hope to provide helpful guidelines for those interested in applying the PSI method to their basic speech communication courses.

Prehistoric Firewood Exploitation: A Case Study From The Carolinian Biotic Province, David Gordon De Fant Apr 1986

Prehistoric Firewood Exploitation: A Case Study From The Carolinian Biotic Province, David Gordon De Fant

Masters Theses

A case study approach is applied to the problem of prehistoric firewood selection and utilization within a heterogeneous woodland environment. Prefaced by an indepth survey of theoretical and methodological approaches relevant to understanding resource exploitation, a wood charcoal analysis of the Schwerdt site (20AE127) is presented. This analysis is then discussed in regard to environmental, preservational, and functional contexts. It is suggested that this wood charcoal assemblage represents a subtle yet pervasive pattern of firewood selectivity operating within the overt bounds of expedient procurement.

The Correlations Among Ambivalence, One's Concept Of God, And Spiritual Well-Being As Measured On Two Diverse Religious Groups, Gregory G. Lewis Apr 1986

The Correlations Among Ambivalence, One's Concept Of God, And Spiritual Well-Being As Measured On Two Diverse Religious Groups, Gregory G. Lewis

Doctor of Psychology (PsyD)

This study investigated the correlation among measures of concept of God, ambivalence, and spiritual well-being in members of a Baptist General Conference and a Unitarian Universalist Association congregations. Ambivalence is considered to have three manifestations; the simultaneous expression of opposite affect, emotional constriction, and indecision. While this condition is assumed to be present in several crucial developmental stages, and is especially apparent in relation to one's parents, this study argues through psychological and Biblical data that there is also an unrecognized ambivalence in relation to God. Parental ambivalence influences one's relationship with his or her parents and also influences one's …

Pictures And Prose Romantic Sensibility And The Great Plains In Catlin, Kane, And Miller, Ann Davis, Robert Thacker Jan 1986

Pictures And Prose Romantic Sensibility And The Great Plains In Catlin, Kane, And Miller, Ann Davis, Robert Thacker

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

The romantic movement in America, like that in Europe, was characterized by fondness for the exotic and observation of nature. So the Great Plains and the peoples who lived there were favored topics of artists and writers from the mid-1820s through the 1850s. However, at its height the American romantic movement was challenged by a subtle but persistent search for realism. The distinctions between romanticism and realism in belles lettres were not always recognized, since early visual depictions of the plains were seen primarily as ethnographic material, records of an unknown land and the exotic beings who lived there. The …

A Cluster Analytic Study In Intercultural Communication Of Rokeach's Intrumental Values Among Lds Returned Missionaries, Lisa Bradford

Theses and Dissertations

Although much has been done in the study of values several important questions relative to the study of values remain. This thesis discusses the questions of what happens to the value systems of those who leave their culture for extended periods of time, do the perceptions of value systems become more accurate after exposure, and how does religiosity affect value systems.

The study was based on the idea that each of the cultures being tested (Latin and United States) had a distinct, general value system which differentiated it from the other and yet unified the individuals within it. In this …

Female Power, Ethnicity, And Aging, Linda M. C. Abbott Jan 1986

Female Power, Ethnicity, And Aging, Linda M. C. Abbott

Explorations in Ethnic Studies

The standard academic presentation on the topic of power rarely alludes to the elderly, ethnic groups, or to females of any age or race. The cultural history of humankind has been one of gross inequities in the distribution of power, and much of this distributional variance has been attributable to the categories of race, gender, and age. When these categories overlap, the impact on individual access to power has been, and continues to be, the greatest.

[Review Of] Sylvia Junko Yanagisako. Transforming The Past: Tradition And Kinship Among Japanese Americans, Neil Nakadate

Explorations in Sights and Sounds

Transforming the Past is a major contribution to our understanding of Japanese American experience specifically and to our sense of ethnic experience generally. Yanagisako's study transcends its anthropological base to offer crucial insights previously precluded by both facile “understanding" and methological [methodological] limitations.

Communication, Cultural Form And Theology, Paul A. Soukup

Communication

This essay explores some relationships between the areas of communication science and theology, beginning with a brief examination of what is called the 'cultural studies' model of communication and the institutional roles of communication in contemporary society. The second section presents a look at some models of communication interacting with theology in an earlier historical era, while the third reviews some contemporary models of communication within theology. The last section also examines the contemporary period but focusses on more specific projects.

Children And The Environment: Work, Play And Learning In Rural Sudan, Cindi Katz Jan 1986

Children And The Environment: Work, Play And Learning In Rural Sudan, Cindi Katz

Publications and Research

In agricultural economies, environmental learning and the use of environmental knowledge are central practices of social reproduction. The former is important because it encompasses the acquisition of important vocational skills and knowledge, and the latter because it is often integral to the work of providing or procuring basic needs goods and services. In these societies children learn about the environment--that is, about agriculture, animal husbandry and the use of local resources-- largely in the course of their work and play in a variety of settings. In rural areas of the Third World the transition to capitalist relations of production is …

[Review Of] Isobel White, Diane Barwick, And Betty Meehan, Eds. Fighters And Singers: The Lives Of Some Aboriginal Women, Gretchen M. Bataille

Explorations in Sights and Sounds

Fighters and Singers is a collection of fifteen essays written about Aboriginal women of Australia. The authors, mostly anthropologists and all women, wrote of their "sisters," "mothers," and "aunts." The pieces are all informative about tribal life, but they are also warm reminiscences of relationships across cultural boundaries. Among the contributors is Pearl Duncan, the first Aborigine to become a trained teacher in Australia and a former member of the National Aboriginal Education Committee.

Another Style Of Competence: The Caregiving Child, Carolyn P. Edwards Jan 1986

Another Style Of Competence: The Caregiving Child, Carolyn P. Edwards

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

This chapter discusses child and sibling caregiving as an opportunity for the learning of nurturance and responsibility. The argument is based on case examples from ethnographic material, that children in multiage dyads or groupings negotiate constantly with one another and thereby reveal their reasoning about rational and conventional moral rules. The observational material is drawn from the work of Carol R. Ember (1970, 1973) who studied children in a Luo community of about 250 people in the South Nyanza district of Kenya. This community, referred to as Oyugis (actually the name of the market town 2.5 miles away, is one …

Leader Communication And Organizational Culture: A Field Study, Shay Sayre Edd Jan 1986

Leader Communication And Organizational Culture: A Field Study, Shay Sayre Edd

Dissertations

Corporate culture, the object of considerable media attention since 1980, has been identified as an important consideration for improving performance. While the literature points to vision as a key element for building a productive culture, it does not sufficiently address the communication process used by leaders to transmit their vision. This research looks at the leadership and communication aspects of culture, exploring the extent to which the leader's ideology influences the behaviors of organization members. Conducted in a $30 million Southern California company of 225 employees, the study focuses on a female general manager who, in the founder's absence, has …

The Relationship Of Exercise And Diet To Total Cholesterol And High Density Lipoprotein-Cholesterol College Age Males And Females, William F. Rothschild Jan 1986

The Relationship Of Exercise And Diet To Total Cholesterol And High Density Lipoprotein-Cholesterol College Age Males And Females, William F. Rothschild

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Atherosclerosis is a disease of the arteries and is defined as a form of arteriosclerosis in which fatty lesions called atheromatous plaques form on the intima of arteries. The formation of these plaques begins early, within the first two decades of life, and may be started by damage to the endothelial cells and intima of the artery walls (Guyton, 1981). A number of factors may cause the initial damage, including physical abrasion of the endothelium, abnormal substances in the blood or pulsating arterial pressure on the vessel wall (Guyton, 1981).

There is a growing body of epidemiologic, genetic, experimental, and …
