Family Background And Personal Characteristics As Correlates Of Sexual Intercourse Experience Among Adolescent Females, C. Raymond Bingham
Family Background And Personal Characteristics As Correlates Of Sexual Intercourse Experience Among Adolescent Females, C. Raymond Bingham
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
A sub-sample of 814 nonvirgin, adolescent females was drawn from the 1979 U.S. National Survey of Young Women in order to study the correlates of age at first sexual intercourse. This sample was analyzed using a conceptual model developed from past research, as well as some intuitively interesting associations meriting investigation.
Multiple regression procedures were used in analysis of variables by block. In the block analysis several variables were found to predict age at first sexual intercourse. These variables included all the control variables (respondent's age, race, religion, and age at menarche), household income, ideal age for first marriage, ideal …
The Role Of Journalism And Media Studies In The New Era Of Disciplinary Realignments, Willard D. Rowlands Jr.
The Role Of Journalism And Media Studies In The New Era Of Disciplinary Realignments, Willard D. Rowlands Jr.
Association for Communication Administration Bulletin
This article addresses the role of journalism and media studies within the shifting landscape of higher education and disciplinary realignments. It situates contemporary debates about specialization and liberal education within a long historical trajectory, noting that tensions between professional and liberal traditions have existed since classical and medieval times. The discussion critiques views that blame professional fields for undermining liberal education, arguing instead that new specializations have often revitalized intellectual traditions. It emphasizes the interdisciplinary character of journalism and communication, which has historically linked professional practice with philosophical and civic concerns. Examples from Chicago School sociology, Dewey’s pragmatism, and Lippmann’s …
The Co-Opting Of Ethnic Studies In The American University: A Critical View, Jesse M. Vazquez
The Co-Opting Of Ethnic Studies In The American University: A Critical View, Jesse M. Vazquez
Explorations in Ethnic Studies
The birth of ethnic studies in the American university was accompanied by the politics and pedagogy of rage, pride, and mistrust for the then prevailing curricular academic structures and its tradition-bound, academically conservative gatekeepers. The campus take-overs, student demands, and confrontations were a common expression of the times, and concomitantly these were also shapers of the changing times. The presence or absence of ethnic minority faculty and students in our universities was and continues to be one of many indices by which we measure the willingness of this society to live up to its responsibility and promise to guarantee expanding …
[Review Of] William K. Powers. Beyond The Vision: Essays On American Indian Culture, Richard F. Fleck
[Review Of] William K. Powers. Beyond The Vision: Essays On American Indian Culture, Richard F. Fleck
Explorations in Sights and Sounds
Powers' collection of seven essays (mostly about Lakota culture) is of great value to students of Native American Studies. They vary in approach and topic from ethnomusicology to art, religion, and psychology. In his preface Powers pays tribute to Levi-Strauss' structuralist theory and its usefulness to American Indian cultural studies. But Powers qualifies his tribute by suggesting that because structuralism has its limitations, eclecticism is more appropriate for his purposes.
Reservation Policy And The Economic Position Of Wichita Women, Carolyn Garrett Pool
Reservation Policy And The Economic Position Of Wichita Women, Carolyn Garrett Pool
Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)
Early anthropological studies addressed the economic position of women as one component of women's "status"-a construct used to examine a variety of gender-based social distinctions. These distinctions were conceptualized as the opposing domains of "domestic" and "public." The association of women with the domestic domain was viewed as the critical factor in understanding asymmetrical relations of power and authority. Since status has generally been defined in terms of participation in the public, economic, and political sectors dominated by men, anthropologists have proposed alternatives to the strict association of power with public roles. They used the term "influence" to mean the …

Technological Change And Child Behavior Among The !Kung, Patricia Draper, Elizabeth Cashdan
Technological Change And Child Behavior Among The !Kung, Patricia Draper, Elizabeth Cashdan
Department of Anthropology: Faculty Publications
How does change in one part of a social system affect other parts? This is the central question that must be answered in order to understand the process through which culture changes. This paper is about a small piece of the problem. It investigates how changes in subsistence economy affect child behavior and the relations between parents and children among !Kung Bushmen of Western Botswana. We will show that the adoption of a sedentary life style and a new technology of food production is associated with changes in the social interactions between parents and children and between children and their …
Academic Departments: Breaking The Habit Of Isolation, Jon Whitmore
Academic Departments: Breaking The Habit Of Isolation, Jon Whitmore
Association for Communication Administration Bulletin
This article critiques the tendency of academic departments to become isolated and protective of their disciplinary boundaries, limiting opportunities for intellectual growth and collaboration. While departments provide essential structure and identity within higher education, they can also foster parochialism, territorialism, and insularity. The discussion highlights theatre as an inherently interdisciplinary field that naturally connects with literature, music, anthropology, cultural studies, and technology, making it well-suited for cross-departmental partnerships. Examples include collaborations with engineering and architecture on computer-aided design, with visual artists and composers on performance art, and with modern languages and cultural studies scholars as dramaturgs. The article argues that …
Women's Perception Of Fashion Comparing Viewers And Non-Viewers Of Evening Soap Operas : The Cultivation Effect, Elliot Paul Bloom
Women's Perception Of Fashion Comparing Viewers And Non-Viewers Of Evening Soap Operas : The Cultivation Effect, Elliot Paul Bloom
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
The cultivation effect is defined as the distorted view of reality which results from the heavy viewing exposure to a certain type of programming content. The assumption behind the cultivation hypothesis is that the more hours an individual exposes himself or herself to a particular type of program content. the more the individual's view of reality will be consistent with the "reality" shown in the program.
It is no mystery that for the past half-century, millions of Americans have made the broadcast soap opera a daily habit. In response to the heavy interest exhibited by this strong audience, social scientists …
The Heart Of The Prairie: Culture Areas In The Central And Northern Great Plains, James R. Shortridge
The Heart Of The Prairie: Culture Areas In The Central And Northern Great Plains, James R. Shortridge
Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)
Although the words Great Plains imply a physical region, they have been increasingly used to describe a distinctive set of cultural traits and values. The tone was set in 1931 when Walter Prescott Webb argued that attitudes and land uses brought to the Plains from humid lands would fail. Aridity, he said, was the central fact of existence in this place; it demanded a new approach to life. 1

The Future Of Interpersonal Communication, W. Barnett Pearce, Karen A. Foss
The Future Of Interpersonal Communication, W. Barnett Pearce, Karen A. Foss
Association for Communication Administration Bulletin
This article examines the development and future of interpersonal communication as a central area within the communication discipline. It traces the historical debate between rhetorical and speech traditions, the emergence of mass communication research, and the eventual rise of interpersonal communication as a distinct focus. Three major approaches—objective scientific, humanistic celebration, and humane scientific—are outlined, each offering different perspectives on communication processes. The discussion highlights the impact of broader social and political contexts, meta-theoretical debates within the field, and the growing influence of new-paradigm social theory. By situating communication within long-standing Western traditions of actuality, transcendence, and possibility, the article …
Stories, Accounts, And Organizational Power, Stanley Deetz
Stories, Accounts, And Organizational Power, Stanley Deetz
Association for Communication Administration Bulletin
This article examines the role of power in academic organizations, with a focus on how departmental chairs mediate between collegial traditions and corporate administrative structures. Power is framed as both enabling and constraining, manifested not only in direct influence but also in agenda setting, hidden assumptions, and language use. The discussion highlights how storytelling and account-giving shape organizational life, with chairs serving as both accountants of departmental realities and narrators of institutional identity. Stories function to socialize members, naturalize practices, neutralize political interests, and legitimate decisions, thereby influencing whether discussions remain open or become closed. The article concludes that chairs …
Power And Dependency In Close Heterosexual Relationships: A Test Of An Exchange Theory Hypothesis, Gregory L. Sanders
Power And Dependency In Close Heterosexual Relationships: A Test Of An Exchange Theory Hypothesis, Gregory L. Sanders
Masters Theses
Ninety-nine heterosexual couples were surveyed to test the exchange theory hypothesis that interpersonal power and relative dependency are inversely related in dyadic relationships. Controlling for gender, this hypothesis was examined through a path analysis for each of six groups: the overall population, dating couples, engaged couples, cohabiting couples, married couples, and couples treated as a single unit. Results indicate that males are reported as relatively more powerful than females, and this gender effect is found to increase with the permanence of the relationship. Relative dependency has effects on power which also vary according to the type of relationship. Self-reported "subjective …

A Cultural Study Of The Hispanic Population In Kalamazoo, Michigan, Diane M. Rodriguez
Masters Theses
The purpose of this study was to detail the cultural diversity of the Hispanic population in Kalamazoo, Michigan, so as to enhance the efforts of social and government agencies in dealing with the social and economic needs of these people.
While other studies have been conducted on Hispanics, this project was unique in that (a) data were collected while the researcher was in the role of advocate as an employee of the Hispanic-American Council, and (b) emphasis was placed on the cultural components of each Hispanic group in Kalamazoo. The discussion centers on the Mexican-Americans, Cubans, and Panamanians, with briefer …

[Review Of] Wen-Shing Tseng And David Y. H. Wu, Eds. Chinese Culture And Mental Health, Ella P. Lacey
Explorations in Sights and Sounds
Tseng and Wu have performed a creditable task in editing this book that involved twenty-nine delegates from the Conference on Chinese Culture and Mental Health (Hawaii, 1982). Their purpose was to have "insiders" produce a definitive work on the Chinese culture and its interaction with the mental component of health. The Chinese are described in the preface as "having a history of at least 5000 years of civilization," with China comprising "... one quarter of the world's people," but having people of the Chinese culture who live in various geographical areas, including "... Mainland China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Singapore, Australia, …

Explorations in Sights and Sounds
"This jungle filled me with a sense of wonder that has never left me. It has cast a spell over me, and I always return to it ... I have seen all this perish. It started almost imperceptibly." Gertrude Blom, a political activist and refugee from Europe, arrived in Mexico in the 1940s. In 1943 while working as a journalist she joined an expedition sent to observe the Lacandon Maya in the dense rainforests of Chiapas bordering Guatemala. She encountered these people at the pivotal point when they were still self-sufficient and worshipping Mayan gods but beginning to feel the …
The State Of Mass Communication, Ellen Wartella
The State Of Mass Communication, Ellen Wartella
Association for Communication Administration Bulletin
This article evaluates the state of mass communication as an academic field, examining its organizational, educational, and theoretical conditions in the mid-1980s. The discussion situates mass communication within a context of growing public, institutional, and industrial interest in media and communication technologies. Three major areas are identified. Organizationally, the field is experiencing departmental consolidation and debate over nomenclature as traditional speech and journalism programs merge into unified communication units. Educationally, enrollments are expanding rapidly, yet faculty shortages and an industrial hiring model threaten academic rigor. Theoretically, the discipline faces tensions between professional training and liberal arts orientations, as well as …

Israeli, Palestinian And Egyptian Explanations Of Political Actions In The Middle East, Bethamie Horowitz
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
This study investigated how people affiliated with different parties in an international conflict understand their own actions and the actions of their adversaries. Using data gathered in the Middle East in 1982, the study examined the explanations offered by 1336 Israeli Jews, Palestinians (living in Israel) and Egyptians to three political events in the Middle East: 'Israeli Air Force conducts a raid on Beirut,' 'Palestinians attack a bus on the Haifa-Tel Aviv highway,' and 'A peace treaty is announced between Israel and Egypt.'
The study, an exploratory analysis, was carried out in a sequence of stages. First, the analysis involved …
