An Ethnohistorical Study Of The Swan-Canning Fishery In Western Australia, 1697-1837, Paul R. Weaver

The study takes a multidisciplinary approach by examining historical and contemporary scientific literature in order to determine the degree of intercultural competition which took place between Aborigines and Europeans for the native food resources which were associated with the Swan-Canning estuarine system, which is located in the south west of Western Australia, at approximately longitude 116" E. and latitude 32" S. The 1697-1827 time frame of the study, covers all the documented pre-colonial European visits to the fishery environs and also incorporates the first decade of the British colonisation process at the Swan River, which can be said to have …

Burnout And Job Satisfaction: Their Relationship To Perceived Competence And Work Stress Among Undergraduate And Graduate Social Workers, David P. Himle, Srinika Jayaratne Dec 1990

Burnout And Job Satisfaction: Their Relationship To Perceived Competence And Work Stress Among Undergraduate And Graduate Social Workers, David P. Himle, Srinika Jayaratne

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

This study investigated the effects of two types of social work competency on job satisfaction and burnout among undergraduate and graduate social workers. While previous research has suggested that perceived practice competence may increase job satisfaction and reduce burnout, the findings of this study suggest that there is a differential effect between various types of competence on these factors, especially among undergraduate workers. The findings did not support the contention that perceived practice competence was a primary cause of burnout reduction among graduate workers or undergraduate workers, when compared to other occupational stressors.

Reliability And Construct Validity Of An Adjective Rating Scale Of Concept Of God, James D. Fischer

Doctor of Psychology (PsyD)

The reliability and construct validity of Gorsuch's (1968) adjective rating scale of Concept of God (COG) was investigated. Two separate samples of 72 and 197 participants were utilized to complete four statistical analyses: (a) test-retest reliability was computed on a sample of 120 participants; (b) measures of internal consistency were computed providing coefficient alpha's for each scale of the COG; (c) the COG was correlated with the Spiritual Well-Being scale, the Spiritual Maturity Index, the Religious Orientation Scale, and the Spiritual Distress Scale; (d) a confirmatory factor analysis was completed hypothesizing both a one- and four-factor model. An Exploratory Study Of Female Networking In A Mormon Fundamentalist Polygynous Society, Janet Bennion Cannon

Dissertations and Theses

The present study is comprised of two parts: 1) an exploratory ethnography of a contemporary polygynous community governed by a strong patriarchal ideology in Pinesdale Montana with emphasis on social relationships, and 2) an analysis of the factors which have allowed women's groups to develop in Mormon fundamentalism. The ethnographic account of the community contextualizes the occurrence of female groups in Pinesdale. A model of the formation of female groups designed by Nancy Leis (1974) in her study of the West African Ijaw is used to provide a better understanding of how female groups are formed, and is applied to …

An Interpretive Study Of The Professional Socialization Of Neophyte Nurses Into The Nursing Subculture, Elisabeth J. Hamel Edd, Rn

Dissertations

Making the transition from nursing student to practicing nurse requires the novice to master an array of complex nursing skills in order to care for acutely ill patients. In an era of cost containment, today's hospitals are demanding efficient and effective delivery of nursing services. Nurse administrators are expecting competent, efficient graduates nurses upon entry into the organization. The transition from school to the work world is characterized by the loss of one familiar social setting and its replacement by a distinctly new culture. The disparity the neophyte experiences between the attitudes, beliefs, and behaviors of school and work divides …

United States Regional History As An Instructional Field: The Practice Of College And University History Departments, Carl Abbott May 1990

United States Regional History As An Instructional Field: The Practice Of College And University History Departments, Carl Abbott

Urban Studies and Planning Faculty Publications and Presentations

In one sense, American history is "a sequential process of regional development marked by a persistent tension between regional cultures and economic interests and integrative national institutions and values." Since the 1890's, regional history has been an active enterprise supported by academic instruction, leading university presses, specialized journals, and professional organizations. A survey of college and university departments of history yielded data to analyze the present ambiguous position of regional history within the evolving discipline of American historical studies.

The Appeals Of Athletic Shoe Advertisements To Teens, Shari Lynn Tayloe Apr 1990

The Appeals Of Athletic Shoe Advertisements To Teens, Shari Lynn Tayloe

Honors Theses

Studying the structure and the effectiveness of ads can suggest how and why advertisers' commercials appeal to consumers. Narrowing this study down to one medium-television, one product--athletic shoes, and one audience-teenagers, can better identify commercials' appeals and their effectiveness. The study of television athletic shoe advertisements, as viewed by teenagers, provides primary data about both the ads themselves and about their appeals to the 15- to 18-year-old audience.

Use Of Departmental Review As Part Of The Assessment Process, James H. Mcbath Apr 1990

Use Of Departmental Review As Part Of The Assessment Process, James H. Mcbath

Association for Communication Administration Bulletin

This article examines departmental review as a central instrument in outcomes assessment for higher education communication programs. Situating the practice within escalating legislative accreditation and board level accountability, it traces common anxieties that reviews may prompt program closure or reconfiguration. Through case analysis, this article identifies pitfalls arising from unclear objectives, partial data, and uneven participation, and then articulates two guiding principles: evaluation must rest on transparent standards and on evidence grounded in disciplinary knowledge. The discussion links evaluation criteria curriculum adequacy faculty quality resource allocation and graduate performance, with attention to external audiences who often misunderstand communication studies. Concluding …

A Study Of Values And Managerial Practices, Po-Wen Chuang Jan 1990

A Study Of Values And Managerial Practices, Po-Wen Chuang

Theses

The multinational corporations (MNCs) have been a major contributing factor to the rapid growth of the world economy since World War II. In recent years, multinational corporations are said to facilitate transfer of management techniques, thereby accelerating industrial growth, consumption, and a higher standard of living.

Research on multinational corporations has raised many issues, one of the most interesting issues being the transfer of technology within multinational corporations. Technology includes both the so called "hardware" technology such as capital labor ratio, product design and manufacturing methods, and "software" or managerial technology. Differences in managerial technology used by multinational corporations are …
