Parents, Religion And Interpersonal Orientation : An Attachment Theory Perspective, Bradley J. Strahan Aug 1991

Parents, Religion And Interpersonal Orientation : An Attachment Theory Perspective, Bradley J. Strahan

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

It is generally believed that early experiences in childhood influence later psychosocial functioning. This study addresses the relationship between parenting in the early years and later psychosocial functioning and religious orientation within the social context of the Seventh-day Adventist Church. Recent research in the application of paradigms from attachment theory to adult relationships and the psychology of religion forms the theoretical framework for the study. Questionnaire measures were taken from 242 tertiary students at a denominational college. Results indicated that the quality of the parent-child bond was significantly related to later psychosocial adjustment and religious orientation. Further, the quality of …

An Analysis Of Self-Report Delinquency: A Test Using An International Instrument, Linda Robyn

Masters Theses

This is part of an international pilot study on juvenile delinquency in the U. S. and six European countries. Research questions were designed based on using Hirschi’s (1969) theory of Social Control as a guide. Among the questions to be studied are the relationships between delinquency and single- and two-parent homes, participation in organized sports, and acts committed alone or with others. Interviews were conducted with 100 youths from 14- to 18-years of age. The population consisted of past and present students from junior high and high school in a mid-western city. The data were stratified into census tracts and …

“Just How Much Did That Wheelchair Cost?”: Management Of Privacy Boundaries By Persons With Disabilities, Dawn O. Braithwaite Jul 1991

“Just How Much Did That Wheelchair Cost?”: Management Of Privacy Boundaries By Persons With Disabilities, Dawn O. Braithwaite

Department of Communication Studies: Faculty Publications

Persons with physical disabilities were studied to determine how they communicate when they perceive able-bodied persons are expecting or demanding disclosure about their disability in new relationships. An interpretive analysis was performed on 350 pages of transcripted data from interviews with disabled adults. The results showed that disabled persons were able to describe the communication of able-bodied others and their attributions when disclosure was demanded or expected. This study revealed communication strategies disabled persons use to manage disclosure. These strategies were discussed as regulating privacy boundaries, whereby disabled persons seek to be acknowledged as “persons first” by controlling dissemination of …

Advertising, Taste Construction, And The Search For Enlightened Policy: A Critique, Iain Ramsay Jul 1991

Advertising, Taste Construction, And The Search For Enlightened Policy: A Critique, Iain Ramsay

Osgoode Hall Law Journal

This essay is a critique of current legal and public policy discourse concerning the power of advertising to affect consumer tastes and preferences. Two models are critiqued: advertising as information and advertising as preference manipulation. These models are then contrasted with approaches drawn from cultural studies which, drawing on interpretive, rather than empirical, knowledge, suggest an alternative understanding of the role of advertising in a society dominated by "institutions of normalization" rather than by law. As a reflective critique, the essay does not conclude with any blueprint for reform but argues for greater study of the contradictory strands in consumer …

Effects Of Leader-Member Exchange On Subordinates’ Upward Influence Attempts, Kathleen J. Krone Jun 1991

Effects Of Leader-Member Exchange On Subordinates’ Upward Influence Attempts, Kathleen J. Krone

Department of Communication Studies: Faculty Publications

This research examined the extent to which subordinates’ perceptions of supervisory relationship quality affected how frequently they use different types of tactics in their self-reported upward influence attempts. Based on their responses to the Leader-Member Exchange Scale (1982), three hundred and thirty-seven respondents from five different organizations were classified into an in-group or out-group supervisory relationship. As a part of a larger study, a typology of upward influence messages was created based on the extent to which: (l) the means employed to attempt influence are open or closed, and (2) the desired outcomes are openly expressed or left undisclosed. The …

Leadership In Churches Of Christ In Argentina: Expectations Of National Christians For The Use Of Power By Church Leaders, William Alan Richardson

Doctor of Ministry Theses and Dissertations

From the earliest arrival of Spaniards in Argentina, strong authoritarian leaders have provided the predominant model for leadership in all arenas. This project/thesis sets out to discover the effects of this history upon the expectations of Argentine Christians for leaders and leadership styles in the churches of Christ, investigating three key questions: Do Argentine Christians prefer authoritative or participa- tive systems of organization in the church? What system of organization is actually employed in the churches of Christ? Is change required?

In order to answer these questions, the study was initiated with an overview of the history of Argentina and …

Sponsoring The Next Generation: Parental Willingness To Pay For Higher Education, Lala C. Steelman, Brian Powell May 1991

Sponsoring The Next Generation: Parental Willingness To Pay For Higher Education, Lala C. Steelman, Brian Powell

Faculty Publications

Although sociologists and economists have been widely concerned with parental investment in children, that investment has rarely been examined directly. The Parent Survey of the High School and Beyond data set provides material for examining the traits of parents and children that shape parental payment for higher education. Parents' reported willingness and ability to pay, along with savings for children's future education, are shaped first by total income and the number of children who must share that income. Moreover, parental investment in higher education is increased when the parents themselves received parental financial support, which suggests continuity over generations. Gender …

Crime And Development: A Comparative Analysis, Dick Taver'shima Andzenge Apr 1991

Crime And Development: A Comparative Analysis, Dick Taver'shima Andzenge

Dissertations

The study examines the extent to which social and economic development might be related to crime. Modernization theory of crime posits that the process of social and economic development involves changes in the society which are criminogenic. These changes include: urbanization, industrialization, longevity or increased life expectancy, increased manufacturing and gross domestic products. According to this theory these characteristics alter social tendencies to stability and conformity, and therefore result in increased deviance and crime.

This study tests the theory by using longitudinal data collected over a 25-year period from 54 countries. A sample of these data representing 34 countries from …

The Experience And Expression Of Emotion In The Workplace: A Study Of A Corrections Organization, Vincent R. Waldron, Kathleen J. Krone Feb 1991

The Experience And Expression Of Emotion In The Workplace: A Study Of A Corrections Organization, Vincent R. Waldron, Kathleen J. Krone

Department of Communication Studies: Faculty Publications

This study evaluated Rafaeli and Sutton’s (1989) model of emotional expression in the workplace by examining descriptions of emotional interactions occurring among members of a state government agency. The results indicated that qualities of felt emotions influenced emotional expression, which in turn yielded changed relational perceptions and changed communication behavior subsequent to the emotional event. Content analysis of the event descriptions resulted in preliminary generalizations about the types of emotions experienced by members, the nature of repressed emotional messages, and the dimensions of relationship changes stemming from the emotional events. The results are interpreted as evidence of the importance of …

The Garifuna Journey Study Guide, Andrea E. Leland, Kathy Berger Jan 1991

The Garifuna Journey Study Guide, Andrea E. Leland, Kathy Berger

Documentary Study Guides

Garifuna tradition bearers, artists, and technicians collaborated with filmmakers Andrea E. Leland and Kathy Berger to produce The Garifuna Journey, a documentary focused on the story of resistance and continuity of culture. The National Garifuna Council of Belize also worked on the project with the goal of cultural retrieval, as little had been documented and collected for its own archives.

With direction from tradition bearers in Belize, video footage and audio taped oral histories were collected, transcribed, and returned to the Belize community. The documentary was produced from these materials, focused on the Garifuna experience in Belize.

[Review Of] Miriam Makeba And James Hall. Makeba: My Story, Nancy Hellner Jan 1991

[Review Of] Miriam Makeba And James Hall. Makeba: My Story, Nancy Hellner

Explorations in Sights and Sounds

Like much of her music, Miriam Makeba's autobiography is both personal and political. As it details the story of a young girl's coming of age and search for identity, it simultaneously records the history of a country struggling for independence. In the prologue, Makeba compares herself to a South African bird soaring above the horror of apartheid (aparthood) which was instituted in 1947. As she recounts the details of war and injustice in direct, understated, idiom-filled prose, and as she intertwines details of ancient customs with the realities of modern technology, Makeba suggests that music best expresses the tragic subject …

Perceptual Regions Of South Dakota, Steven L. Payton Jan 1991

Perceptual Regions Of South Dakota, Steven L. Payton

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The state of South Dakota has been divided into many different regions. Some of these regions are the result of formal classification by professionals "such as geographers, geologists and pedologists, whereas others reflect the informal opinion of a layman or nonprofessional. Some distinctions exist, perhaps, for convenience, whereas others express a sense of pride and belonging in community or territory. Regardless of the motivation, the resulting perceptual regions are abstractions of space that illustrate how the residents of South Dakota interpret their environment. This paper is a cultural study. The objective of this study is to determine whether South Dakota …

Ethnic Education: A Clash Of Cultures In Progressive Chicago, Gerald R. Gems Jan 1991

Ethnic Education: A Clash Of Cultures In Progressive Chicago, Gerald R. Gems

Explorations in Ethnic Studies

The City of Chicago recently embarked upon a pioneering effort to transform the quality of its public school system. The concept of decentralization that allows for neighborhood councils, greater decision-making at the local level, and increased parental involvement in the schools is not a new one. Similar governance structures of a century ago fell victim to class and ethnic factionalism. The progressive vision of a homogenous society assumed a passive clientele and a consensus culture. Particular educational programs brought diverse groups closer to the mainstream, but the resultant mass culture accommodated pluralistic values rather than the sought-after homogeneity.

[Review Of] Trinh T. Minh-Ha. Woman, Native, Other: Writing Postcoloniality And Feminism, Patricia Grimshaw Jan 1991

[Review Of] Trinh T. Minh-Ha. Woman, Native, Other: Writing Postcoloniality And Feminism, Patricia Grimshaw

Explorations in Sights and Sounds

In Woman, Native, Other, Trinh T. Minh-ha has taken on an ambitious task, which is to explain something of the problems confronting non-Western women writers who publish and are subjected to critiques within the established paradigms of Western scholarly discourses. Must she and her fellows position themselves as "writer of color," "woman writer," or "woman of color," she asks, as she proceeds to display the boundaries others place upon their freedom to create their own realities and establish their distinctive voices. Whereas other women theorists of postcolonialism and feminism have challenged Western-conventions largely within the linguistic and stylistic conventions of …

A Comparative Study Of Public Policy Making Processes Regarding Air Pollution In China, Taiwan, And Japan, Joseph Levno Jan 1991

A Comparative Study Of Public Policy Making Processes Regarding Air Pollution In China, Taiwan, And Japan, Joseph Levno

Whittier Scholars Program

This paper is a comparative study of the public policy processes in Japan, the Peoples Republic of China, and the Republic of China (Taiwan), specifically addressing air pollution policies. What types of air pollution each country faces, and at what levels, will be addressed in the context of public policy formulated to deal with these problems. This is primarily a comparison of how, and why, the policies are formulated as they are. In order to narrow the scope of policy formation, I’ve chosen to look at air pollution, as it is an issue of international concern. First, I will outline …

Introductory Communication Theory: Not Another Skills Course, William C. Donaghy Jan 1991

Introductory Communication Theory: Not Another Skills Course, William C. Donaghy

Basic Communication Course Annual

Speech communication departments in every institution of higher education face unique circumstances when deciding their type and number of introductory courses. Different demands are placed on communication departments operating in community colleges, four year liberal arts colleges, land-grant institutions and major research universities. Some of these situational demands are: how the department is perceived by the administration (i.e., service or major oriented); whether skills courses are accepted as part of the college- or university-wide general education curriculum; whether the college or campus has a communication skills requirement; the college division in which the department is located (i.e., humanities, fine arts …

Instructional Communication Strategies For Adapting To A Multicultural Introductory Course, Charles A. Braithwaite, Dawn O. Braithwaite

Basic Communication Course Annual

No educator is surprised to hear that college enrollment for members of racial and ethnic groups is continuing to rise (The Chronicle of Higher Education, 1990). However, this increase was particularly striking for us after we began teaching in the southwestern United States. We had moved from Minnesota, where the proportion of college students who are minority-group members is only 4%, to New Mexico where the proportion of college students who are minority-group members is 35%, the highest for any state in the continental United States (The Chronicle of Higher Education, 1990). We now look out into multicultural classrooms that …

An Intradisciplinary Perspective, Multiple Methods Of Inquiry And Faculty Development - A Point Of View, John J. Makay, Mary Mohan

Association for Communication Administration Bulletin

This article argues that effective faculty development in communication education requires an intradisciplinary perspective and mastery of multiple methods of inquiry. It critiques the trend toward interdisciplinary identity, urging scholars to center research within communication contexts while employing quantitative and qualitative approaches in concert. A model of intradisciplinary multi method inquiry is presented. The discussion considers technological change, shifting disciplinary boundaries, and the formation of scholarly teams as catalysts for continuous professional growth. By advocating literacy in diverse research traditions and collaborative inquiry, this article outlines a path that strengthens communication scholarship, enhances curricular relevance, and prepares faculty for emerging …

Teacher Evaluations: A Necessary Evil?, Charlotte J. Headrick

Association for Communication Administration Bulletin

This article critiques the pervasive reliance on student evaluations as the primary metric of teaching effectiveness within higher education . Using narrative inquiry and reflective pedagogy it interrogates how statistical performance metrics can oversimplify complex classroom dynamics mask disciplinary differences between general education and theatre majors and distort tenure review and faculty development processes. The discussion connects assessment scholarship with organizational culture studies illustrating how research prestige and grant acquisition displace instructional quality in promotion deliberations . Through qualitative reflection on classroom practice production based learning and institutional policy this article exposes biases embedded in student feedback including workload aversion …
