Busting 5 Myths About Mentoring In Academic Libraries, Mandi Goodsett Jan 2014

Busting 5 Myths About Mentoring In Academic Libraries, Mandi Goodsett

Michael Schwartz Library Publications

One common way that librarians bridge the gap between what they learned in library school and what they are expected to do in tenure-track professional positions is to participate in mentoring programs for new academic librarians. However, the success of these programs is sometimes deterred by several common myths about mentoring programs. Using analysis of the results of a nation-wide survey and six interviews of mentoring program participants, this poster will address five myths about mentoring in academic libraries and specific ways libraries can use the truths behind the myths to create stronger library mentoring programs.

Creating Engaging Information Literacy Tutorials, Mandi Goodsett Jan 2014

Creating Engaging Information Literacy Tutorials, Mandi Goodsett

Michael Schwartz Library Publications

Academic and public librarians are increasingly recognizing the value of online tutorials as a means of providing patrons with the ability to learn information literacy concepts and explore library tools at their own pace and at the point of need. However, a static tutorial video cannot compete with the dynamic, engaging information content that patrons encounter in their everyday lives, and they often fail to produce lasting learning. Studies have shown that providing students with content that requires interaction and participation more successfully keeps their attention and ensures more permanent recall. This presentation will demonstrate several steps librarians can take …

Talking About Open Access: Smash And Subtler Tactics, Jill Cirasella Jan 2014

Talking About Open Access: Smash And Subtler Tactics, Jill Cirasella

Publications and Research

This slideshow covers different ways of answering the question “Why open access?” It reviews the knee-jerk reactions many people have when they hear about open access, describes the many benefits of open access, invokes @openaccesshulk’s strategy of SMASH, and discusses what arguments work best with different populations (students, faculty, administrators, etc.). Finally, it addresses why librarians should try to talk about open access without resorting to constant use of the term “open access” and describes a few ways to sneak open access advocacy into other conversations.

Now That You Have Created A Great Video, How Do You Know If Anyone Is Learning From It?, Claudia J. Dold

Claudia J. Dold

Video offers a wide range of benefits a useful teaching tool, and librarians are using it to make all kinds of information available. I have created two series of videos at my university library concerning library and research skills: one for undergraduates and the other for graduates. This past year, I undertook four studies to determine whether students use the videos and under what circumstances.

Starting From Scratch: Meaningful Integration Of Information Literacy Through Collaborative Course And Assignment Design, Chris Sweet, Meghan Burke

Christopher A. Sweet

Instruction librarians are all too familiar with well-intentioned research papers and assignments that reduce information literacy to a simplistic checklist (must include 4 peer-reviewed sources) or set of skills (use interlibrary loan, cite materials properly). Librarians and classroom faculty should recognize that information literacy cannot just be magically imparted to students through a single assignment or library instruction session. Becoming information literate requires repeated practice in a variety of contexts. How often have you wished for the opportunity to just sit down with a faculty member and start from scratch when designing an assignment –or even better- an entire course? …
