Urban-Designed Programs For The Rural Aged: Are They Exportable?, Roger A. Lohmann, Nancy Lohmann
Urban-Designed Programs For The Rural Aged: Are They Exportable?, Roger A. Lohmann, Nancy Lohmann
Faculty & Staff Scholarship
There are a variety of problems that affect older people in rural areas. In the first part of this paper, we examine four problems affecting the rural aged in particular: health, income, housing and social integration into rural communities. In the second part of the paper, we examine the question of whether programs to deal with these problems that have developed in various cities in the United States can readily be translated into rural communities. The paper concludes with a warning that the urban crisis, largely discovered by human services and other urbanists in the 1960s, is increasingly being expropriated …
The Social Work Contract And Survivorship Services, Roger A. Lohmann, Carl Gaddis
The Social Work Contract And Survivorship Services, Roger A. Lohmann, Carl Gaddis
Faculty & Staff Scholarship
The concept of contracting by social workers is a useful way to describe the normative bounds of client-worker interaction. A growing literature on death and dying in recent years suggests first that long-term care institutions are increasingly the locales for dying in our society and that social workers and other professionals working in such locales have frequently dealt inadequately or not at all with the social and emotional dimensions of death and dying in institutional settings. This article proposes that the social work contract with terminally ill patients be extended to include their survivors.
Social Participation And Social Integration Of The Aged: Implications For Social Welfare, Ellen Fischgrund
Social Participation And Social Integration Of The Aged: Implications For Social Welfare, Ellen Fischgrund
The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
The purpose of this paper is to provide a critical review of the literature regarding the informal social participation patterns of the aged. The factors associated with degree of interaction with friends will be elaborated. For example, the relationship between morale and friendship patterns emerges as a predominant concern in the research literature. An effort will be made to examine the accumulated evidence in terms of implications for practice or further research. Finally, these findings regarding the informal social participation patterns of the aged will be analyzed within the framework of prevailing theoretical notions about social integration.
Public Housing For The Elderly, Cara J. Orben
Public Housing For The Elderly, Cara J. Orben
The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
"In passing the Older Americans Act of 10(5, the Congress took the position that 'in keeping with the inherent dignity of the individual, older people of our Nation are entitled to suitable housing, individually selected, designed and located with reference to special needs and available at costs which older people can afford'" From studies that have been done in different parts of the country, it has been found that most older people prefer independent living arrangements over living with children or in nursing homes. Housing becomes increasingly important as people get older. In a report on housing from the 1971 …

The Black Elderly Volunteer, Sandra E. Gonzales
The Black Elderly Volunteer, Sandra E. Gonzales
Dissertations and Theses
The present study represents an attempt "to seek out one possible subgroup of the black elderly population--the volunteer. Black elderly volunteers are a puzzled about but largely unknown group. Very little systematic research has been done on this subject. Recently there has been an increased interest in volunteering among the elderly population as a whole, as social welfare planners seek new ways for the aged to find fulfillment and enjoyment. It is felt that volunteering can offer prestige, feelings of usefulness and other gratifications that may be lacking in the aged person's life.

Environmental Influences On Decisions Regarding Structure And Function Of Homes For The Aged, Jordan I. Kosberg
Environmental Influences On Decisions Regarding Structure And Function Of Homes For The Aged, Jordan I. Kosberg
The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
Many of the stereotypes of homes for the aged* are carryovers from the past. By and large, these homes had rather limited objectives which revolved around the notion that homes should be custodial institutions. It can be said that these institutions had been extensions of the poor farm, giving shelter (and little more) to the aged who had nowhere else to go. In the past, social norms required grown children to care and provide for their aged parents, and the three-generation family under one roof was common-place. The nature of American society during these years (before urbanization and large-scale industrialization) …

Opinions And Expectations Of Nursing Home Administrators, Jordan I. Kosberg
Opinions And Expectations Of Nursing Home Administrators, Jordan I. Kosberg
The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
From a comparative analysis of 214 nursing homes in the Chicago area, it was found that the nursing home field is composed of institutions with great variations in treatment resources available to the residents (Kosberg and Tobin, 1972). While the determination of organizational correlates to the extent of treatment resources was the major objective of the study, an exploration of the attitudes of a sample of nursing home administrators was undertaken in an effort to learn of possible relationships between attitudes and the characteristics of facilities.
There is a commonly-held assumption that not only the academic background of an administrator …
Horatio Alger: The Persistence Of A Ghetto Social Welfare Institution, Carol Poll, John M. Goering
Horatio Alger: The Persistence Of A Ghetto Social Welfare Institution, Carol Poll, John M. Goering
The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
Despite the riots, radical movements and demands for community controls of the 1960's, social scientists and social workers have noted the perserverance of many non-radical, traditional institutions in ghetto neighborhoods. Some of these institutions, like settlement houses, still advance the ideas of hard work, hoensty, competition, and individual achievement which are at the heart of the American dream. These institutions were often around long before the War on Poverty and appear likely to last long after its end. They, therefore, seem to be a reliable potential source of aid for many ghetto residents. The question at the heart of this …

Evaluating A Pilot Social Service Project For Widows: A Chronicle Of Research Problems, S. Roxanne Hiltz
Evaluating A Pilot Social Service Project For Widows: A Chronicle Of Research Problems, S. Roxanne Hiltz
The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
The decade of the 70's has seen the appearance of a number of publications in the area of "evaluation research", the effort to systematically apply social science research methods to the evaluation of action programs set up for the purpose of helping to solve social problems. Evaluation research is thus one area in which social scientists can be of direct aid in setting public policy about social welfare services.
An excellent primer on the problems that are likely to arise in the course of an evaluation effort and the "conventional wisdom" that has been developed thus far is Carol Weiss' …
Electives And Undergraduate Social Work Education In A State University, H. Wayne Johnson
Electives And Undergraduate Social Work Education In A State University, H. Wayne Johnson
The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
From the beginning of its interest in undergraduate instruction, the Council on Social Work Education has stressed the importance of a broad liberal education for baccalaureate social workers . Such emphasis was restated twice in subsequent CSWE documents, and more recently in other materials which enunciate the standards for the new undergraduate accreditation process commencing in 1974. It is much easier to state the notion of a general education than it is to describe its content and character and there is a tendency to become ambiguous. We are prone to resort to a high level of generalization in characterizing a …
Designing And Evaluating Workshop "Bridges": A Training Project To Upgrade Social Services In Long Term Care Facilities, Corrine C. Williams
Designing And Evaluating Workshop "Bridges": A Training Project To Upgrade Social Services In Long Term Care Facilities, Corrine C. Williams
Dissertations and Theses
Early in the fall of 1973, the Oregon Chapter of the National Association of Social Workers (NASW) decided to sponsor a statewide training project in cooperation with seven chapters in other Department of Health, Education and Welfare (DHEW) regions across the United States. These workshops were to comprise Stage I of a two-stage plan; they were to serve as demonstration projects. Their planning, implementation and evaluation were to be seriously reviewed and studied afterword in an attempt to devise a model, or models, for Stage II, when a great number of such workshops would be held across the nation. The …
An Analysis Of The Mental Health Services Available To The Elderly Within Oregon: Using Multnomah County As A Special Case Study Area, Joan Nadine Hoss
An Analysis Of The Mental Health Services Available To The Elderly Within Oregon: Using Multnomah County As A Special Case Study Area, Joan Nadine Hoss
Dissertations and Theses
The purpose of this study was to identify the mental health services available to the elderly residents of Oregon, and to assess the effectiveness of these services in providing mental health treatment to elderly persons.
In order to reasonably narrow the scope of this study, the investigation of mental health services was limited primarily to those agencies which are publicly funded and controlled by state or local bodies. In addition, Multnomah County was selected as a case study area in order to further narrow the scope of the study. Multnomah County was selected because of the convenience of its geographical …
Some Correlates Of Morale Among Nursing Home Residents, Gail Olmsted Sydnor, Patricia Mears Wold
Some Correlates Of Morale Among Nursing Home Residents, Gail Olmsted Sydnor, Patricia Mears Wold
Dissertations and Theses
This is a study of twenty-six patients aged sixty years and over residing in a nursing care facility in Portland, Oregon in the fall of 1973, which explores the relationship of their morale and selected environmental and social factors.
There are three major aims of the study. The first is to measure variances in morale states as experienced and reported by the respondents. The second aim is to determine how a given set of factors correlate with the self-reported morale of each of the respondents. Selected for consideration are 1) attitudes: expectations upon entering the home and choice, comparison of …
Medicare, Medicaid And The Geriatric Residential Environment, Nancy Lohmann, Roger A. Lohmann
Medicare, Medicaid And The Geriatric Residential Environment, Nancy Lohmann, Roger A. Lohmann
Faculty & Staff Scholarship
This article reports on a study of interstate differences in the availability of nursing home beds, personal care home slots and public housing, and attempts to assess the impact of the adoption of Medicare and Medicaid six years before on the availability of these components of what was termed the "geriatric residential environments continuum" or GRE. The underlying idea is that components of long-term health care, personal care and housing/shelter are three common elements of a wide variety of public policy for the aged.

Model Neighborhoods: A Research Note, Roger A. Lohmann
Faculty & Staff Scholarship
Cities, like people, age. In the United States the aging process for cities has, in many ways, been less than graceful. As a result, there is great concern in this country today with the “decline” of our cities. This note considers the elderly population of south Minneapolis Minnesota and makes recommendations for the adaptation of the Model Cities program to better meet their needs.
Medical-Social Needs In A Sample Population Of Elderly Post-Hospital Patients, Rose N. Cooper
Medical-Social Needs In A Sample Population Of Elderly Post-Hospital Patients, Rose N. Cooper
Dissertations and Theses
The EPP Project was a descriptive and inferential study designed to determine the psychosocial and medical needs of elderly post-hospital dischargees.
The areas of need assessed were (1) living arrangements, (2) use of leisure time, (3) vocational adjustment, (4) financial functioning and (5) adjustment to illness.
The instrument adopted for the purpose of this study was an adaptation of a scheduled in the New York Study. The New York Study, described in The Elderly Ambulatory Patient: Nursing and Psychosocial Needs by Doris Schwartz, Barbara Henley and Leonard Zeitz was a long-range study of the needs of elderly clinic patients.
