The purpose of this study is to find continuity and discontinuity in the use of the apocalyptic vocabulary in Matt 24:27-31 with that of the apocalyptic literature by tracing its possible literary allusions or parallels.

Chapter 1 states the problems concerning Matt 24:27-31, as well as the purpose and limitation of the study; reviews relevant literature; describes methodology and procedures used; and surveys the ancient sources which witness to the apocalyptic traditions which may be assumed to be related to the passage.

Chapter 2 explores the term "Parousia" in order to grasp the meaning of the Matthean Parousia because it …

Buddhist Ethics In Japan And Tibet: A Comparative Study Of The Adoption Of Bodhisattva And Pratimoksa Precepts, Karma Lekshe Tsomo Phd

Theology and Religious Studies: Faculty Scholarship

The religious traditions of Japan and Tibet are complex and unique, yet many interesting parallels may be drawn concerning the introduction of Buddhism and its subsequent development in the two countries. Although two very different cultural environments greeted the arrival of the imported faith, we find striking similarities in their early Buddhist history.

The Concept Of God And Sacred Music Style : An Intercultural Exploration Of Divine Transcendence/Immanence As A Stylistic Determinant For Worship Music With Paradigmatic Implications For The Contemporary Christian Context, Wolfgang Hans Stefani Jan 1993

The Concept Of God And Sacred Music Style : An Intercultural Exploration Of Divine Transcendence/Immanence As A Stylistic Determinant For Worship Music With Paradigmatic Implications For The Contemporary Christian Context, Wolfgang Hans Stefani

Dissertations

Problems. The conscious conservation of religious music style in most cultures contrasts with the stylistic pluralism of Western Christian worship music. This study addressed the problem of decision making within the diversity of music available for Christian worship.

Purpose of the Study. The study's purpose was to explore a core aspect of worldview concerning the nature of ultimate reality--the concept of divine transcendence/immanence--as a transcultural determinant of sacred music style. The focus was the music rather than associated lyrics.

Methodology and Sources. This interdisciplinary study followed a philosophical approach to develop a theoretical paradigm. Documentary research from the …

'Peace: A Gift Of God, A Human Task': Toward A Liberation Theology For Northern Ireland, David Miles Moore Jan 1992

'Peace: A Gift Of God, A Human Task': Toward A Liberation Theology For Northern Ireland, David Miles Moore

Honors Theses

PREFACE: I would have to cite the five months I spent in Cork, Ireland as the biggest motivating factor behind this paper. I knew next to nothing about Northern Ireland before this period. Soon after my arrival in Cork, however, I became fascinated with the socio-religious anomaly to the north of me. Since I became a religion major at Colby, I have always been interested in liberation theology. As I read about the poverty, injustice and violence that pervades Northern Ireland, I was reminded of the context in which Gustavo Gutierrez, Tissa Balasuriya, and Elsa Tamez write and live. The …

Thomas Scott's 'The Force Of Truth': A Diplomatic Edition From The First And Final Editions With Introduction And Notes, Gordon Bruce Rumford

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

Among the many influential preachers and writers of the Evangelical Revival in the Church of England in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth century was Thomas Scott (1747-1821). The most widely read of all his publications was his 1779 Force of Truth which went through 12 editions in his lifetime. This thesis presents a diplomatic edition of that work, based on the 1821 Edinburgh imprint and includes the major textual variants from the first 1779 London edition, with an introduction and annotations.

An Appraisal Of The Leap Of Faith, Gary R. Habermas Jan 1991

An Appraisal Of The Leap Of Faith, Gary R. Habermas

Liberty Baptist Theological Seminary (1973-2015)

Where has the leap of faith concept come from? What has it fostered? Does it provide an adequate foundation for the Christian faith? This article will critique the development of the leap of faith through Lessing, Kant and Kierkegaard. It will then evaluate the theological and philosophical positions that have grown from it and its present status in light of the Scriptures.

Otto Rank's Theory Of Cultural Transition, Thomas James Clearwater Jan 1991

Otto Rank's Theory Of Cultural Transition, Thomas James Clearwater

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

The thesis has two purposes. The first is to provide a biographical and theoretical introduction to Otto Rank. The second is to discuss a specific theme in Rank’s writings, namely his understanding of culture and cultural transition, with specific reference to what he deemed the transition from religion to psychology. The study begins with a short biography. It then proceeds to detail aspects of Rank’s theories that are important for an understanding of his theory of cultural transition. A conclusion offers speculations concerning the relevance of Rank’s theories for modern scholarship. The investigation of culture is a particularly complex and …

The Crucial Disanalogies Between Properly Basic Belief And Belief In God, Richard Grigg Sep 1990

The Crucial Disanalogies Between Properly Basic Belief And Belief In God, Richard Grigg

Philosophy, Theology and Religious Studies Faculty Publications

The antifoundationalist defence of belief in God set forth by Alvin Plantinga has been widely discussed in recent years. Classical foundationalism assumes that there are two kinds of beliefs that we are justified in holding: beliefs supported by evidence, and basic beliefs. Our basic beliefs are those bedrock beliefs that need no evidence to support them and upon which our other beliefs must rest. For the foundationalist, the only beliefs that can be properly basic are either self-evident, or incorrigible, or evident to the senses. Belief in God is none of these. Thus, says the foundationalist, belief in God is …

A Pilgrim's Progress And Preface, Cliff Edwards Jan 1989

A Pilgrim's Progress And Preface, Cliff Edwards

World Studies Publications

Preface and chapter one of Cliff Edward's book, Van Gogh and God.

From the preface: "My purpose in this book is to help us move in the direction that sensitive art critics have pointed out, to enter the territory that theologians have generally ignored: the creative spiritual quest of Vincent van Gogh that he expressed in both word and image. It is my conclusion, after several years of investigation, that an understanding of van Gogh from the perspective of his spiritual search is a key to the unity of the artist's life and work, casting new light on many of …

World-Views And The Epistemic Foundations Of Theism, Joseph Runzo Jan 1989

World-Views And The Epistemic Foundations Of Theism, Joseph Runzo

Religious Studies Faculty Articles and Research

Epistemological issues have inevitably been perennial issues for theism. For any claim to have insight into the nature and acts of the divine requires some sort of substantiation. And the appeal to faith typically made to meet this demand is often unconvincing. This raises a fundamental question: what could constitute proper grounds for theistic belief? In attempting to answer this question, we will need to address the underlying epistemic issue of what justifies commitment to any world–view.

Sumptuary Guidelines In Clement Of Alexandria's Paedagogus And Seneca's Epistulae Morales, Stephen Crump Jan 1989

Sumptuary Guidelines In Clement Of Alexandria's Paedagogus And Seneca's Epistulae Morales, Stephen Crump

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

This thesis, Sumptuary Guidelines in Clement of Alexandria's Paedagogus and Seneca's Epistulae Morales, explores the similarities between the ethical outlooks of Clement of Alexandria and Seneca, as well as peculiar emphases of each writer. The thesis is introduced with a discussion of the Christian search for identity within the Roman world, and the influence of Stoicism in formulating this identity. The next two chapters provide the social and intellectual context within which Clement and Seneca respectively wrote. In establishing Clement's backdrop, the cultural, intellectual, and economic settings of Alexandria are examined. The argument is put forth that these various settings …

The Arguments Of The Apocriticus A Re-Evaluation Of The Apology Of Macarius Magnes, Benedict C. Sheehy Jan 1989

The Arguments Of The Apocriticus A Re-Evaluation Of The Apology Of Macarius Magnes, Benedict C. Sheehy

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

Since its rediscovery in the last century, the Apocriticus of Macarius Magnes has been dismissed as a worthless apology. Scholars generally agreed that the value of the work was not in the Christian apology, but rather in the pagan point of view it preserves. This thesis is an analysis of the arguments from a historico-cultural perspective, particularly from the perspectives of rhetorical argument, allegorical interpretation, and Christian theology. The thesis then attempts to demonstrate that when understood in its proper historical context the apology is a substantial contribution to the Christian apologetic tradition and vehicle to understanding the Christian—pagan conflict …
