Postliberal Approaches To The Theology Of Religions: Presentation, Assessment, And Critical Appropriation, Joel Okamoto May 1997

Postliberal Approaches To The Theology Of Religions: Presentation, Assessment, And Critical Appropriation, Joel Okamoto

Doctor of Theology Dissertation

This study focuses on the third type—the postliberal approaches to the theology of religions. In undertaking this, I have two basic purposes. One is to examine these postliberal approaches. This examination will include a description and analysis of selected postliberal proposals concerning issues and concerns in the theology of religions. The second is to assess these proposals on key issues and appropriate certain insights from the postliberal approach for the purpose of developing a Lutheran theology of religions.

While few proposals in the theology of religions have been characterized as “postliberal," there are considerable differences among them. Therefore I shall …

In The Company Of Hauerwas, Max L. Stackhouse Jan 1997

In The Company Of Hauerwas, Max L. Stackhouse

Journal for Christian Theological Research

This critical response to Stanley Hauerwas' work, especially as found in his recent book, In Good Company, raises questions about the nature and character of Christian Ethics. For instance, it doubts that a tradition so closely linked with Israel as Christianity must be, can so easily dismiss principles of right and wrong (cf. the Torah). Furthermore, one must question whether we should be so confident of the human capacity to cultivate virtues by habituation to overcome evil, or so doubtful of the capacities for humans to carry on commensurable discourse about serious matters between contexts. Still, there are areas …

Apocalypticism And Modern Thinking, Thomas J. J. Altizer Jan 1997

Apocalypticism And Modern Thinking, Thomas J. J. Altizer

Journal for Christian Theological Research

This article seeks to draw forth the deeply apocalyptic ground of a uniquely modern thinking, which it attempts to understand as a rebirth of an original Christian apocalypticism. Such a ground is already manifest in the birth of modern science, and in the advent of a new and dichotomous interiority, one decisively present in Cartestian thinking and in German Idealism, and which in Hegel evolves into a fully apocalyptic systematic thinking. But modern apocalyptic thinking is grounded in a uniquely modern realization of the death of God, which can be understood as a conceptual realization of the crucifixion, as the …

Linking Prayer And Bold Proclamation: An Exegetical Study Of Acts 4:23-31 And Ephesians 6:18-20 With Implications For Contemporary Church Growth, Chris Schofield

Journal of the American Society for Church Growth

Linking prayer and bold proclamation for contemporary church growth is the topic of this insightful study where Christopher Schofield, an adjunct professor and itinerant evangelist, presents an in-depth look at Acts 4:23-31 and Ephesians 6:18-20 expounding on the need to link prayer and bold proclamation together for effective church growth.

The Open-Ended Nature Of Luke And Acts As Inviting Canonical Actualisation, William Kurz Jan 1997

The Open-Ended Nature Of Luke And Acts As Inviting Canonical Actualisation, William Kurz

Theology Faculty Research and Publications

Starting from generally accepted narrative insights, this article attempts to justify a canonical reading of Luke and Acts that actualises the Lukan text for contemporary theology and Christian life. It argues that one set of foundations for later actualisation was laid by the original author: that is, the text itself of Luke and Acts has built into it several invitations for its actualisation in later Christians' lives. Among these built-in occasions for canonical actualisation, this article focuses especially on the 'open-endedness' of Luke and Acts toward the future . It examines three specific openings toward actualisation and application: (1) an …

Paul's Earliest Statement Concerning The Christian Church: A Review And Evaluation Of Research Into Paul's Association Of The Term Ἐκκλησία To Ἐν Χριστῷ In 1 Thessalonians, Roberto Pereyra

Dissertations

The purpose of the dissertation is to develop a deeper understanding of Paul's earliest statement concerning the Christian Church as expressed in the context of 1 Thessalonians. This understanding is gained through a review and evaluation of research into Paul's association of the term ἐκκλησία to the ἐν Χριστῷ motif in the context of 1 Thessalonians.

Chapter 1 reviews literature on the topic and introduces the study. Chapter 2 examines introductory issues of 1 Thessalonians such as authorship, date and place of writing, recipients, general situation, and purpose. Chapter 3 deals with the authenticity of 1 Thess 2:13-16, aliterary question …

The Remnant Motif In The Context Of Judgment And Salvation In The Book Of Jeremiah, Kenneth D. Mulzac Jan 1995

The Remnant Motif In The Context Of Judgment And Salvation In The Book Of Jeremiah, Kenneth D. Mulzac

Dissertations

This dissertation attempts to fill a gap in studies on the remnant motif in the Old Testament by investigating this motif in the book of Jeremiah, a task not fully attempted previously. This study pursues the motif within the main theological framework of judgment and salvation in the book. Five technical terms designating remnant are considered: šכr, plt, mlt, śrd, and ytr.

Chapter 1 canvasses the literature on remnant research from 1903 to the present. It is divided into two sections. The first deals with publications on the remnant motif in materials outside the book of Jeremiah. …
