Luther's Christ, Paul M. Bretscher Apr 1960

Luther's Christ, Paul M. Bretscher

Concordia Theological Monthly

For Luther, Christianity centered in the Lord Jesus Christ. First of all, in Christ as the Son of God. For no one else, he says, can overcome the wrath of God, destroy the power of death and devil, and grant eternal life. Whoever, therefore, sells short anything of this article "will in course of time lose all of Christianity and ultimately become a Turk." One may nor, therefore, tamper with the divine Word.

Prolegomena In Pieper And Aulen- A Comparison, Kurt E. Marquart Jun 1959

Prolegomena In Pieper And Aulen- A Comparison, Kurt E. Marquart

Bachelor of Divinity

Comparing Pieper and Aulen involves (1) an exposition of both positions, and (2) a juxtaposition of the two in a way which will actually exhibit their mutual relations. Whatever is relevant, to the understanding of either position In terms of thesis or antithesis is relevant to the thesis. Since this involves practically limitless source-material, a rigorous selectivity had to be exercised. Naturally this involves the element of judgment on the writer’s part, since he must select what seems particularly relevant and reject what does not. This thesis does not pretend to be anything like an exhaustive treatment. It attempts merely …

An Historical Survey Of Old Testament Theology Since 1922 (Concluded), Delbert R. Hillers Sep 1958

An Historical Survey Of Old Testament Theology Since 1922 (Concluded), Delbert R. Hillers

Concordia Theological Monthly

The sole contribution of the Netherlands to modern Old Testament theology is the Hoofdlijnen der Theologie van het Oude Testament of Th. C. Vriezen, professor of Old Testament at the University of Groningen. Opposing both the "mummifying process" of absolutizing the Old Testament as God's Word and the opposite fault of making it only man's word, Vriezen calls for a "theological Biblical criticism," and wishes in his book to bridge the gap between scientific Old Testament study and its use for practical, religious purposes. As is indicated by the title, Hoofdlijnen, he restricts his discussions to matters of major importance …

An Historical Survey Of Old Testament Theology Since 1922, Delbert R. Hillers Aug 1958

An Historical Survey Of Old Testament Theology Since 1922, Delbert R. Hillers

Concordia Theological Monthly

Since shortly after World War I there have been a great many publications and a lively interest in the field of Old Testament studies known as Old Testament theology or Biblical theology of the Old Testament. This surge of interest came after a period of almost complete neglect of this discipline. This paper will attempt to analyze the causes of the resurgence of Old Testament theology, to understand the various methods or approaches of major scholars in the field, and to analyze the results of these methods.

The Anabaptists And Their Rejection Of Infant Baptism, James T. Heinemeier Jun 1958

The Anabaptists And Their Rejection Of Infant Baptism, James T. Heinemeier

Bachelor of Divinity

Rather than being an exhaustive study of perhaps one of the reasons or the Anabaptists' rejection of infant baptism, this thesis presents a somewhat broader look at the background of the movement, and the social, political, and theologica1 attitudes of the Anabaptists, followed by a more thorough investigation of five of the particularly fundamental objections the Anabaptists raised against infant baptisrn. The writer shall attempt to be as objective as possible in presenting the material contained in the body of the thesis. His subjective evaluation and conclusions are contained in the last chapter.

Lutheran Education And Philosophy, Paul M. Bretscher Apr 1957

Lutheran Education And Philosophy, Paul M. Bretscher

Concordia Theological Monthly

This study conceives of Lutheran education as an activity in which our entire church with all its homes and parishes is engaged. It has in mind all levels, all currently employed agencies, and all subject areas of modern education. To be concrete: our homes, corporate worship, schools and Sunday schools, Bible classes, Bible institutes, catechumen classes, high schools, colleges, seminaries, university, institutions for the physically handicapped. and all our other educational efforts are within the purview of this study. Furthermore, this study proceeds on the premise that Lutheran education is an inevitable outgrowth of the basic beliefs of the Lutheran …

The Doctrine Of Creation In Lutheran Theology, Jaroslav Pelikan Aug 1955

The Doctrine Of Creation In Lutheran Theology, Jaroslav Pelikan

Concordia Theological Monthly

The fundamental category in the Biblical doctrine of man is the category "creature." Whatever else Christian theology may have to say about the nature and destiny of man, it says in the limits described by that category. Its picture of man as sinner, therefore, must portray him as a fallen creature. It must not make him a creature of Satan because of his sin. Nor dare theology forget that it is precisely man's creaturely derivation from God that makes his sin so calamitous. Because the category "creature" is so fundamental, orthodox Christian theology has always felt compelled to draw a …

The Bad Boll Enterprise 1948-1954, Hans Spalteholz Jun 1955

The Bad Boll Enterprise 1948-1954, Hans Spalteholz

Bachelor of Divinity

The thesis, however, does not deal with all the conferences which have been lumped together at times under the title of “Bad Boll.” This thesis limits itself to the free theological conferences which were held in Germany by the Missouri Synod primarily with Lutherans not in fellowship with the Missouri Synod, i.e., the Landeskirchen, the regional churches.

Theological Issues At Evanston, F. E. Mayer Jul 1954

Theological Issues At Evanston, F. E. Mayer

Concordia Theological Monthly

The second assembly of the World Council of Churches will be held at Evanston, Ill., August 15-31, 1954. The 161 member churches will be represented by 600 official delegates, 600 accredited visitors, 150 theological consultants, 120 youth consultants, fraternal delegates, and official observers from nonmember churches. The Christian world is vitally interested in the Evanston assembly, because the chief concern of this gathering will be to agree on the "Christian message" which the member churches of the W. C. C. will proclaim to the world. This message comprises a main theme and six subthemes, which will receive intensive study in …

Natural Law And The New Testament, Robert Hoeferkamp Sep 1952

Natural Law And The New Testament, Robert Hoeferkamp

The Eschatological Tension Of The Kingdom Of God And Interpretations By American Protestant Theology, Vernon Schreiber

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

In our quest for an understanding of the problems raised by an investigation of American theological utterances concerning the Kingdom of God, we have turned first of all, to the New Testament presentation of the Kingdom of God.

Neo-Thomism, Paul M. Bretscher Apr 1950

Neo-Thomism, Paul M. Bretscher

Concordia Theological Monthly

When Pope John XXII canonized Thomas Aquinas ( 1225 to 1274) in 1323, he declared "doctrina eius non potuit esse sine miraculo" and that Thomas had done more to enlighten the Church with his gifts than all other teachers of the Church before his day. In 1279 and 1286 the Dominican Order chose Thomas Aquinas for its Doctor. In 1346 Clement VI enjoined on this Order to adhere strictly to the doctrines of St. Thomas. In 1368 Urban V instructed the university of Toulouse "to follow the teaching of the sainted Thomas as the true doctrine and to make every …

No Development Of Doctrine For Us, Th. Engelder Aug 1949

No Development Of Doctrine For Us, Th. Engelder

Concordia Theological Monthly

The popular theology of today stands for the development of doctrine. C. S. Macfarland declares: "Christian revelation is not confined to a closed canon, to a stereotyped letter, or a strictly defined confession." (Christian Unity in Practice and Prophecy, p. 27.) The Living Church, of Jan. 14, 1933, declares: "There has always been, and under God there always will be, a continual development of experience and doctrine as the Spirit guides the Church into more and more of the truth about Christ. . . Liberal Catholics believe that it is possible to develop a doctrine of Christ in line with …

The Una Sancta In Luther's Theology, F. E. Mayer Nov 1947

The Una Sancta In Luther's Theology, F. E. Mayer

Concordia Theological Monthly

Luther's concept of the Una Sancta was first and last soteriological; not sociological, not statistical, not organizational, not eschatological. Luther's emphasis on soteriology in his definition of the Church can be understood only in the light of his theological principle. Scholastic theology had not satisfied him. Its Aristotelian method had failed to bring assurance of peace to his heart, and its autosoteric principles had been unable to quiet his conscience. The Apostle's message: "The sinner is justified by faith alone," changed Luther's theology both as to method and to content.

The Mystics Of The Late Middle Ages And Their Influence On The Lutheran Reformation, E Edward Hackmann May 1947

The Mystics Of The Late Middle Ages And Their Influence On The Lutheran Reformation, E Edward Hackmann

Bachelor of Divinity

Like all historical movements, the Lutheran Reformation has its antecedents in previous time. It is with one of these preparatory and influencing movements that this paper is to deal, namely, that of Late Medieval Mysticism. In this paper, we shall attempt to present the chief representatives of Late Medieval Mysticism. We have devoted three sections to each representative: first, a brief biographical sketch; secondly, an abbreviated condensation of their mysticism and theological doctrines; and thirdly, a brief evaluation of their sphere of influence and their implications for the Reformation.

The Argument In Support Of The Hades Gospel, Th. Engelder Jun 1945

The Argument In Support Of The Hades Gospel, Th. Engelder

Concordia Theological Monthly

The Hades theologians deny that man's death puts an end to the period of grace and offer a lot of proof for their thesis that God provides opportunities for hearing the Gospel in Hades. Let us examine 21 of these arguments.

The Sola Scriptura And Its Modem Antithesis, John Theodore Mueller Jan 1945

The Sola Scriptura And Its Modem Antithesis, John Theodore Mueller

Concordia Theological Monthly

It is indeed correct to say that the outstanding achievement of Luther's Reformation was the recovery, clarification, and vindication of the sola gratia (sola fide). That truly was a pre-eminent accomplishment, an almost miraculous attainment, as it appears to everyone who considers how thoroughly Rome had succeeded in burying this articulus omnium fundamentalissimus under the rubbish of its extreme work-righteousness program.

Catholic Tributes To Luther, William Dallman Jan 1945

Catholic Tributes To Luther, William Dallman

Concordia Theological Monthly

In the centuries immediately preceding the Reformation the preaching monks regaled their hearers with tales of Troy and silly stories of the saints in order to catch the penny collection, and ''penny preachers" they were called by Brother Berthold of Regensburg in the thirteenth century.

The False Arguments For The Modern Theory Of Open Questions, C. F. Walther, Alex Wm. Guebert Oct 1939

The False Arguments For The Modern Theory Of Open Questions, C. F. Walther, Alex Wm. Guebert

Concordia Theological Monthly

A fourth false argument for the modern theory of open questions is the appeal to certain points of doctrine in which former teachers recognized for their orthodoxy have erred. Those who advance this argument justify it in the following manner: In previous eras certain teachers of our Church entertained divergent opinions without being accused of heresy or denied church-fellowship by their fellow-Christiana.

Biblical Angelology And Resultant Problems, Robert Kamphoefner Sep 1939

Biblical Angelology And Resultant Problems, Robert Kamphoefner

Bachelor of Divinity

The Scriptural doctrine of the angels has caused much discussion in the theological world throughout the centuries. It occupied the minds and the efforts of the early Fathers of the Church and has continued to be a point of dogmatical discussion even today.

The False Arguments For The Modern Theory Of Open Questions, C. F. Walther, W. Arndt Jul 1939

The False Arguments For The Modern Theory Of Open Questions, C. F. Walther, W. Arndt

Concordia Theological Monthly

In the first place, it is not true that our dogmas come into existence gradually and that hence there are articles of faith "which are still in the process of formation, and others which as yet have either not at all or merely by way of beginning been drawn into the stream of events in which dogmas take shape." It is not true that some articles of faith have come down to us "as undecided, unfinished questions, incomplete structures, as open questions," because concerning these things one does not yet find unanimous agreement in the Lutheran Church.

The Principles And Teachings Of The Dialectical Theology, Th. Engelder Mar 1936

The Principles And Teachings Of The Dialectical Theology, Th. Engelder

Concordia Theological Monthly

The principles ruling the dialectical theology are not those of the Reformation. Brunner repudiates the formal principle of Protestantism, the sola Scriptura. He refuses to accept Scripture as the sole authority, the only source and basis of doctrine. The bare words of Scripture cannot establish a doctrine. “In earlier days this discussion [concerning the Virgin Birth] used to be cut short by saying briefly, ‘It is written'; that is, with the aid of the doctrine of verbal inspiration. To-day we can no longer do this, even if we would." (P. 823.) Brunner is consistent. Since he rejects the real inspiration …

The Concept Of Hope In The New Testament, Oswald W. Mieger Apr 1934

The Concept Of Hope In The New Testament, Oswald W. Mieger

Bachelor of Divinity

We have prefixed this beautiful expression of the Christian’s Hope in full because it delineates the one point which we wish to emphasize in this thesis, namely, that the hope which is truly Christian rests solely upon Christ, and in particular upon the merits of His glorious resurrection from the dead, by virtue of which our hope is of inestimable value and worth. It is a fitting forethought for our consideration of the CONCEPT OF HOPE IN THE NEW TESTAMENT.
