Notes On The Inerrancy Of Scripture, Robert Preus Jun 1967

Notes On The Inerrancy Of Scripture, Robert Preus

Concordia Theological Monthly

This study is o1fered as an approach to the problem of the inerrancy of Scripture as it concerns the Lutheran Church today. The attempt is to present a position that agrees with Scripture's testimony concerning itself and with the historic position of the Christian church. At the same time the attempt is made to be timely and to take into account contemporary issues raised by modern Biblical theology.

Documentation: A Lutheran Stance Toward Contemporary Biblical Studies, Ctcr Feb 1967

Documentation: A Lutheran Stance Toward Contemporary Biblical Studies, Ctcr

Concordia Theological Monthly

When the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod instructed the Commission on Theology and Church Relations to "conduct a comprehensive study of Biblical hermeneutics" (1965 Proceedings, Res. 2-07, page 95), it did not thereby declare a moratorium on Biblical study and scholarship throughout the Synod. On the contrary, the church's scholars, wherever their calling finds them, as well as all other members of the church, are expected to continue their daily searching of the Scriptures as vigorously as ever. The special study assigned to the Commission on Theology and Church Relations is simply a part of and, hopefully, a useful contribution to the …

On Change In Theology, Martin H. Franzmann Jan 1967

On Change In Theology, Martin H. Franzmann

Concordia Theological Monthly

This holds with special force for a confessional-conservative church which is, with good reason, appreciative of and jealous for its heritage; and such The Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod is, thank God. The question "have we changed?" is charged with emotion, and at least one component of that emotion is one that must be honored and taken seriously: the clement of holy fear lest that one talent which is death to hide be lodged with us useless.

The New Quest Of The Historical Jesus In Selected Alte Marburger Of Rudolf Bultmann, Bruce Barth May 1966

The New Quest Of The Historical Jesus In Selected Alte Marburger Of Rudolf Bultmann, Bruce Barth

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

The purpose of this study is to investigate the new quest of the historical Jesus as it has been carried out by four pupils of Rudolf Bultmann. These four pupils are: Ernst Kasemann, Gunther Bornkamm, Gerhard Ebeling, and Ernst Fuchs. They are part of a group of former Bultmann pupils who have called themselves the "Alte Marburger," or "old Marburgers," from the fact that they all studied together under Bultmann at the University of Marburg.

The Doctrine Of Baptism As An Ecumenical Factor, Elvin Janetzki May 1966

The Doctrine Of Baptism As An Ecumenical Factor, Elvin Janetzki

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

This ecumenical problem of apparent unity in disunity is the starting point for this study. All aspects of the problem, however, cannot be fully investigated here, so it has been narrowed down to show how a major ecumenical organization, The World Council of Churches, through its Assemblies and Commissions has become increasingly interested in the doctrine of Holy Baptism, to investigate why it has done so, and to trace the attempts it has made to formulate a doctrine of Baptism that it is hoped will resolve the problem of unity in disunity to the satisfaction of all concerned.

The Influence Of Martin Heidegger On The "New Hermeneutic": Heinrich Ott's Use Of Heidegger, James Marquardt Nov 1965

The Influence Of Martin Heidegger On The "New Hermeneutic": Heinrich Ott's Use Of Heidegger, James Marquardt

Bachelor of Divinity

In the past few years theology has experienced a renewal in the area of hermeneutics. This renaissance includes more than a stimulating interest in the principles of interpretation, a periodic revival similar to those that have come and gone in other theological fields. Hermeneutics has broken the boundaries in which it has been confined since the age of orthodoxy and assumed totally new proportions, even to the extent of becoming the focal point of theology for some theologians. To trace some of the philosophical influences behind and in this movement is the proposed task of this paper.

Its Graduates Speak; The Seminary Listens, Ronald L. Johnstone

Concordia Theological Monthly

How well does Concordia Seminary train its students for subsequent service in the church? This is the central question being asked continually by Concordia Seminary of itself; this is also the question of a study just completed by the Concordia Seminary Research Center. The following pages report in part the results of this study of training effectiveness.

Oscar Cullmann's Concept Of Time, John Fuchs Nov 1964

Oscar Cullmann's Concept Of Time, John Fuchs

Master of Divinity Thesis

In the foreword to the second edition of his book Christ and Time, Oscar Cullmann admits that this work is not intended to answer the questions raised by systematic theology. He goes on, to claim that the giving of such answers is not the real task of a New Testament scholar like himself, nor, in his opinion, should it be. In his own words: Is it not the most valuable service that the New Testament scholar can render to the systematic theologian that he permits the questions that are not solved in the New Testament itself to stand as questions? …

The Old Testament In The Pulpit, Herbert T. Mayer Oct 1964

The Old Testament In The Pulpit, Herbert T. Mayer

Concordia Theological Monthly

How much should the pastor preach from the Old Testament? Probably the general answer should be: More than he has been doing. A brief review of sermon study series and sermon books published for pastors of The Lutheran Church -Missouri Synod reveals an average of four or five New Testament studies for each Old Testament text.

Old Testament Theology As Heilsgcschichte, Arlis John Ehlene Oct 1964

Old Testament Theology As Heilsgcschichte, Arlis John Ehlene

Concordia Theological Monthly

An important group of Old Testament scholars in Germany and America is currently making copious use of the term Heilsgeschichte and the ideas associated with it. Avoided until recently by scientific theologians as suggestive of Biblicism and obscurantism, it has staged a comeback as a key word in some of the most respected scholarly circles.

Motivation In Paul's Epistles, M. H. Grumm Apr 1964

Motivation In Paul's Epistles, M. H. Grumm

Concordia Theological Monthly

There is no pastor worthy of the name who does not keep the perennial question of motivation at least simmering at the back of the stove. A problem not only of pastors but of teachers, parents, psychiatrists, salesmen, advertising men, and politicians is this: How do you move people? move them not only to do something but to want to do something? The pastor, of course, is concerned with more than a job by which he earns his bread and butter and with more than a specific job for a specific aim, for this office covers the whole range of …

Fathers, Brethren, And Distant Relatives: The Family Of Theological Discourse, Jaroslav Pelikan Dec 1962

Fathers, Brethren, And Distant Relatives: The Family Of Theological Discourse, Jaroslav Pelikan

Concordia Theological Monthly

For the theologian, one Book is enough, and a thousand books are not too many. This paradox interprets the meaning and prescribes the role of the theological library. For the task of the theologian, of every theologian, is the exposition of the Sacred Scriptures. Yet to perform his task of expounding that one Book the theologian needs a great many books.

A Brief Statement-Guidelines And Helps For Study, Unknown Apr 1962

A Brief Statement-Guidelines And Helps For Study, Unknown

Concordia Theological Monthly

Documents such as A Brief Statement are functional; they are intended to perform a service and have validity and worth because, and insofar as, they do perform a service. As Lutherans, who receive and embrace the Holy Scriptures as the pure fountains from which the people of God must drink to live, we live in the conviction that the one functioning power in the life of the church is the Word of God.

Cosmology, Ontology, And The Travail Of Biblical Language, Langdon B. Gilkey Mar 1962

Cosmology, Ontology, And The Travail Of Biblical Language, Langdon B. Gilkey

Concordia Theological Monthly

This is a paper on the intelligibility of some of the concepts of what we commonly call "biblical theology," or sometimes "the biblical point of view," or "the biblical faith." Although my remarks relate only to the Old Testament and at some points concern only two distinguished American representatives of the "biblical viewpoint," G. E. Wright and B. Anderson, the number of scholars of both testaments whose thoughts are based on the so-called "biblical view," and so who share the difficulties outlined below, is very great indeed.

Requirements For A Confessional Lutheran Dogmatics For Use In Training Filipino Pastors, Robert Mcamis May 1961

Requirements For A Confessional Lutheran Dogmatics For Use In Training Filipino Pastors, Robert Mcamis

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

Our Lutheran Church was late in beginning work in the Philippines. We do not have much time as American missionaries to work in this field. We have a real challenge before us in building an indigenous Lutheran Church in a short time. This paper is concerned with the doctrinal aapect of the indigenous church. · If a strong, evangelical Lutheran Church is to take root and grow in the Philippines, it must be built upon the right foundation. This must be done in the training of students for the ministry who can better translate these theological concepts to their own …
