Behaviorism may be most easily defined after contrasting it with other forms of psychology. Until the advent of behaviorism in 1912, all psychology was built upon a subject matter called consciousness or mind, as definitions of psychology show: James: "Psychology is the description and explanation of states of consciousness as such." The doctrine of the resurrection-, of the body is fundamental to the Christian faith. It is so closely linked to all articles of our religion that if robbed from its setting our whole system of Christian doctrine would become a purposeless aimless jumble of strange notions. This doctrine permeates the whole Christian conception of the divine plan of salvation, supplying it with a purpose. What Dorner says of Israel that “it has the idea of teleology as a kind of a soul” applies to the Christian religion. The final purpose of every act of God is the salvation of mankind. …

The Riggs family lived with and interacted with members of several indigenous groups while setting up and operating the school; the book records the traditions and customs of this with whom the Riggs' interacted.
Contains numerous images and drawings. Drawings were made by Reuben Dorian, a Santee student.
The book was printed by students at the Santee Normal Training School.
