Reason Or Revelation?, Th. Engelder
Reason Or Revelation?, Th. Engelder

There are more rationalists in the churches than go by that name. It is not a nice name. Rationalism is, as we have shown in the preceding articles, an ugly, wicked thing. It sets itself above Scripture, above God. Who would want to proclaim himself a rationalist? Our Liberals indeed are not ashamed of the name. But the great majority of theologians dislikes it. However, many of them, very many of them, are doing the very same thing the rationalists have been doing, and they do it because they like it. They fall into two groups. The first group, made …

Old Testament Temple Worship, Edwin Jording
Old Testament Temple Worship, Edwin Jording
Bachelor of Divinity
Modernist deny the fact that Sacrifices belonged to the essence or the Old Testament Temple worship. They declare the Old Testament sacrifices to have been foreign elements in the Old Testament worship, tolerated by Moses, but criticized by the prophets. One of the prophecies quoted to show that the Lord disapproved of the sacrifices of Israel is Isaiah 1,11. Every unprejudiced reader of the Bible, however, will see that sacrifices constitute the center of the Old Testament worship. For God accepted these sacrifices as an atonement for sins because they pointed to the complete sacrifice of Christ.
The Passive And Active Obedience Of Christ, Bruno Martinelli
The Passive And Active Obedience Of Christ, Bruno Martinelli
Bachelor of Divinity
In describing the manner in which the God-Man Christ Jesus performed the mission for which God sent Him and to which the Son consented in willing obedience, Scripture speaks not only passive obedience of Christ, but just as clearly of His active obedience.

Reason Or Revelation?, Th. Engelder
Reason Or Revelation?, Th. Engelder

Making reason the norm, that is, in reality, the source of religious teaching, is a wicked, evil, noisome thing. We have shown that rationalism is engaged in a wicked, evil business. It is, at the same time, and necessarily so, an evil, noisome, pernicious thing.
The Social Implications In The Gospels And In The Book Of Acts, P. E. Kretzmann
The Social Implications In The Gospels And In The Book Of Acts, P. E. Kretzmann
Concordia Theological Monthly
What are social implications? We might ask first: What is meant by "social"? Obviously the answer is: Anything that Involves two or more people as distinguished from a situation that concerns one person, or individual, alone. To satisfy one probable Inquiry at once, we hasten to say that we want to forestall any suspicion as to any inclination toward a social gospel by stating that the message of the Gospel as we find it in the Holy Scriptures, although commonly proclaimed before social groups, is definitely addressed to the individual, since faith is clearly a matter of the individual, as …

The Great Reconciliation, E. W. Koehler
The Great Reconciliation, E. W. Koehler
Concordia Theological Monthly
The Great Reconciliation is truly the core and center of the entire system of Christian doctrine. All other teachings of the Bible either lead up thereto, or they proceed therefrom. Thus the doctrine of the Law and of sin shows us the need of a reconciliation. The doctrine of grace and of the redemption through Christ shows us how this reconciliation was effected. The doctrine of the means of grace and of faith teaches us how this reconciliation is made known and offered to sinners and how the individual personally apprehends the same. The doctrine of the Church shows that …
The Doctrine Of Offense, Arthur Weber
The Doctrine Of Offense, Arthur Weber
Bachelor of Divinity
The fundamental thought of this thesis revolves around the word skandalon. For that reason it will be necessary to begin with a study of its etymology in the effort to bring out the full connotation of the word as it is used in the Bible. It is apparent from the following etymological study that the word skandalon means "a stumbling block or trap which causes one to fall.”
Qualifications Of A Chrisitan Minister And Teacher And Teaching Procedures As Exemplified In The Life And Teaching Of Jesus, Leonard Thaemert
Qualifications Of A Chrisitan Minister And Teacher And Teaching Procedures As Exemplified In The Life And Teaching Of Jesus, Leonard Thaemert
Bachelor of Divinity
What were the qualifications of Jesus for this important work? We have only a few glances into His rich but brief life here on earth; but all of these are significant, and indicate that He was steadily pursuing a definite purpose and fitting Himself for a specific service. If we consider what He did after the age of thirty, we are led to the conclusion that all His earlier years were spent in study, in meditation in prayer, in direct communion with the Father as preparatory for His three years of service. How significant this is to see in Him …
The Day Of Atonement And Its Evaluation In The Epistle To The Hebrews, Theodore Stolp
The Day Of Atonement And Its Evaluation In The Epistle To The Hebrews, Theodore Stolp
Bachelor of Divinity
Thus the Day of Atonement stands before us in the Scripture as a monument of that wisdom of God which always finds means exactly fitted to supply the needs of men under the conditions and times in which they live, and still more as a monument to that loving kindness of the Lord which is ever stooping to the sinners to rescue their souls from death and to “restore unto them the joy of His salvation.”

The Prophets And Political And Social Problems, Th. Laetsch
The Prophets And Political And Social Problems, Th. Laetsch
Concordia Theological Monthly
The well-known saying, The exiles returned from Babylon to found not a kingdom but a Church, expresses at best only a half-truth, for the commonwealth of Israel was from its very origin a Church, a state-church, a church-state, a theocracy, and this theocracy was not founded by the returning exiles, but was a divine institution, organized by the Lord immediately after the deliverance of Israel out of Egypt. It is rather difficult for us to realize all that the term ''theocracy" implies. The Jewish Church was not a Church within the Jewish state, it was the Jewish state; and the …
Reason Or Revelation?, Th. Engelder
Reason Or Revelation?, Th. Engelder
Concordia Theological Monthly
What? Some more rattling of dry bones? As though we had to be told what an abominable and dangerous thing rationalism is! Just read on. The thing is not so dead as you may think. We are dealing with a live issue. There are many more rationalists in the churches than the census lists. Your own theological thinking may have more of a rationalistic bias than you are aware of. And in our spiritual struggles we are inclined to heed the insidious logic of reason more than the sure Word of Scripture, the certain promise of the Gospel. So the …
