On the whole, it appears that American Lutheranism was oblivious to the writings of Walter Rauschenbusch. An examination of Lehre und Wehre, the theological journal of the Missouri Synod during the years of his ascendancy, failed to uncover a single reference to the "prophet of the Social Gospel." When he was mentioned in Lutheran circles, he was usually stigmatized as the villain of American Protestantism. His name was associated with all the ignominy heaped on the social gospel. He became the favorite "whipping boy" for those denouncing the trend toward Modernism. Perhaps he was not given a fair hearing. At …

Having in 1947 observed the centennial of our dear Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod, we can in 1955 recall that 100 years have elapsed since Lehre und Wehre, our first theological journal, was called into being. As all students of American Lutheran church history know, Lehre und Wehre was not the first paper or journal published by our church. That honor goes to Der Lutheraner, which C. F. W. Walther, supported by several other pastors in Missouri and Illinois and by his congregation, founded in 1844. Naturally the "conclusions” drawn by the writer are subjective to the extent that they are based on his own findings and no one person can pretend to be cognizant of all the data that would be relevant to a study so comprehensive in scope. Secular authority, according to Luther, is in a sense the extension of patriarchal authority to the community. As such it is part of the present order of creation, by which Luther meant the conditions of human activity and existence in history. However, its constitutional form, like all other political settlements within the frame of Moral Law, was for him a matter of human expediency. The purpose of this study is to determine the significance of George Fox's concept of the Church for his doctrinal teachings and for his work as a religious leader in seventeenth century England. Literature in the field o early Quakerism, extensive and varied though it is, has neglected formulation of Fox's views on the basis of such a dominant ideal. Among the noteworthy deaths of last year was that of Edgar Sheffield Brightman, from 1919 to his death Borden Parker Bowne Professor of Philosophy at Boston University, who died at the age of 68 on February 25, 1953. Born in 1884 and educated at Brown, Boston, Berlin, and Marburg Universities, he exerted great influence both on American Protestant theology and on American philosophy.
