Verbal Inspiration- A Stumbling-Block To The Jews And Foolishness To The Greeks, Th. Engelder Mar 1942

Verbal Inspiration- A Stumbling-Block To The Jews And Foolishness To The Greeks, Th. Engelder

Concordia Theological Monthly

The second objection to Verbal Inspiration is based on the so-called unethical portions of the Bible. The mistakes of the Bible are to the moderns a small matter compared with the ethical blemishes they see in the Bible. These alleged immoralities and indecencies scandalize them beyond expression. That is what arouses their most violent protest. The moderns, both conservatives and liberals, join with the unbelievers and infidels in loudly protesting that the Bible as it stands contains much that outrages their moral sensibilities. What the present age needs is an expurgated Bible; and since Verbal Inspiration stands for an unexpurgated …

Volume 12: 1941-42, St. Mary’S Of The Barrens Seminary (Missouri) Jan 1942

Volume 12: 1941-42, St. Mary’S Of The Barrens Seminary (Missouri)

De Andrein

A major achievement of the students of St. Mary’s of the Barrens was the regular publication of their student newspaper. Originally titled, The Andrean, it began as a typewritten, hand illustrated piece that appears to have been circulated among the student body from 1928 to 1930. In November 1930, the format and title changed to The DeAndrein. The printed newspaper included copies of photographs, and was offered for sale to alumni, family, and friends. This informative publication continued uninterrupted until 1965. Many issues of The DeAndrein (newsletter) from June 1940 to December 1963; various programs, goals, directions, etc.; many pamphlets …

Verbal Inspiration- A Stumbling-Block To The Jews And Foolishness To The Greeks, Th. Engelder

Concordia Theological Monthly

"The vast majority of the difficulties and objections arise from erroneous preconceptions and false presuppositions, untenable assumptions and unfounded assertions, strange misconceptions and persistent misrepresentations, by mistakes and misstatements of the questions -with all the fallacious inferences there from. … The prevalence of errors in Scripture is proclaimed ad nauseam in many of our current reviews, both theological and general; in periodicals, both religious and secular; and in many of the recent books bearing on the question." (H. M’Intoah, Is Christ Infallible and the Bible True? Pp. 473, 621.) At the risk of nauseating the reader we shall discuss a …

Modern Humanism, F. E. Mayer May 1941

Modern Humanism, F. E. Mayer

Concordia Theological Monthly

"Humanism,'' in the words of Walter Lippmann, "to replace the conception of man as the subject of a heavenly King takes as its dominant pattern the progress of the individual from helpless infancy to self-governing maturity." Modem Humanism has been labeled as scientific or literary or philosophic humanism and more recently as Religious Humanism. Humanism parades under the name of religion and claims to be "a cult or belief calling itself religious but substituting faith in man for faith in God." C. F. Potter, an exponent of so-called Religious Humanism, defines it as "faith in the supreme value and self-perfectibility …

The Individual And The Kingdom Of God, Frederic A. Chandler Jan 1941

The Individual And The Kingdom Of God, Frederic A. Chandler

Graduate Thesis Collection

The Kingdom of God as depicted by Jesus Christ is the only human society that will effectually eliminate the conflict between the individual and society.

To prove this thesis, the succeeding chapter's will proceed as the nature of the subject dictates. First, as the individual human being is the fixed and unchangeable factor in this problem, the first step will be to give an adequate definition of a person. Next, since his conflict with his fellows reaches the very essence of his being when it touches his moral nature, morality will be defined and it will be shown what that …

A Study In The Psychology Of Religious Sentiment, Wm. Linton Davis Jan 1941

A Study In The Psychology Of Religious Sentiment, Wm. Linton Davis

Graduate Thesis Collection

Religion is a vital subject. This dissertation either makes a contribution to the study of the psychology of religion, or else it is a waste of time trifling with a very vital subject. There are various phases of the psychology of religion such as the origin of religion; the phenomena connected with conversion and religious revivals; with mysticism, spiritism, occultism, ecstasy, and prophetism; with the subconscious, faith-cure, Christian Science, etc.; the interconnection of mind and body; and the growth of the religious consciousness.

Reason Or Revelation?, Th. Engelder Jun 1940

Reason Or Revelation?, Th. Engelder

Concordia Theological Monthly

Making reason the norm, that is, in reality, the source of religious teaching, is a wicked, evil, noisome thing. We have shown that rationalism is engaged in a wicked, evil business. It is, at the same time, and necessarily so, an evil, noisome, pernicious thing.

The Prophets And Political And Social Problems, Theodore Laetsch Apr 1940

The Prophets And Political And Social Problems, Theodore Laetsch

Concordia Theological Monthly

Any one that even casually reads the prophetic books of the Old Testament will see at once that the prophets took a very active interest in the social problems of their day and pointed out a way to their solution. The question is whether what they say on these problems still applies to conditions in the twentieth century, 2,500 and more years later than these prophets lived. A categorical denial of the applicability of Old Testament prophecy to our present-day conditions would come into conflict with such clear Scripture-passages as Rom.15: 4 and 2 Tim. 3: 16. On the other …

The Church And Social Problems, W. Arndt Feb 1940

The Church And Social Problems, W. Arndt

Concordia Theological Monthly

These brief remarks are intended to introduce a series of articles dealing with the topic mentioned in the caption, articles which, God willing, will appear in this journal during 1940. While we should feel extremely sorry if our Church and its ministers, instead of studying and preaching the Word of God, should devote themselves to the debating of sociological questions, we cannot ignore the situation which confronts us, realizing that on every side these matters are made the subject of religious discussion and that our Christians are vitally affected by them. Our church members are looking to the clergy for …

The Means Of Grace, F. E. Mayer Feb 1939

The Means Of Grace, F. E. Mayer

Concordia Theological Monthly

How does the infinite God reveal Himself to finite man? How can union and communion between God and man be established? There is an inherent longing in man to bridge the chasm which separates the unknown, absolute God from sinful, mortal man, and since Adam's fall natural man has attempted to penetrate into the being, counsels, attitude, and mysteries of God.
