Liberal Theology And The Reformed Churches., F. E. Mayer Dec 1944

Liberal Theology And The Reformed Churches., F. E. Mayer

Concordia Theological Monthly

The characteristic elements of the thought world during the put 75 years may be reduced to two outstanding and significant movements: science and democracy. Man placed an almost absolute faith in the omnicompetence of science. Science became a cult. The empirical method of science was considered the only means by which truth could be discovered and judged. The "scientific" method attempted to displace revelation; it branded the Scriptural theology as metaphysics and relegated it to the museums; it tended to eliminate the idea of God from human thought and to make man self-sufficient; its astronomical and biological theories questioned the …

Catholic Action, Paul A. Zimmerman May 1944

Catholic Action, Paul A. Zimmerman

Bachelor of Divinity

According to well established policy the Catholic Church considers it its right and responsibility to rule in temporal affairs as well as in spiritual. Therefore, the Papacy today is striving through Catholic Action to condition the social and moral thinking of society so that the leadership of the Catholic Church may eventually be accepted in every field of human activity. The tremendous implications of this program demand thorough study. In our discussion of Catholic Action we shall first trace the development of Catholic Action from its beginning to the present day. We shall then consider its theological bases. Finally, we …

Religion In The Negro Spiritual, Hubert R. Hasskamp May 1944

Religion In The Negro Spiritual, Hubert R. Hasskamp

Bachelor of Divinity

Much work, especially in recent years, has been done on the music of the Spiritual; but, though others .have generalized in discussing the text of the Spirituals, we propose to go one step farther and point out the doctrines contained in the text of the Spirituals. We believe this has never been done before and for that reason our work has proved all the more interesting. However, in studying the Spirituals, we found that we could not limit ourselves to the text only, for we find that the religion of the Negro is also portrayed by the type of music …

The Seminary And The Church, W. Arndt Aug 1943

The Seminary And The Church, W. Arndt

Concordia Theological Monthly

In beginning the consideration of the theme before our meeting this morning it is well for us to bear in mind that the seminary is not so necessary for the existence of the Church as we teachers at the various Lutheran seminaries are perhaps wont, or at least inclined, to assume. It may be conducive to humility on our part if we reflect that the Church existed and flourished once upon a time without such schools, and if that thought pricks some bubbles of self-importance which we may have fondly permitted to float about our heads, I would say we …

The Federal Council Of The Churches Of Christ In America With Especial Reference To Social Gospel And Unionism, Herbert Hinz May 1943

The Federal Council Of The Churches Of Christ In America With Especial Reference To Social Gospel And Unionism, Herbert Hinz

Bachelor of Divinity

The Federal Council of the Churches of Christ in America during the past thirty-odd years has gained an extraordinarily large influence in the affairs of the American Protestant church, and American life and government It has been thought well, because of the extensive power of the Federal Council, to investigate the Council, with reference to its background, religion and work, with special treatment of those factors which make control by the Federal Council in religious, civil and political life intolerable. It is to a study of' such features that this paper is dedicated.

The Social Ethic Of Martin Luther, Carl Walter Berner Mar 1943

The Social Ethic Of Martin Luther, Carl Walter Berner

Concordia Theological Monthly

In the present effort to trace the fierce currents of Europe's political ground swells to their source, many writers wish to discover the first rising of the tide in the thought channels of Martin Luther's ideas on religion, politics, and social problems, away back in the sixteenth century. Able thinkers, like McGovern, who have sent their searching gaze into the dim years of history in the hope of discovering the precursors, either men or ideologies, of the present world-wide eruption, have held to a theory of history in which men like Luther are given a lion's share in the responsibility …

Toward A Lutheran Philosophy Of Education, Paul Bretscher Jan 1943

Toward A Lutheran Philosophy Of Education, Paul Bretscher

Concordia Theological Monthly

This is not the first attempt in our circles to approach the subject of "a Lutheran philosophy of education." Every committee of Synod which was charged with the task to examine and, by helpful suggestions, to improve our program of higher education has, with varying degrees of comprehensiveness, articulated our philosophy of education. Especially is this true of the work done by Synod's recent "Curriculum Committees," which laid down guiding objectives of education in their reports on our junior colleges, theological seminaries, and teachers colleges, and called attention to the peculiar place of our system of higher education in the …
