Religious And Secular Correlates Of The Lds Family Home Evening Program, Gordon E. Mauss

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to describe and explore three phenomenon of the L.D.S. Family Home Evening Program: (1) the nature of religious commitment in an L.D.S. sample, (2) the degree of participation, (3) the relation of certain religious and secular variables.
The data for the study were made available to the researcher by A. L. Mauss, as part of a larger study designed to measure the impact of Urbanism upon Mormonism. The instrument, modeled after the Glock and Stark studies, was adapted to a random sample of 958 members of the L.D.S. Church in Utah.

The Gospel And The Ecumenical Movement, Robert P. Scharlemann Jun 1969

The Gospel And The Ecumenical Movement, Robert P. Scharlemann

Concordia Theological Monthly

The first conference on "Life and Work," held in Stockholm in 1925, appealed to Christians to repent the divisions among them and to make the gospel the decisive power in all areas of life. This conference - the "Nicea of ethics," as it came to be called-was not summoned to discuss the theological or dogmatic questions which divide the churches; it was called to address the churches' task of working together in the public life. The invitation declared the world situation to be so serious that Christians could not afford to await the reunion of churches before setting "hearts and …

The Gospel And Political Structures, Jobst Schoene Jun 1969

The Gospel And Political Structures, Jobst Schoene

Concordia Theological Monthly

The situation which suggests this theme is unique in more than one respect. Hardly ever in the history of theology has there been such intensive and impassioned questioning and contention concerning the relations between the gospel and political structures as today. That this is true also of the discussion within the Lutheran churches becomes evident the moment one investigates the problems posed by the concepts "gospel'' and "political structures." The rapid change of the political structures all over the world renders the answers from the Lutheran tradition, which have only too often been identified with the statements of Scripture and …

The Gospel In The Medieval Church, Carl A. Volz Jun 1969

The Gospel In The Medieval Church, Carl A. Volz

Concordia Theological Monthly

A curious phenomenon of Protestant and Lutheran historiography since the 17th century has been a studied neglect of the millennium labeled by Renaissance scholars as the "Middle Ages." One reason for this indifference lies in the popular notion that the Reformation was preceded by a thousand years of sub-Christian superstition during which the strong Pauline accent of justification by grace through faith on account of Christ was almost totally ignored. By coloring these centuries dark, the reformers tend to stand in bolder relief as heroic men of God who appeared to correct long-standing abuses in the church. The more sharply …

Freedom In Christ-Gift And Demand, Edgar Krentz Jun 1969

Freedom In Christ-Gift And Demand, Edgar Krentz

Concordia Theological Monthly

"Freedom," a word we often hear and a concept we highly prize, is surprisingly rare in the New Testament. A rapid survey of the words eleutheria, eleutheria, and eleutheros in a concordance will show that in any sense other than the sociological (free man as opposed to slave) the term is practically confined to Paul. He is the only one to use freedom consistently in a religious sense.

The New Testament Concept Of Shame, Richard Paul Bode Jun 1969

The New Testament Concept Of Shame, Richard Paul Bode

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

Is the society which gave birth to the New Testament a guilt society or a shame society? Is the function of shame in the New Testament psychological or sociological? To what degree does the sanction of shame determine the behavior and life of the followers of Christ? These are some of the initial questions which aroused interest in carrying out the present study. The function of shame in the early Christian community and its usage in the New Testament does not conform precisely to either the Eastern or the Western view of shame: nor does it merely occupy a mediating …

Division And Reunion In The Presbyterian Church In Korea 1959-1968, Bong Rin Ro May 1969

Division And Reunion In The Presbyterian Church In Korea 1959-1968, Bong Rin Ro

Doctor of Theology Dissertation

This study is basically a historical investigation based on sources from both Korea and America. Since the controversial matter in the thesis can be problematical, the writer attempted to select source materials which give a fair representation of both opposing factions. Most of the primary sources in Korean were brought either directly from Korea or made available from Presbyterian missionaries in America who worked in Korea. A brother of the writer, a Presbyterian minister and a seminary student were also instrumental in Korea collecting necessary materials such as the minutes of the General Assembly meetings, official statements of various church …

The Congregation Of Christ-A Charismatic Body, Walter J. Bartling Feb 1969

The Congregation Of Christ-A Charismatic Body, Walter J. Bartling

Concordia Theological Monthly

My original assignment was a little vague. I knew I was to deal with the New Testament materials which treat in general with the subject of charismatic gifts. There would be other specialized presentations on specific gifts. It was not until I received a promotional brochure that I was given a formulated subject: “The Lordship of Jesus and Charisma for His Body." This formulation of the subject and the slogan for the conference, "Jesus is Lord," suddenly made it quite clear to me how I should approach my topic. There is really only one passage in the New Testament in …

Into the middle of the "Denver debate" - the sometimes bitter, sometimes restrained, but always intense expressions of opinion - came a group of black Lutherans bringing their gift of love. Delegates, visitors, and members of the Black Youth Unlimited stood together on the platform in the convention hall.

The Reverend Albert Pero of Detroit, President of the Association of Black Lutheran Churchmen, Mr. Sherman Beverly, high school teacher and president of the Chicago Northwest Suburban chapter of LHRAA, and the Reverend Will Herzfeld of Oakland, California and former LHRAA board member, spoke for the group.

James Forman, director of the National Black Economic Development Conference, interrupted the service at Riverside Church, New York, on Sunday, May 3, when he stood in the chancel and read a list of demands made by his organization against the church. Riverside Church, located at Riverside Drive and 120th Street, just west of Harlem, has been singled out, Forman said, "because it is in the heart of the Harlem community, as are a few other racist institutions."

"Nothing could be more misleading to our children than our present affluent society. They will inherit a totally different world, a world in which the standards, politics, and economics of the 1960's are dead." So says Dr. Paul Ehrlich in a recently published paperback. THE POPULATION BOMB. He is a specialist in population biology and labeled by some as an obnoxious alarmist.

"I feel very uneasy about the reading of the names of all the U.S. fatalities in Vietnam," observed Hazaiah Williams, black clergyman from Oakland. Rev. Williams was addressing a "moratorium" assembly in Valparaiso University's Chapel. He made the remark as the subdued voices of students continued the 24 hour-long recitations of names of the war dead.

The Lutheran Church - Missouri Synod is endeavoring to take its verbal commitment to the concern of housing needs seriously. February 16 marks the day of a church-wide effort to gather a million dollar offering in a program called "Keys for Christ."

It all started in New York in 1967 when delegates of the church assembled in convention wanted to give substance to resolutions of earlier conventions that spoke more generally in this matter.
