The Genealogies Of Jesus Christ In Matthew And Luke, Theodore Schubkegel May 1946

The Genealogies Of Jesus Christ In Matthew And Luke, Theodore Schubkegel

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

For centuries scholars have recognized that the genealogies of Christ in Matthew and Luke, present problems. Each genealogy has its own problems. But the biggest problem is to harmonize the two genealogies.

The Problem Of Vanity In Ecclesiastes, George Thomas May 1946

The Problem Of Vanity In Ecclesiastes, George Thomas

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

In this weary and distracted world, burdened down with sin and sorrow, we naturally asks “Is there anything worth seeking, worth having? anything that will still the cravings of the restless spirit within us, and bring peace and satisfaction to the troubled heart? What should be the chief object of man's desire and pursuit? To what end should life be devoted? Where does man finally go, i.e., what happens to him at death? Are all things really vanity?"

That is the problem which Solomon undertook to solve in Ecclesiastes - he resolves all the foregoing questions under the category of …

The Greatest Missionary Problem, H. Nau Apr 1946

The Greatest Missionary Problem, H. Nau

Concordia Theological Monthly

The greatest missionary problem facing the Christian Church of the future is the world of Islam, the Moslem world. While the pagan world is comparatively well stocked with Christian missions and missionaries - comparatively well, we say, because we know only too well that in some parts of the pagan world the missionary occupation is but a skeleton one - the world of Islam has been touched only on its outskirts, its fringes.

The Doctrine Of The Church According To The Ephesians With A Preliminary Disscussion On The Word Ekklesia, Fred T. Eggert Mar 1946

The Doctrine Of The Church According To The Ephesians With A Preliminary Disscussion On The Word Ekklesia, Fred T. Eggert

Bachelor of Divinity

All the doctrines of the Church should have a solid foundation, a sedes doctrine, in the Scripture. This is particularly true of the doctrine of the Church. The Epistle to the Ephesians is, without doubt, the best characterization of the Church in all the Scripture. Evidently it was Paul's special purpose to give the whole church a clear picture of itself in this letter.

Was Luther Needed?, William Dallmann Mar 1946

Was Luther Needed?, William Dallmann

Concordia Theological Monthly

Where all the world, the great in Church and State, had failed for centuries, Luther succeeded almost instantly. How? Mr. Newman says: "He adopted a doctrine original, specious, fascinating, persuasive, powerful against Rome, and wonderfully adapted, as if prophetically, to the genius of the times which were to follow. He found Christians in bondage to their works and observances; he released them by his doctrine of faith." - Lect. Justif., p. 386. He became a cardinal.

The Limitations Of Christian Preaching, J. H. Fritz Feb 1946

The Limitations Of Christian Preaching, J. H. Fritz

Concordia Theological Monthly

The objective which one seeks to accomplish and his means for that purpose determine the limitations of his doing. The practice of medicine is limited to a correct diagnosis of the case under consideration and the drugs or other remedial agents that will, if possible, effect a cure. A physician may relate some interesting news events to his patient, speak of his own experience in the recent war, and crack a few good jokes that will produce a hearty laugh, but that will not cure the patient of his tuberculosis or pneumonia or tonsilitis. For the production of a good …

How Dr. Martin Luther Died, Theo. Hoyer Feb 1946

How Dr. Martin Luther Died, Theo. Hoyer

Concordia Theological Monthly

Since 1883 Lutherans, and generally all Protestants, have observed the 400th anniversary of the chief events in the life of the great Reformer: Luther's birth; the posting of the Ninety-five Theses; the Diet of Worms; the publication of Luther's two Catechisms; the Diet of Augsburg; the preparation of the Smalcald Articles. This year we reach the end; the 18th of February marks the 400th return of the day of Luther's death. Judging by past experience, notice of this anniversary will be taken in most church periodicals. Not all of it will be friendly; old legends will be warmed up, old …

The Developments Of Home Missions In North America, F. C. Streufert Feb 1946

The Developments Of Home Missions In North America, F. C. Streufert

Concordia Theological Monthly

As we look back upon the century of Synod's history that will soon be completed and think of the developments both in the history of our country and of our Church, we stand in wonderment. We marvel at the tremendous changes in every phase of activity, be it in the social, in the economic, in the political, or in the scientific field. It was a century that saw at its beginning the westward trek of the pioneer by oxcart and by covered wagon and at the close the use of the streamlined train, the auto, the airplane, the radio, and …

Dispensationalism Examined And Found Wanting, F. E. Mayer Feb 1946

Dispensationalism Examined And Found Wanting, F. E. Mayer

Concordia Theological Monthly

Premillennialism is currently very popular with the Fundamentalists. The doctrinal statements of all Fundamentalist associations profess belief in the premillennial coming of Christ and of His visible rule on earth during the millennium. Likewise, the Holiness and Pentecostal bodies teach the premillennial coming of Christ. "Christ, the coming king," is one of the four main points of the Foursquare Gospel.
