Carbon Sequestration Technology: Challenges And Urgent Critical Scientific Issues, Li Xiaochun, Liu Tianyu, Zhang Liwei, Zhou Hong, Liu Guizhen, Wang Yan, Gan Manguang, Li Qi

Coal Geology & Exploration

Objective Carbon sequestration technology represents a core approach to achieving carbon neutrality. However, its large-scale application remains constrained by multiple technical and scientific challenges. Methods Based on an analysis of existing carbon sequestration projects, this study identified four major challenges in carbon sequestration: (1) high uncertainty in the assessment of CO2 sequestration capacity; (2) low injectivity of low-permeability discontinuous reservoirs; (3) a limited understanding of long-term mechanical stability; and (4) significant difficulty in assessing the risks of CO2 leakage. Results To address these challenges, this study proposes the common issues currently faced by carbon sequestration technology, and, accordingly, …

Designation And Classification Of Co2 Storage Technologies, Ma Fubo, Yang Xuechao, Zhou Zhengwu, Liu Hongliang, Chang Jia, Yi Jiayao, Wang Yan

Coal Geology & Exploration

Objective and Method Currently, there remains a lack of criteria for technical certification, designation, and classification of carbon dioxide (CO2) storage technologies due to their cross-disciplinary nature and ambiguous scopes. To address this issue, this study proposes technical certification criteria and designation principles, as well as analyzes four types of common CO2 storage technologies: geologic storage, underground space storage, ocean water storage, and utilization and storage. Accordingly, a classification philosophy and scheme for these technologies is determined. Results and Conclusions In terms for technical certification criteria, a CO2 storage technology has to meet four criteria: (1) …

Coal Geology & Exploration

Objective and Methods Driven by the goal of carbon neutrality, geologic CO2 storage has become a critical national priority in China. Compared to conventional reservoirs in sedimentary basins, such as saline aquifers, depleted hydrocarbon reservoirs, and unmineable coal seams, basaltic formations offer more significant advantages in geologic CO2 storage. Specifically, basaltic formations can form stable carbonates through reactions between CO2 and rock minerals while also exhibiting extensive distribution, considerable potential for CO2 storage, and low risk of CO2 leakage. The engineering feasibility of geologic CO2 storage in basaltic formations has been validated by the …

Insomnia, The Witch, And The Dark Passenger As Shadow Projections In Joharah Al-Remal's Al-Awsaj, Dr. Afaf Al-Enezi Jan 2026

Insomnia, The Witch, And The Dark Passenger As Shadow Projections In Joharah Al-Remal's Al-Awsaj, Dr. Afaf Al-Enezi

Journal of Arabic Sciences and Humanities

This study investigates how psychic repression and identity fragmentation are represented in Joharah Alremal’s Al-Awsaj (2023), asking how inherited trauma and the symbolic Dark Passenger shape the protagonist’s fractured selfhood. It aims to clarify the mechanisms through which insomnia, shadow projection, and the witch’s prophecies externalize unresolved familial wounds. Methodologically, the paper employs a psychoanalytic close reading informed by Jungian theory, situating the novel in comparative dialogue with Jeff Lindsay’s Darkly Dreaming Dexter (2004). The comparison examines both the universality of repressed destructive impulses and cultural trauma specific forms through which trauma manifests. The study finds that negotiations with the …

Human activities, either intentional or unintentional, have significantly influenced the global distribution and genetic composition of many species. The black soldier fly (Hermetia illucens; BSF) is a species native to North America that has rapidly gained commercial importance due to its bioconversion efficiency, upcycling organic waste into higher-value products. Through human-mediated dispersal associated with trade and insect farming, BSF has been introduced widely across the Old World, including Africa, where both wild and captive populations are now established. Despite its expanding global distribution, the demographic history and genomic consequences of these introductions remain poorly understood, particularly in Africa. This work …

Applying The Indian Commerce Clause To Indian Commerce, Adam Crepelle Jan 2026

Applying The Indian Commerce Clause To Indian Commerce, Adam Crepelle

Northwestern University Law Review

Indian country commerce generates tens of billions of dollars annually and is a constant source of litigation. These disputes typically revolve around jurisdictional conflicts: whether states, tribes, or both possess regulatory authority over the business operating in Indian country, particularly those involving non-Indians. Despite numerous court cases, no clear legal framework has emerged, creating pervasive uncertainty regarding fundamental issues, such as state taxation of tribal transactions and the proper forum for resolving Indian country contract disputes. Interestingly, these commercial cases overlook the Indian Commerce Clause—the constitutional provision designed to address such matters.

This Article argues the Indian Commerce Clause prohibits …

Electoral Due Process, Michael S. Kang Jan 2026

Electoral Due Process, Michael S. Kang

Northwestern University Law Review

Hyperpartisanship has hit century-long highs in American politics and is emboldening state government attempts to undermine election outcomes by using control over state lawmaking structure to strip away authority, and sometimes outright unseat, partisan opponents after they win elected office. Even as traditional norms against such moves have eroded, the Supreme Court has taken a pro-partisanship turn in removing judicial checks against such moves under equal protection and constitutional structure. This Article proposes shifting from challenges under those doctrines to a new approach under electoral due process for confronting this new generation of antidemocracy. Federal due process law restricts the …

The Federalism Canons As Ordinary Interpretation, Anthony J. Bellia Jr., Bradford R. Clark Jan 2026

The Federalism Canons As Ordinary Interpretation, Anthony J. Bellia Jr., Bradford R. Clark

Northwestern University Law Review

Scholars remain generally skeptical of substantive canons of statutory interpretation even as courts continue to employ such canons in important cases. Unlike semantic canons, which help judges discern the best meaning of statutory text in context, substantive canons provide tiebreakers when the text is unclear or require special clarity in order for the text to perform certain functions. Among the substantive canons, the so-called “federalism canons” have been singled out for special scrutiny. The federalism canons are a family of canons that require courts to avoid interpreting an act of Congress to divest states of certain sovereign rights or powers—including …

The Establishment That Time Forgot: The Historical Understanding Of Religious Offenses And Their Unconstitutionality In Modern Law, Benjamin J. Citow Jan 2026

The Establishment That Time Forgot: The Historical Understanding Of Religious Offenses And Their Unconstitutionality In Modern Law, Benjamin J. Citow

Northwestern University Law Review

This Note argues that religious offenses, meaning laws which penalize conduct for religious purposes, should be barred by the Establishment Clause of the Constitution, as the Clause was interpreted in Kennedy v. Bremerton School District. This is because Kennedy interpreted the Establishment Clause to prohibit each of the several types of laws which early Americans associated with religious establishment—the historical practice wherein early states would adopt a religion as the state religion and pass various types of laws for its support. And religious offenses, this Note argues, were amongst the types of laws which early Americans so associated with …

The Role Of The U.S. State Department As An Amicus In Foreign Policy Abstention Analysis, Sarah Kurpius Jan 2026

The Role Of The U.S. State Department As An Amicus In Foreign Policy Abstention Analysis, Sarah Kurpius

Northwestern University Law Review

Foreign policy abstention is a novel and unsettled doctrine in international litigation. Unlike other established international litigation abstention doctrines, foreign policy abstention permits courts to decline jurisdiction when adjudication implicates significant foreign policy concerns. First invoked in 2004, the doctrine has since appeared sporadically in case law, most recently in the Eighth Circuit’s decision in Reid v. Doe Run Resources. Yet, its analytical framework remains muddy and amorphous, leading to inconsistent judicial application.

This Note examines one critical factor courts consider when determining whether to apply the foreign policy abstention: the strength of U.S. foreign policy interests in the …

Nutrition Assistance Programs And Pediatric Weight Outcomes: A Systematic Review, Dan Ferris, Genevieve Davison, Tyler Frank, Amanda Gilbert, Fanice Thomas, Sydney Rothman, Kim Lipsey, Sarah Moreland-Russell

2020-Current year OA Pubs

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Food insecurity and pediatric obesity have increased concurrently in the U.S., raising questions about the role of Federal Nutrition Assistance Programs (FNAPs) in shaping weight outcomes. This systematic review examined evidence on relationships between FNAP participation and pediatric weight outcomes.

METHODS: Six databases were searched for U.S.-based, peer-reviewed studies published through July 2024 that assessed FNAP participation and pediatric weight outcomes.

RESULTS: Seventy-five studies met the inclusion criteria, and no consistent pattern indicated that any single FNAP or program type (educational setting-based or direct financial support) reliably reduced or increased childhood overweight or obesity risk. Twenty studies found statistically …

Dispelling The Pessimistic Bias Jan 2026

Dispelling The Pessimistic Bias

Journal of Economics and Finance Education

This paper provides resources and methods for confronting and refuting “the pessimistic bias.” This bias was identified by Bryan Caplan in The Myth of the Rational Voter: Why Democracies Choose Bad Policies (2007.) Caplan defines the pessimistic bias as “a tendency to overestimate the severity of economic problems and underestimate the (recent) past, present, and future performance of the economy.” It originates in the gap between public perceptions and historical reality. Professors and students of economics should: (1) be aware of the problem, and (2) have tools and methods to address this commonly-held bias.
