Mozley's Tribute To Luther, W. Dallmann
Mozley's Tribute To Luther, W. Dallmann
Concordia Theological Monthly
James B. Mozley was appointed Regius Professor of Divinity at Oxford by Gladstone. In January, 1848, he reviewed the enemy Audin's Luther, the neutral Michelet's Luther, and the friendly archdeacon Hare's “Vindication of Luther," printed in Essays, Volume I. These works seem to be the sources of his knowledge of Luther. An Anglo-Catholic, who “has everything but the Pope," he is far from friendly to Luther.

For Communists The Communist Manifesto, joint product of Karl Marx (1818-1883) and Friedrich Engels (1820-1895), is, indeed, an "immortal" document. In the whole realm of communistic literature no other publication has exerted so potent and far-reaching an influence as the Manifesto. In A Handbook of Marxism, the official manual of orthodox Communism, the Manifesto occupies. the first place. The last document in the Handbook, "A Programme of the Communist International" (1928), is, as the "Programme" itself declares, "in a sense a restatement of The Communist Manifesto of 1848 in relation to the imperialist stage of capitalism." The "Programme" repeats verbatim …

Luther And The War Against The Turks, George W. Forell
Luther And The War Against The Turks, George W. Forell
Concordia Theological Monthly
Modern psychoanalysis tells us that disease is the touchstone of the healthy mind. What is true in the realm of psychology is not less true in the realm of ethics. The most terrible disease in the realm of human relations is war, and so we can say that war is the touchstone of a healthy ethical system. In its attitude toward war the weakness of an ethical system is revealed. In the war situation an ethical system is revealed as basically unrealistic if it proves unwilling to face the actual situation and therefore uses the escape of absolute pacifism. It …

Some Famous Scottish Preachers Of Post-Reformation Times, F. R. Webber

It is hard to mention a country that has produced more famous preachers than Scotland. In proportion to the total population Wales may have done so, but the sermons of many of the eminent Welsh preachers have never been translated into English.

The Author Of Hebrews - A Fresh Approach, E. L. Lueker
The Author Of Hebrews - A Fresh Approach, E. L. Lueker
Concordia Theological Monthly
The mystery surrounding the origin of the Letter to the Hebrews has led to endless speculation. The addresses have been sought in Jewish congregations in Italy, in Jerusalem, in Palestine as a whole, in Antioch, in Asia Minor, in Alexandria, or even in some unknown hamlet between the Pillars of Hercules and Damascus. Scholars have also maintained that the congregation was not a Jewish congregation at all, but a Gentile-Jewish congregation probably located in Rome. Farthest from the traditions of the fathers are those who hold that the Letter was sent to a Gentile church.

J. Conrad Dannhauer, the venerable theologian of Strassburg and teacher of Spener, wrote the following words a few years before his death in 1666: "Q. Curtius expressed himself correctly when he said: 'You cannot despise any point in an enemy with impunity; for in despising him you neglect him and so strengthen him.’ This very neglect in a former era gave birth to the Antichrist and, while people slept, enabled him to sow his injurious seeds. Because of indolence, weariness, or an eye that is not sufficiently trained, the same neglect fails to see the tricks of the syncretistic spirit …
