Rhetoric In The New Testament, W. A. Jennrich May 1948

Rhetoric In The New Testament, W. A. Jennrich

Concordia Theological Monthly

It is a most natural and yet striking fact that the New Testament originally was written in Greek. This is striking because the literature of the Greek New Testament had its origin in a Hebrew background; it is natural because the Greek language was the Weltsprache in the century that gave birth to the New Testament.

The Concept Of Authority In The Persuasion Of Christ And St Paul, Robert A. Grunow

Bachelor of Divinity

It will be our purpose in this paper to review some of the more prominent concepts of persuasive authority found in churches today. Emil Brunner And His Idea Of Chrisitan Philosophy, Vernon Boriack Apr 1948

Emil Brunner And His Idea Of Chrisitan Philosophy, Vernon Boriack

Bachelor of Divinity

By this method Christian revelation can maintain its station unblushingly and remain vital and valid for any scientific world view that future generations may evolve. Thus today, Emil Brunner - prolific writer, brilliant lecturer, stirring preacher - has taken his stand and is zealously striving to reinterpret, theologically and philosophically what he thinks Christianity must be made to mean for his community and for the whole world at large if the Church would endure.

Pastoral Psychology, C. A. Behnke Apr 1948

Pastoral Psychology, C. A. Behnke

Concordia Theological Monthly

Writers on pastoral theology, such as our own Dr. Walther, regarded such ability as vital. He describes it, however, not only as "a God-given, practical aptitude of the soul," but also as one that is "acquired by certain means." (Fritz, Pastoral Theology, p. 1.) He, therefore, suggests that a theological student visit hospitals, in order to become better acquainted with the inner life of the sick and to master innate revulsion against disagreeable smells and sights.

An Examination Of The Ethical Injunctions Of St Paul, Herbert T. Mayer Apr 1948

An Examination Of The Ethical Injunctions Of St Paul, Herbert T. Mayer

Bachelor of Divinity

Its only purpose is to highlight the ethical portions in the writings of Paul. It will do this by emphasizing three aspects which have perhaps not received proper stress in many books which discuss this subject. These three aspects will be discussed under the general heading of the new three-fold relationship in which the converted individual finds himself.

The Pastor In His Workshop, L. B. Buchheimer Mar 1948

The Pastor In His Workshop, L. B. Buchheimer

Concordia Theological Monthly

That presupposes, Implies, that the pastor has a workshop and that he works in this shop, commonly termed his study.

"Give attendance to reading" (1 Tim. 4:13) was the Apostle's precept to Timothy. In his judgment, diligent study was an essential duty of a minister of Christ. That his practice was in accordance with his teaching appears not only from his manifold learning, both sacred and secular, which he displays in his writings, but also from his anxiety to have his "books" with him, even when he was "ready to be offered, and the time of his departure was at …

The Word Principle In Martin Luther, Carl Walther Berner Jan 1948

The Word Principle In Martin Luther, Carl Walther Berner

Concordia Theological Monthly

Lucid as sunlight are the verses of the Holy Bible which declare that all spiritual life is from the Holy Spirit in the Word. We are born anew by the Word; we are kept in the faith by the Word; we are led to a fruit-bearing life by the Word; we are armor-plated against enemy forces by the Word. Simon Peter lifts his voice majestically to say that we are "born again not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, by the Word of God, which liveth and abideth forever." Earlier in the same chapter he had reminded those who were …

The United Church Of Christ In Japan: An Analysis Of The Background Of And Trends Toward Unity In Religion And State Resulting In The Creation Of The United Protestant Church In Japan, Earl Van Best

Graduate Thesis Collection

This thesis is a limited expression of many years of interest in and love for the Kingdom of God in Japan. It is offered as a lay critique of the bases from which have developed trends toward unity in state and religion. It has been difficult not to descend to the level of a biased judge on the one hand or to scale the heights of the prophet on the other-, what with the alarming amount of misinformation available suggestive of the possibility of dramatic pronouncements based on half-truths. The Clan System, Shrine worship, war records, and the supposed reasons …
