The Industrial Chaplain, Paul John Thielo Jun 1956

The Industrial Chaplain, Paul John Thielo

Bachelor of Divinity

Under the inspiration of such Industrial Chaplains as Reverend Geiseman and with the incentive of sharing the fruits of this ministry with others the author has written this paper. He felt our church must be informed about this work amongst the industrial workers. It is his hope that this paper will in some measure acquaint the church with this one facet of the church's potential ministry to the industrial worker.

The Importance And Means In Achieving A Balance In Appeals To Intellect And To Emotionin Preaching, Arnim Henry Polster Jun 1956

The Importance And Means In Achieving A Balance In Appeals To Intellect And To Emotionin Preaching, Arnim Henry Polster

Bachelor of Divinity

The study seeks to determine the relationship of intellect and emotion in preaching, to discover the relative importance of each, and to point out the factors involved in achieving a balance between appeals to intellect and appeals to emotion. Preaching tends in varying degrees to the extreme of dogmatic lecturing on the one hand, and on the other, to the extreme of the revivalistic tent-service. Therefore, answers to these questions are here sought: (1) What is the nature and importance of intellectual appeal in preaching? (2) What is the nature and importance of emotional appeal in preaching? (3) What is …

Filing And Indexing Methods For Students And Pastors, Palmer G. Ruschke Jun 1956

Filing And Indexing Methods For Students And Pastors, Palmer G. Ruschke

Bachelor of Divinity

Since the average pastor has available no one qualified to assist him in this task, he must do most of it himself. Aside from the task of reading and evaluating printed materials, the pastor must find some way of storing these materials and organizing them so as to have available the materials he needs, when he needs them. Dr. Elgin S. Moyer, librarian at Moody Bible Institute, reports a comment from one of his professors, “There are two ways of securing the information we need; one, having it in our memory, and the other, knowing where to find what we …

A Study Of Jesus' Counseling Techniques With Individuals In The Gospel Of St John Chapters Three And Four, Edward A. Rauff Jun 1956

A Study Of Jesus' Counseling Techniques With Individuals In The Gospel Of St John Chapters Three And Four, Edward A. Rauff

Bachelor of Divinity

The problem which this paper attempts to study and solve: Can the non- directive or psychanalytic approaches to counseling subtly presupposed in most counseling literature be the modus operandi of the Christian minister when these approaches are examined against the attitudes and methods of Jesus towards individuals as recorded in the Gospels, especially chapters three and four of St. John?

The Concept Of Human Nature And Destiny In Recent Psycho-Sociological Studies, Paul Heyne Jun 1956

The Concept Of Human Nature And Destiny In Recent Psycho-Sociological Studies, Paul Heyne

Bachelor of Divinity

The emphasis in this paper will be on the Neo-Freudians, the “psych-sociologists” who made use of Freud’s method and in the course of their investigation developed a concept of human nature radically different from his. The continuities will be stressed throughout, for this paper is intended to indicate the similarities and the differences between the “scientific” theory of human nature whose study Freud initiated and the traditional theory of Christianity.

An Investigation Of The Factors Of Persuasion In The Sermons Of Dr Walter A Maier, Lester Zeitler Jun 1956

An Investigation Of The Factors Of Persuasion In The Sermons Of Dr Walter A Maier, Lester Zeitler

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

The scope of this investigation, however, is confined only to the preaching on the program; more exactly, the preaching of Dr. Walter A. Maier. The specific purpose is to search out those factors of persuasion in the radio sermons of Dr. Maier which may so largely help to account for his success in preaching the Gospel. The object is to figure out the secret of his effectiveness as Andrew Blackwood suggests: "Study the methods of the radio preacher whom your thoughtful laymen enjoy, and figure out the secrets of his effectiveness. You will find that he depends mainly on being …

An Open Letter To The Publisher Of "Masonic Inspiration.", Paul M. Bretscher

Concordia Theological Monthly

This is a reply to your articles which appeared in Masonic Inspiration (April and July 1955), the one headed "Martin Luther- Our Illustrious Brother Mason" and the other "An Open Letter to Lutherans Spreading Anti-Masonic Propaganda." In the latter you attempt to provide evidence that though Luther may not have been a Mason himself, the friends who kidnapped and brought him safely to the Wartburg were members of the guild of Steinmetzen and therefore, so you conclude, Masons. In the same article you also attempt to refute objections raised by some Lutherans against religious and unchristian aspects and teachings of …

Rudolf Bultmann's Concept Of Myth And The New Testament, Oscar Cullmann Jan 1956

Rudolf Bultmann's Concept Of Myth And The New Testament, Oscar Cullmann

Concordia Theological Monthly

Is it necessary to add a new contribution to the dossier, already too voluminous, of the debate revolving around the publication of Rudolf Bultmann, former professor on the faculty of Protestant theology at Marburg, titled The New Testament and Mythology? This small pamphlet, which may be considered a manifesto and has since been reproduced by the author in a slightly different form, appeared for the first time in 1941 under the title Offenbarung und Heilsgeschehen. The purpose of the author is to make the New Testament language accessible to the modern mind by eliminating what he calls the "myth" and …
