Conceptions Of Formative Processes In Western Science And Eastern Philosophy, Glenn E. Kaufmann Jan 1958

Conceptions Of Formative Processes In Western Science And Eastern Philosophy, Glenn E. Kaufmann

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The central theme of this paper concerns the way Eastern and Western (sometimes termed Oriental and Occidental) thought view the formation of the world; the means of arriving at these conclusions and the concepts or pre-conceived ideas upon which they are based. Western thought has been limited to views that have developed out of modern science, post-1500; they are mechanistic science, evolution, Whitehead's philosophy pertaining to God and modern physics. For the purpose of this paper, the emphasis in Eastern thought is placed on Mahayana Buddhism, especially the Madhyamika school of philosophy. In India it developed in contact with many …

A Comparative Study Of The Problem Of Abstraction Versus Experience Between East And West (As Exemplified In Selected Eastern And Western Sages), Leo Jacob Zeff

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

This thesis is a comparative study of the teachings of a number of Eastern sages and a representative of modern Western depth psychology in connection with the problem of abstraction versus experience (or, thinking about instead of experiencing}. This problem is considered by the writer as the central cause in the suffering of mankind everywhere.

The introductory chapter will present the problem being investigated, why and how it is considered significant, and how it will be dealt with in this study. The second chapter will contain a presentation of the various sages to be considered here, how and why they …

Visitation Evangelism In American Churches (Concluded), A. Karl Boehmke Oct 1957

Visitation Evangelism In American Churches (Concluded), A. Karl Boehmke

Concordia Theological Monthly

In keeping with the proposition that it is impossible for any one evangelism method to apply perfectly to any and all circumstances, consideration is now given to points of strength and weakness in the basic visitation procedure. What was this evangelism technique capable of contributing to the work of the church and the ongoing program of the kingdom of Christ? What may have been expected of the plan but should not have been required?

Marxist Humanism In Dialogue With Christianity, Richard Lischer Jun 1957

Marxist Humanism In Dialogue With Christianity, Richard Lischer

Bachelor of Divinity

In this paper I will attempt to follow Garaudy's suggestion, mentioned above, and retain my own Christian perspective. With that factor in mind, plus an obvious limitation of space, much of the Christian doctrine of man will be presupposed.as I investigate Marxist humanism. The goal of this paper is not the isolation of two humanistic concerns but the description and analysis of their intersection.

Attitudes And Policies Of The Lutheran Church Toward The Negro, George Hans Liebenow Jun 1957

Attitudes And Policies Of The Lutheran Church Toward The Negro, George Hans Liebenow

Bachelor of Divinity

We believe that when Christian congregations make a distinction among people because of race and bypass Negroes in their program of saving souls a problem of moral theology is involved. Dr. o. P. Kretzmann, president of Valparaiso University, once offered the following steps to aid in solving a problem in moral theology, namely, first, there must be a hard cool appraisal of the situation as it is; secondly, we must turn to the New Testament and look at the divine will; thirdly, we must take the situation and the divine will and bring them together. In this paper we propose …

Principles Of Planning A Manual For Use By The Pupil In First-Year Confirmation Class, Paul Richard Malte Jun 1957

Principles Of Planning A Manual For Use By The Pupil In First-Year Confirmation Class, Paul Richard Malte

Bachelor of Divinity

The study summarized in this thesis was undertaken to explore the principles of producing a guidebook for the Lutheran pupil in first-year confirmation class. The need for a guidebook--psychologically, educationally, theologically, and aesthetically adequate--was brought home to the writer by experience in confirmation class teaching and by conversation with other pastor-teachers. The need was accentuated not primarily by the failure of any manual currently available, but by the desire for a manual which would be more useful, interest-catching, and challenging. This considered need, then, motivated the research into principles which might undergird the construction of such a guidebook.

The Psychology Of Persuasive Preaching With Special Reference To The Campus Ministry, Kenneth Lee Frerking Jun 1957

The Psychology Of Persuasive Preaching With Special Reference To The Campus Ministry, Kenneth Lee Frerking

Bachelor of Divinity

Hence the Christian preacher will seek to direct his Message to the ear of his audience in the clearest and most Powerful manner possible. He must be like a window through which the light of' God’s Word shines to the hearer. This implies that the preacher must understand the defects of public speech which cause a man to seem unpersuasive, self-conscious, or distasteful to an audience. It means that will have to cultivate harmonious cooperation between his Own mind and emotions, speech organs and body, to the end that become a good channel for the Word of God toward people. …

Was Luther A Nominalist?, Bengt Haegglund Jun 1957

Was Luther A Nominalist?, Bengt Haegglund

Concordia Theological Monthly

The problem of the relation between Luther and the tradition which derives its name from William of Occam has in our time acquired a new interest. Certain Roman Catholic critics are inclined to ascribe the Reformer's heretical ideas to nominalist influences. According to them nominalism bears within itself a ferment of dissolution; it rejects in a radical manner the fundamental presuppositions of the whole scholastic theology. Is such a view based on an accurate representation of nominalism? This is a question which we cannot answer within the limits of the present article.

A Study Of The Effects Of Christianization Upon The Religious Structure Of Primitive Society As Reflected Among The Ibo People Of Southeasteren Nigeria West Africa-, Duane Mehl Jun 1957

A Study Of The Effects Of Christianization Upon The Religious Structure Of Primitive Society As Reflected Among The Ibo People Of Southeasteren Nigeria West Africa-, Duane Mehl

Bachelor of Divinity

As the title of this thesis indicates, the problem under investigation is the effects of Christianization upon the religious structure of primitive society, especially in so far as these effects have been noted among the Ibo peoples of southeastern Nigeria. The emphasis is to be placed upon the word "society." We are interested in the religious beliefs of the African people because they profoundly influence the formation of the tribe. We are not interested in these beliefs from a theological point of view. This means that we shall not delve into the theological implications which are involved in mission activity …

Teaching For The Intergration Of The Christian Personality, Ronald Arthur Michel Jun 1957

Teaching For The Intergration Of The Christian Personality, Ronald Arthur Michel

Bachelor of Divinity

Teaching for a full-orbed commitment or for the complete integration of the Christian personality is not substitution for the work of the Holy Spirit. God. has placed the means for Christian education into human hands, for He has given the Church the command to teach the Word of God through which the Holy Spirit enters into the hearts of men. Christians educators are co-workers of the Holy Spirit in achieving the desired goal.

This, then, is the purpose of this paper: that we discuss those factors which are essential in teaching for the fullest possible commitment to Jesus Christ.

The Practice Of Hymn Singing During The Sixteenth Century, Theodore Paul Klammer Jun 1957

The Practice Of Hymn Singing During The Sixteenth Century, Theodore Paul Klammer

Bachelor of Divinity

If this work of restoring an intelligent appreciation and usage of the Lutheran musical heritage and traditions is to continue and become increasingly effective, it becomes apparent that every minister of' the Church, whether pastor, choirmaster, or organist, must to a greater or lesser degree study and become acquainted with the musical principles and usages of the Church in her golden age, the sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries. This thesis is an effort in that direction.

Preaching The Law And Persuasion, Paul Boecler Jun 1957

Preaching The Law And Persuasion, Paul Boecler

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

The second chapter of this thesis describes in full the problem which has stimulated this investigation. Stated briefly here, it involves man's natural rejection and refusal of the .fact to confront and confess his guilt. Man most generally defends himself from the truth of God's Law in order to protect his own ego. This, of course, makes it difficult, for- the Gospel to have its .full effect and application. This problem also emphasizes the importance of this study in that it tries to discover techniques whereby the Law may be preached so that it is not defended against by the …

The Pastor As Administrator Of Christian Education, Harold J. Elmer May 1957

The Pastor As Administrator Of Christian Education, Harold J. Elmer

Western Evangelical Seminary Theses

We are living in one of history's most serious periods in a fast shrinking world where time and space are the essence. In time because of the great acceleration in the progress of science, in space because of a fast shrinking world that puts the nations elbows sharply one against another causing widespread disruption, confusion, diversion and aggression. Temporary expedients and the necessity to be first in the race in temporal importance has caused most Americans to forget their spiritual heritage and with new temptations and frustrations the.y either turn against all forms of religion to secularism and a materialistic …

The Paradox In Perspective, Martin H. Scharlemann May 1957

The Paradox In Perspective, Martin H. Scharlemann

Concordia Theological Monthly

Paradox" is an ancient word and an honorable one. The Greeks applied it to anything that seemed contrary to public opinion or strange and marvelous. In this latter sense the term occurs in the New Testament. It was heard on the lips of the multitude that saw the healing of the palsied man. "We have seen παοάδοξα today," they said in astonishment and awe (Luke 5:26). In Latin authors "paradox" came to mean an apparent contradiction. This is today its most common meaning in ordinary speech, although we must hasten to add that the Christian continues to feel in it …
