"All Dreams Follow The Mouth": The Dream-Interpreter As Prophet, Ken Frieden

Religion - All Scholarship

Freud's "talking cure" and methods of dream interpretation have occasionally
been understood in the context of Jewish traditions, yet the nature
of this association remains a matter of dispute} Without making any
claims concerning influence or continuity, this essay attends to some resonances
between Talmudic, Freudian, and Lacanian thought, which no
doubt merit a full-length study.

It Does Matter What You Do: How Practical Choices Reflect Theology, John O. Nelson Jan 1990

It Does Matter What You Do: How Practical Choices Reflect Theology, John O. Nelson

Institute of Liturgical Studies Occasional Papers

(Excerpt)

We would all, I trust, agree with the centrality of baptism for Lutheran theology and its importance for Lutheran liturgical renewal. Yet, how many of us are from parishes where baptisms, if done during the Sunday assembly at all, are at small, out of the way fonts, with a few drops of water, no candles or oil, and little or no congregational involvement? Certainly, the baptism is valid, but is it salutary? Have we done any more than meet the "lifetime minimum requirement of grace"? Have we lost a wonderful opportunity to celebrate the richness of grace poured out …

An Approach To Seventh-Day Adventist Radio Evangelism In Ghana, Ebenezer Obodai Sackey Jan 1990

An Approach To Seventh-Day Adventist Radio Evangelism In Ghana, Ebenezer Obodai Sackey

Doctor of Ministry Projects

Since Ghana gained independence from colonial rule, religious broadcasting has undergone self- and governmental censorship. Post-independence governments have either clamped down on the activities of church organizations by disagreeing with them or have intimidated them in numerous ways to tone down some aspects of their activities that the government considers unacceptable. In recent times, both individual Ghanaians and government functionaries, especially, have looked at the Christian church with suspicion and skepticism. Many of them consider the Christian message, at least in the way it is presented, out of touch with, and irrelevant to the everyday needs and realities of the …

Viewpoints: In Dialogue With Hindus? My Experience And Reflections, Sr. Vandana

Journal of Hindu-Christian Studies

Today, in our pluralistic global village, with its technological civilization, ecological disasters, socio-economic-political oppression apparently crumbling churches, and religion seemingly becoming increasingly redundant especially in the West, wondrous vistas are opened up in the spiritual world. For, I do believe, that as religions in past centuries often served to divide us, in the coming decades and century, spirituality will unite us more and more. "Indeed the hour is coming and is already here ... when the Father will be worshipped in spirit and in truth" (John 4.23-24), irrespective of religions. Today too, it is hardly possible to be a good …

Religion And Chinese Culture: Toward An Assessment Of "Popular Religion", Catherine M. Bell Aug 1989

Religion And Chinese Culture: Toward An Assessment Of "Popular Religion", Catherine M. Bell

Religious Studies

Shifts in terminology may be harbingers of a revolutionary new paradigm or a repackaging of older dilemmas. Recently some terminological rearrangements have emerged with sufficient consistency in studies of Chinese religion and culture to warrant examination of their implicit assumptions and practical ramifications. In brief, the trend in the study of Chinese religion, and in the history of religions generally, has been to talk of "popular religion," "local religion," or, most recently, "popular religious cultures" instead of "folk" and "elite" religions or "great" and "little" traditions.' Certainly, the problems besetting the older terms have been amply debated and demonstrated. However, …

The Educational Needs Of The Adult Layperson Concerning The Mission Of God_Research Towards Writing An Introductory Adult Mission Education Course, Stephen Gaulke May 1989

The Educational Needs Of The Adult Layperson Concerning The Mission Of God_Research Towards Writing An Introductory Adult Mission Education Course, Stephen Gaulke

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

What are the educational needs of an adult layperson concerning world mission? What ought an introductory adult mission education study course attempt to teach? This thesis endeavors to answer the question in three chapters.

Chapter One articulates a concise theology of mission. Rooted in Scripture, especially the mission commands of the risen Savior, and drawing on the Apostles' Creed, The Book of Concord, and Martin Luther, Chapter One sketches the "who, what, where, when, why, and how" of God's mission.

Chapter Two surveys mission professionals to discover what they believe an introductory adult study course on world mission ought to …

Historical Foundations: Studies Of Literary References To Hesban And Vicinity, Arthur J. Ferch, Malcolm B. Russell, Werner K. Vyhmeister

All Books

"Historical contextualization is vitally important in attaining a view of Tell Hesban as its contemporaries described it. A spectrum of periods are analyzed from their contemporary literary sources: pre-classical and classical sources (Werner K. Vyhmeister), Arab sources (Malcolm B. Russell), a review of critical studies of Old Testament references to the site (Arthur J. Ferch), and traveller's accounts since 1806 (Werner K. Vyhmeister)." AU Press catalogue

Quest For The Religious Freud: Faith, Morality, And Gender In Psychoanalysis, Diane Jonte-Pace Jan 1989

Quest For The Religious Freud: Faith, Morality, And Gender In Psychoanalysis, Diane Jonte-Pace

Religious Studies

The recent scholarship on Freud is guilty of the same kind of ideological projection as that uncovered by Albert Schweitzer in his 1906 exposé of the assumptions underlying the "historical Jesus" scholarship: the search for the religious Freud evinces a search for an atheist, Christian, or Jew who mirrors the personal and intellectual assumptions of the seeker. Ironically, of the three issues emerging as central concerns in recent literature on Freud-Jewishness, ethics, and gender-Jewishness and ethics were also the focus of heated debate among nineteenth-century Biblical scholars.
