Sharing Hearts: Buddhist Charity And Urbanization In Vietnam, Sara Ann Swenson Jul 2021

Sharing Hearts: Buddhist Charity And Urbanization In Vietnam, Sara Ann Swenson

Dissertations - ALL

My dissertation analyzes how and why volunteers joined or established grassroots Buddhist charities in Ho Chi Minh City. I spoke with approximately 400 members of 25 charities, focusing on seven main groups that shared an overlapping network of volunteers. My research includes perspectives from demographic groups often excluded from positions of authority in institutionalized Buddhism and, in turn, Buddhist studies scholarship, such as low-income day laborers, elderly women, Buddhist nuns at peri-urban temples, and a lay community of queer "same-gender-loving" [đồng tính] men. Despite their marginalization from formal leadership in Vietnam's state-managed National Buddhist Sangha, volunteers claimed social and moral …

Christianity And Fear: The Neuropsychological Processes Involved In The Relationship Between Fear And Religion, Courtney Welch-Horstman Jul 2021

Christianity And Fear: The Neuropsychological Processes Involved In The Relationship Between Fear And Religion, Courtney Welch-Horstman

Obsculta

Religion frames the lives and minds of individuals who practice the Christian faith. Regarding the mind, this statement can be understood both figuratively and literally. The thought processes of human beings who claim to believe in God are strongly influenced by their perspective of Deity and what they think God's primary characteristic is. While some view God as loving, others view God as mainly angry and punishing. The way this question is answered by an individual reveals much about his or her neurocircuitry and which brain structures are most active and developed. These circuits and structures then impact the behaviors …

Reflections On A Pandemic, Leah Wakefield

Obsculta

This provides a personal ethical reflection on issues raised during the Covid-19 pandemic and racial justice movements and how these themes connect to the themes of hope, destruction, chaos, and resurrection as depicted in the Synoptic Gospels, particularly the Gospel of Mark.

We Come From The Same Body: Reflecting On The Feasibility Of Women's Participation In Liturgical Services From The Perspective Of Susan A. Ross’S Feminist Theology, And Reflecting On The Practice Of Relevant Theories In The Diocese Of Hong Kong, Wong Kwan Yau Jul 2021

We Come From The Same Body: Reflecting On The Feasibility Of Women's Participation In Liturgical Services From The Perspective Of Susan A. Ross’S Feminist Theology, And Reflecting On The Practice Of Relevant Theories In The Diocese Of Hong Kong, Wong Kwan Yau

Obsculta

In this paper, I discuss the relationship between feminism and women’s liturgical service in the church from three aspects. In the first part, I will give a general description about the development of women’s social status, hoping to show that how women have always struggling to survive and strive for reasonable treatment in societies dominated by men. In the second part, I will turn to the work of Susan A. Ross, a Catholic feminist theologian, and show how from a feminist perspective, women can serve the church with men with their unique circumstances and advantages, and at the same time, …

Women In Religio-Cultural History: A Reflection On Their Representation In Hugo Hinfelaar’S Scholarly Work In Zambia,1960s To 1990s, Nelly Mwale, Joseph Chita Jul 2021

Women In Religio-Cultural History: A Reflection On Their Representation In Hugo Hinfelaar’S Scholarly Work In Zambia,1960s To 1990s, Nelly Mwale, Joseph Chita

Zambia Social Science Journal

Although Catholic missionary historians have contributed to the writing of Zambia’s many histories, the attempt at documenting women’s place in religio-cultural history in the country has been overshadowed by the prominence of masculine histories. Using the example of Hugo Hinfelaar who captures women’s histories in his scholarly work, this article explores the representation of the place of women in the religio-cultural history of Zambia in order to highlight Hinfelaar’s contributions to the study of women and to Zambia’s religio-cultural history. Informed by African feminist theory, it draws on a historical study which utilises document review and analyses the data through …

Black Lips Don't Turn Blue: A Womanist Critique Of Discriminatory Language In Medical Education, Alison Lawrence Jul 2021

Black Lips Don't Turn Blue: A Womanist Critique Of Discriminatory Language In Medical Education, Alison Lawrence

Womanist Ethics

This paper examines race and gender inequities in healthcare as it pertains to the unequal presentation of descriptors of illness in medical textbooks. The author adopts a womanist perspective to criticize the use of the white male body as the standard for all patients, which causes signs and symptoms in women and people of color to be dismissed as less important. Following an analysis of normalizing language in current medical texts as well as its consequences for patients, the author calls for a system-wide shift to more inclusive, intersectional medical education that not only acknowledges differences among patient groups, but …

From “White Fathers” To “Black Fathers” In Kasama And Mpika Dioceses In Zambia, Anthony B. Tambatamba, Austin M. Cheyeka, Tomaida C. Milingo

Zambia Social Science Journal

Employing the missiological theory of Henry Venn (1796-1873) and Rufus Anderson (1796-1880) on indigenisation of churches, this article explores the lived experiences of black Zambian Catholic clergymen, nuns, catechists and lay people at some of the mission stations that were once in the hands of Missionaries of Africa, popularly known as White Fathers, from 1891to1991 in the Archdiocese of Kasama and Diocese of Mpika. To write about the White Fathers from the point of view of our interviewees accords us an auspicious opportunity to pay tribute to Fr. Hugo Hinfelaar to whom this article and this particular issue of the …

Female Initiation Rites As Part Of Gendered Bemba Religion And Culture: Transformations In Women’S Empowerment, Thera Rasing Jul 2021

Female Initiation Rites As Part Of Gendered Bemba Religion And Culture: Transformations In Women’S Empowerment, Thera Rasing

Zambia Social Science Journal

Since the 1930s, female initiation rites have been a topic of interest for both anthropologists and certain White Fathers like Fr Corbeil and Fr Hinfelaar. Although the rites have been examined from various viewpoints, e.g. structural-functionalist viewpoints in the first half of the 20th century (Richards, 1940, 1956), and later by symbolic anthropologists (Rasing, 1995, 2001, 2004, and Simonsen, 2000a and 2000b), they are now mainly explained in terms of unequal gender relations and sexuality (Kamlongera, 1987; Kalunde, 1992). During my ongoing research (1992–2016), I was inspired by the interpretation of these rites by Hugo Hinfelaar, who, although not the …

Where Is Wisdom? Privileging Perspectives In The Book Of Job, Israel Mcgrew Jul 2021

Where Is Wisdom? Privileging Perspectives In The Book Of Job, Israel Mcgrew

Dissertations (1934 -)

Job is one of the most difficult books in Hebrew Scripture: in language, poetic rhetoric, subject matter, and literary form. Many scholars understand the book as skeptical literature, as the poetry, the bulk of the book, refutes any justification of God’s activity in history. The matter is acute, as these scholars recognize the poetry’s parodic allusions to Hebrew Scripture and mythological traditions. The poet’s protagonist charges God with immoral conduct, judges the human experience morally incoherent, and despairs of vindication in an afterlife. The whirlwind rebukes Job, Job seems to repent, and the epilogue indicates that God in fact does …

A Church Educator’S Guide To Identifying And Helping The Scrupulous Student, Debra Theobald Mcclendon

Religious Educator: Perspectives on the Restored Gospel

Educators in the Church Educational System teach gospel doctrines and knowledge of the scriptures and also counsel students about personal issues such as strengthening testimony, learning how to receive personal revelation, working through difficult family or social circumstances, and solving specific issues in their lives. This often creates bonds of trust with students and students will often approach teachers with their intimate spiritual and temporal concerns.

Washington Street Baptist Church: Training Leaders For Community Outreach, Latasha Fabrae Culkin Jul 2021

Washington Street Baptist Church: Training Leaders For Community Outreach, Latasha Fabrae Culkin

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

This DMIN action research thesis aims to create and implement additional leadership training for those who have completed prior leadership training, explicitly addressing community outreach, the purpose of the church, the outside culture, and the disciplines of a church leader. When Christian leaders go outside the church, connect with the culture, model an authentic Christian life, and use their gifts, the church is influential. When the Christian leader works in the secular arena with people who are not saved, and when the Christian leaders take their skills and training outside the four walls, they change that working community for Christ. …

Educating The Congregation On The Role Of The Pastoral Counselor, Richard Laverne Wilkins

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

This thesis project is to educate the church staff, church members, and local surrounding community on the pastoral counseling practices of Good Shepherd United Methodist Church (GSUMC) and a licensed professional counseling center located on the church premises. The purpose is to ensure that those who attend the church, whether on a weekly basis or less frequently, are aware of the counseling services that are offered.
