Thee Pastor At The Bedside Of The Unbeliever, F C. Streufert Aug 1930

Thee Pastor At The Bedside Of The Unbeliever, F C. Streufert

Concordia Theological Monthly

If we are called to the bedside of a patient who has no knowledge of the Word of God, to the bedside of the unbeliever, this is done in most instances not at the request of the patient, but upon the suggestion of one of the family or a friend. It cannot be otherwise. How can any one have a desire to hear concerning Christ of whom he knows nothing and in whom he does not believe. It is a sad fact that many, though they are at death's door, in spite of all are filled with hatred against the …

Sermon Study On Eph. 2, 19-22, O W. Wismar Jun 1930

Sermon Study On Eph. 2, 19-22, O W. Wismar

Concordia Theological Monthly

Pentecost, 1930 A. D., which reminds us that the nineteen hundredth anniversary of the great day described Acts 2 is upon us. And the Lord, who sent His Holy Spirit in accordance with His promise, has not yet returned. "from thence" in His glory, as He has also promised. Faithful is He that promised, and He it is who calls to us even now: "He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith to the churches."

The Effects Of Newman's Mediterranean Voyage On His Conversion, Herbert E. Hengsbach Jun 1930

The Effects Of Newman's Mediterranean Voyage On His Conversion, Herbert E. Hengsbach

Bachelors’ Theses

The purpose of this thesis is to give a detailed account of the travels of John Henry Newman in eighteen hundred and thirty-two, stressing and discussing the events which influenced Newman most in his conversion to the Catholic faith. This thesis aims at more than a mere tabulation of events; it is to be a cross-section of Newman's life during the period of a year. This discussion, also, will attempt to disprove the Protestant theory stating that Newman was converted: because he was of a Catholic temperament and that religion is merely a matter of temperament. During this eventful voyage, …

Christian Spirit In Horace's Odes, Gertrude E. Stangler Apr 1930

Christian Spirit In Horace's Odes, Gertrude E. Stangler

Bachelors’ Theses

To point out the Christian spirit in Horace’s odes seems an almost impracticable, impossible problem upon first thought, For how can a person possess the spirit of a religion or system of philosophy of which there is no knowledge, in fact, whose very existence has not yet become a reality? Therein lies the problem! For, Horace was, as we know, a pagan--perhaps one of the most pagan writers of the ages and yet we say he possessed a Christian spirit. And so he did. But, is it necessary to adopt a certain religion or certain forms of worship in order …

Sermon On Newton's Hymn For New Year's Eve, W G. Polack Jan 1930

Sermon On Newton's Hymn For New Year's Eve, W G. Polack

Concordia Theological Monthly

Many thoughts crowd our hearts to-night. We think of the past year, and the multifarious events of another stage of our life's pilgrimage flit: rapidly across the screen of memory. We think of the coming year and speculate as to what may lie in store for us behind the dark and impenetrable curtain of the future. Such thoughts come to Christian and worldling alike. But while the worldling plunges himself into an orgy of pleasure at this time, the Christian turns to serious meditation.

That is what you have come here to do. To that end I have chosen for …

The ancient Egyptians believed in the immortality of the Soul and in Rebirth.  The Egyptian embalming of the dead originated in their belief in a life beyond the grave.  Polytheism and Ancestor worship prevailed in the earlier ages and as far back as history can trace it.

The Personification Of Abstract Virtues As Represented In Four Roman Goddesses : Concordia, Fides, Pietas, And Spes, Dorothea Quitzow Jan 1930

The Personification Of Abstract Virtues As Represented In Four Roman Goddesses : Concordia, Fides, Pietas, And Spes, Dorothea Quitzow

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Roman literature and history clearly show that the Romans in the days of the Emperors constantly deified many of the abstract terms which to us designate qualities of character, or ideals worthy of emulation in life. Among the more significant of these are such ideas as faith, honor, intellect, concord, fidelity, hope, chastity, and understanding.

It is the purpose of this thesis to discuss the development of some of these virtues as they were represented through the mythological deification with which the Romans invested them. The goddesses, Concordia, Fides, Pietas, and Spes are herein presented as illustrating this popular and …
