The Great Awakening In The United States, Richard C. Stuckmeyer May 1934

The Great Awakening In The United States, Richard C. Stuckmeyer

Bachelor of Divinity

In America today, customary usage interprets the term revival as generally applying to special religious services, protracted for a term of days or weeks, in which unusual efforts are put forth to reach the unconverted for the purpose of bringing them to repentance and winning them to lives of Christian faith and service. It is in this regard also that the Great Awakening has been termed a revival, for it extended over a period of years wherein special emphasis was put on emotional preaching for the purpose of arousing people to a rebirth of religious life. This fact will be …

The Concept Of Hope In The New Testament, Oswald W. Mieger Apr 1934

The Concept Of Hope In The New Testament, Oswald W. Mieger

Bachelor of Divinity

We have prefixed this beautiful expression of the Christian’s Hope in full because it delineates the one point which we wish to emphasize in this thesis, namely, that the hope which is truly Christian rests solely upon Christ, and in particular upon the merits of His glorious resurrection from the dead, by virtue of which our hope is of inestimable value and worth. It is a fitting forethought for our consideration of the CONCEPT OF HOPE IN THE NEW TESTAMENT.

The Story Of The German Bible, P. E. Kretzmann Apr 1934

The Story Of The German Bible, P. E. Kretzmann

Concordia Theological Monthly

Among the many remarkable books which were produced during the golden age of Latin literature there is none which in point of interest and appeal exceeds the little book of forty-six short chapters written by Tacitus and entitled De Germania (an account of the country of Germany). In this book he gives the general boundaries of the country inhabited by the Germanic tribes; he describes the political and mental characteristics of these strange Northern people, the sources of their wealth, their military equipment and prowess, the influence and sacred character of their women, their gods and their modes of worship, …

Indulgences, Theo. Hoyer Mar 1934

Indulgences, Theo. Hoyer

Concordia Theological Monthly

"One of the stock charges against the Catholic Church is that she sells indulgences for money. First hurled by Luther against the Dominican friar John Tetzel, authorized by Leo X to preach indulgences, this charge has persisted to the present day. While Luther’s blunt assertion that 'Tetzcl sold grace for money at the highest price' has long since been disproven, the impression is still conveyed by many historians that the Church at least in the Middle Agee engaged in wholesale traffic in indulgences… In the minds of vast numbers of our non-Catholic fellow-citizens, the word indulgences stands as the symbol …

Beginnings In Indianapolis, H. M. Zorn

Concordia Theological Monthly

In the mosaic of Missouri Synod history the story of the confessional Lutheranism in Indianapolis ought to be a stone, however small, of some interest. As so often, this story centers upon the spiritual development of one man.

The "New Creation" According To Is. 65, L. Aug. Heerboth Jan 1934

The "New Creation" According To Is. 65, L. Aug. Heerboth

Concordia Theological Monthly

"Behold, I create new heavens and a new earth; and the former shall not be remembered nor come into mind," Is. 65, 17. Of what kind of creation and of what time is the Lord speaking here? Does the "new creation" mean the Christian Church, which began when our Savior established the New Covenant through His redemptive work and the pouring out of the Holy Ghost, so that the "new creation" is a specific name for the New Testament Messianic kingdom? Or does it denote a certain period of Christ’s kingdom here on earth, the so-called millennium, a period of …

Volume 04: 1933-34, St. Mary’S Of The Barrens Seminary (Missouri) Jan 1934

Volume 04: 1933-34, St. Mary’S Of The Barrens Seminary (Missouri)

De Andrein

A major achievement of the students of St. Mary’s of the Barrens was the regular publication of their student newspaper. Originally titled, The Andrean, it began as a typewritten, hand illustrated piece that appears to have been circulated among the student body from 1928 to 1930. In November 1930, the format and title changed to The DeAndrein. The printed newspaper included copies of photographs, and was offered for sale to alumni, family, and friends. This informative publication continued uninterrupted until 1965. Many issues of The DeAndrein (newsletter) from June 1940 to December 1963; various programs, goals, directions, etc.; many pamphlets …
