The Readiness Of The World For The Mission, R. Pierce Beaver Jan 1962

The Readiness Of The World For The Mission, R. Pierce Beaver

Concordia Theological Monthly

"The Readiness of the World for the Mission" or "for the Gospel" has been a favorite argument in the promotion of the mission in Protestant churches for at least a century and a half. Thus John M. Mason, preaching in 1797, exulted in the fact that by the providence of God the most formidable obstacles to the spread of the faith, such as travel, language, manners, had already been overcome by those persons who were primarily serving science, wealth, and fame.

The 1912 Presidential Election In Utah, C. Austin Wahlquist Jan 1962

The 1912 Presidential Election In Utah, C. Austin Wahlquist

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study is to determine why, in the light of local conditions and problems, Utah chose to support President Taft. Why Did Utah prefer the conservative policies of this nationally unpopular figure, while the rest of the nation favored the progressivism of Wilson or the progressivism of Roosevelt? What were the national issues which affected Utah? Who exercised political control in the state? What was the party alignment? How important was newspaper opinion? To what extent was personal friendship for Taft, on the part of local Republican leaders, a factor? Did a recent outbreak of Mormon-non-Mormon friction …

A Historical Study Of The Mormon Temple At Nauvoo, Illinois, Don F. Colvin Jan 1962

A Historical Study Of The Mormon Temple At Nauvoo, Illinois, Don F. Colvin

Theses and Dissertations

The Nauvoo Temple was a unique structure, one which symbolized "Mormonism" in the early period of its history. In its time, the temple stood as the chief structure of the city of Nauvoo. It rivaled all buildings in Illinois and the West during its brief history.

This study reviews the entire history of the temple, from when it was first contemplated until its fateful destruction, and beyond. It sheds light on the setting in which the great edifice was built. Consideration is given to the struggles and sacrifices on the part of workmen and church members who freely gave to …

An Evaluation Of The Beginnings, Purposes, And Influence Of Drama In Ogden From 1840 To 1900, Harold R. Oaks Jan 1962

An Evaluation Of The Beginnings, Purposes, And Influence Of Drama In Ogden From 1840 To 1900, Harold R. Oaks

Theses and Dissertations

During the latter half of the nineteenth century Utah was undergoing physical and cultural colonization. Four months after the first Mormon pioneers arrived in the valley of the Great Salt Lake, the site of Ogden city had been purchased from Miles Goodyear. The city developed slowly during its first twenty years, but when the railroad joined at Promontory Point in 1869, Ogden became the junction of East and West. The city experienced a peculiar economic and cultural boom not known elsewhere in the Mountain West or along the railroad due to the predominately Mormon population which now was imposed upon …

The Relationship Of Empathy And Seminary Teachers' Effectiveness, Chet W. Harris Jan 1962

The Relationship Of Empathy And Seminary Teachers' Effectiveness, Chet W. Harris

Theses and Dissertations

This study was conducted for the primary purpose of discovering the relationship of two personal variables to effective seminary teaching.

It was hypothesized that:
(1) There is no significant difference between seminary teachers whom the department considers as very effective (high-rated) and seminary teachers whose teaching effectiveness is questioned by the department (low-rated) in their ability to empathize with the self concept of their students.
(2) there is no significant difference between seminary teachers who are high-rated and seminary teachers who are low-rated in their ability to sociempathise (perceive student's social status among peers).

Epictetus, Arthur W. Klinck Dec 1961

Epictetus, Arthur W. Klinck

Concordia Theological Monthly

Some time around the year A. D. 70, about the time of the destruction of Jerusalem, a lame and sickly little slave boy was added to the great household of Epaphroditus, freedman and favorite of Nero. Certainly there was nothing to recommend him physically. Yet it may be that that patience and perseverance of spirit so evident throughout his discourses had already begun to show itself in a certain nobility of demeanor which slave work could not erase and slave clothes could not conceal.
