The Vanguard (Vol. 17, No. 7), Sep-Oct 1970, Lutheran Human Relations Association Of America

The Vanguard

Leland Elhard is an Associate Professor of pastoral theology at the Lutheran Theological Seminary in Columbus, Ohio (ALC). He spent four weeks this past summer observing, visiting, and working with the people of the Lutheran churches in the near east side of Baltimore, Maryland, sponsored by the Mutual Enrichment Program of LHRAA. The new and interesting possibilities which emerged from his experience are, it seems to us, worthy of priority consideration by other churches. We are sharing some of his thoughts and insights here. It should not be surprising that what Dr. Elhard says about Baltimore - the city and …

The Church In The Dramas Of T. S. Eliot, Rebecca Ellen Dunn Jan 1970

The Church In The Dramas Of T. S. Eliot, Rebecca Ellen Dunn

All Master's Theses

From the desolation of a sterile Waste Land populated by straw men, Eliot's dramas increasingly portray a world of great meaning and hope. His early dramas portray a hostile and insensible world which must be fought and completely rejected by religious persons who are called to martyrdom and sainthood. Eliot's acceptance of the material world and comfort with its society brings a steady transformation of his spiritual vision when at the end of his dramas the world is one of common people who strive to find meaning and "make the best of a bad job," illumined by a vision of …

The Dream Mine: A Study In Mormon Folklore, Joe Stanley Graham Jan 1970

The Dream Mine: A Study In Mormon Folklore, Joe Stanley Graham

Theses and Dissertations

In September of 1894, John Hyrum Koyle, Jr., said that he was shown in a dream or vision a large, rich deposit of gold and an underground storehouse of artifacts hidden by people of Ancient America. This dream was the beginning of a mining venture which has never produced anything of value, has been opposed vigorously by both officials of the LDS Church and the State, yet has claimed supporters numbered in the thousands.

The mine has profoundly affected (and continues to affect) the lives of many families who have come into the sphere of its influence. The lore of …

He played a vital role in aiding the exiled saints living in Iowa to complete the long exodus to Utah. The first colonizing mission to venture south of Utah Valley was led by George A. Smith. He acted as an …

As a builder, policeman, missionary, wagonmaster and militiaman Appleton Milo Harmon, during his eventful life, took part in many of the important events of early Mormondom. Erasmus The Exegete, Marvin Anderson Dec 1969

Erasmus The Exegete, Marvin Anderson

Concordia Theological Monthly

Erasmus appears everywhere in the theological controversies of the 16th century. Discovery in 1506 of his beloved Lorenzo Valla's New Testament Notes encouraged Erasmus to continue the task of editing, annotating, and paraphrasing the New Testament. Whatever can be said about Erasmus, his dedication to this task has earned the gratitude of generations of Christians. His latest encomium is Erasmus of Christendom. An analysis of Erasmus’ devotion to New Testament study adds depth and breadth to the philosophy of Christ. Heirs of the 16th century should ponder the life work of Erasmus in this 500th anniversary of his birth. In …

Erasmus On The Study Of Scriptures, Carl S. Meyer Dec 1969

Erasmus On The Study Of Scriptures, Carl S. Meyer

Concordia Theological Monthly

Erasmus (1469-1536) was the editor of the first published Greek New Testament printed from movable type (1516). He translated the books of the New Testament into Latin and also paraphrased them (except Revelation) in that language. He published the notes of Lorenzo Valla (1406-1457) on the New Testament. He must likewise be accounted as one of the important theologians of the first half of the 16th century as well as an earnest advocate of the study of Scriptures.

The Movement Toward Religious Liberty: An Examination Of The Factors Responsible For The First Amendment To The Constitution Of The United States, William Grese Nov 1969

The Movement Toward Religious Liberty: An Examination Of The Factors Responsible For The First Amendment To The Constitution Of The United States, William Grese

Bachelor of Divinity

This is the context in which this research paper is written though its goal is much more modest. We do not hope to settle the question of the intent of our founding fathers. But we want to try to determine whether the churches were at all involved in this movement toward religious freedom. Were they in favor of a separation between church and state, or did they only seek to end preference? Or were they not involved at all? At the same time, we also want to examine the various factors responsible for the first amendment and to see what …

Methods In Studying The Biblical Text Today, John Reumann Nov 1969

Methods In Studying The Biblical Text Today, John Reumann

Concordia Theological Monthly

A rich variety of methods exists today for studying Scripture - text criticism, philology, literary criticism; source, form, and redaction criticism, Religionsgeschichte, and a host of other "Geschichten" - so that the Bible is probably the world's most closely and minutely studied book. But how can all these techniques be put together into a method, in the classical sense of meth' hodos, a "way" "after" something, a way for getting from one point to another, from the text to the practical goal that concerns us here, proclaiming or communicating the text today?
