The Vanguard

At first glance this quote may seem to be taken from testimony given concerning the events at My-Lai or Song-My. Actually it is the testimony of an Indian warrior who was at the scene of the massacre at Wounded Knee Creek, South Dakota, in 1890. The quotation is taken from "The Indian in America's Past" edited by Jack D. Forbes, Prentice-Hall, 1964, page 50.

After the cruel death of their daughter in the racist bombing of the Sixteenth Street Baptist Church in Birmingham, Alabama, Mr. and Mrs. Chris McNair did not react in bitter hatred. The release without trial of eight Black Panthers after two years imprisonment; the concerted efforts of the Justice Department to confine the Berrigans and their colleagues; the massive, indiscriminatory arrests in Washington, D.C. of young people (as well as citizens trying to get to work) with an estimated 80 percent of these arrests illegal; the rigid defense of this government action by high officials - these and similar cases can be cited to raise concern over the heavy-handed pattern of law enforcement and government control that may corrode the foundations of a state, and ultimately shackle and destroy people.

History Of The Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter-Day Saints In New Zealand, Brian W. Hunt

Theses and Dissertations

The History of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in New Zealand begins with the arrival of Mormon missionaries in New Zealand in 1854. They established themselves firmly among the Maori people during the 1880's. Their success was influenced by certain Maori prophecies and by the translation of the Book of Mormon into Maori. The LDS church made successful efforts in educating it's members by establishing schools as early as 1886. The mission established the Maori Agriculture College in 1913 and the Church College of New Zealand in 1958. A highlight in the history of the mission was …

The Song Of The Righteous: An Historical And Literary Analysis Of The Latter-Day Saint Hymnal, Ruth Alene Thomson Symons Jan 1971

The Song Of The Righteous: An Historical And Literary Analysis Of The Latter-Day Saint Hymnal, Ruth Alene Thomson Symons

Theses and Dissertations

The hymnal of the Latter-day Saints first proposed only shortly after the organization of the Church and published continually every few years between 1835 and 1871, is a remarkably accurate indicator of the changing fortunes and beliefs of the early Saints. The first hymnal, gathered by Emma Smith, uncompromisingly sets forth the basic Mormon belief in man's free agency, his innate perfectability, and his kinship to his Heavenly Father. Later editions reflect the missionary concerns of the church (1840), the tremendous persecution the saints are subjected to (1841), the Church difficulties after the martyrdom of Joseph Smith (1849), the call …

Totiusque Ecclesiae Suae Sanctae; A Comparison Of The Ecclesiologies Of St. Augustine And Hans Kung, Edward J. Sullivan Jan 1971

Totiusque Ecclesiae Suae Sanctae; A Comparison Of The Ecclesiologies Of St. Augustine And Hans Kung, Edward J. Sullivan

Dissertations and Theses

This paper attempts to compare the ecc1esio1ogies of the fourth century Bishop of Hippo and the controversial twentieth century theo1ogian. In doing so, a study is made of each writer independently in order to extract his conceptual models of the Church. Special significance is given to the names each attributed to the Church and the consequences of these names as they pass from an analogical to an ecc1esio1ogica1 sphere. A study is also made of the functions of office within the Church with respect to the fulfillment of specific ministries. Here the two divide, Augustine meets the Donatist challenge by …

The Brotherly Task, Paul J. Bauermeister Dec 1970

The Brotherly Task, Paul J. Bauermeister

Concordia Theological Monthly

Between the years 1951 and 1956 I sat out there where you are with enough regularity that no one ever got overly concerned about my spiritual condition. Back in those days, it seems to me, there was less concern about the "spiritual condition" and more concern about chapel attendance. I think that's progress. During those years I sat out there I remembered thinking, frequently, that I did not want to be up here in the chancel-ever! - that the good place to be was out there-not up here. I was right; but as we say: That's my problem.

The Interior Warfare, Harry N. Huxhold

Concordia Theological Monthly

In a recent bulletin of the Academy of · Religion and Mental Health a psychiatrist quotes a Harvard junior, "Many students turn into themselves and become preoccupied with their own thoughts and emotions to the point of obsession.'' We should not be surprised. Your generation has been more sensitive to the nature of man and his interior struggle than most generations. The era of Freudian psychology and existential philosophy has exposed the depths of man's psyche to the point of nausea. It was not too long ago that we greeted the Freudian view of man as the clinical evidence of …

Sharing The Body In The Body, Arthur Simon Dec 1970

Sharing The Body In The Body, Arthur Simon

Concordia Theological Monthly

I have little to share with you on the Eucharist and the Christian life other than my own odyssey in this respect, so let me be frankly biographical. What I have learned about the holy meal and the holy life cannot be separated from the agonies and joys of those who have shared the way of Jesus with me, so I am indebted especially to the people of my parish, including, and above all, my colleague John Puelle.
