Some Theological Aspects Of Roman Catholic Responses To Lowland Filipino Spirit-World Beliefs, David John Schneider May 1971

Some Theological Aspects Of Roman Catholic Responses To Lowland Filipino Spirit-World Beliefs, David John Schneider

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

The purpose of this study is to discover the nature of lowland Filipinos’ spirit-world beliefs, from the pre-Spanish era to the present, and to discover theological aspects in the responses or Roman Catholic churchmen to the spirit-world beliefs.

In serving as a Christian pastor to the lowland Filipinos from 1961 to 1970, the writer observed that some people felt spirit beings to be quite active in their lives. He also felt a lack of Christian resources, either Philippine or American, with which to minister to such people. This study was undertaken to determine what resources, if any, the Christian Church …

A Case Study In Exegetical Methodology George Stoeckhardt And Johann Philip Koehler On Ephesians, William John Hassold May 1971

A Case Study In Exegetical Methodology George Stoeckhardt And Johann Philip Koehler On Ephesians, William John Hassold

Doctor of Theology Dissertation

In every church body there have been certain individuals who have exercised decisive leadership and whose influence has continued through the years. In The Lutheran Church--Missouri Synod a listing of such men might include Dr. C. F. w. Walther, Dr. Franz Pieper, Dr. Georg Stoeckhardt, and others. In the Wisconsin Synod the list would certainly include Dr. Adolf Hoenecke, Professors August Pieper, Johann Philip Koehler, and John P. Meyer. Some of these men distinguished themselves as organizational leaders, some as theologians, and some in both areas of church life.

The two individuals whose labors have been of the greatest significance …

Hermeneutics And The Teacher Of Theology, Edgar Krentz

Concordia Theological Monthly

After discussing the use and meaning of the term “Hermeneutics," the author explores both the historical and the critical dimensions necessary in contemporary Biblical study and shows how teachers of theology, their students, and pastors can derive great benefits from such historical-critical studies of the sacred Scriptures.

A Controlled-Interview Study: The Philosophy And Practice Of Chaplain's Services In Four Selected Seventh-Day Adventist Hospitals In Southern California, Richard Huei-Ying Liu

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

It was the purpose of this paper to attempt an understanding of the chaplain's role on the health team, both in the United States and in the Far East, in light of research conducted in four specific Seventh-day Adventist Hospitals: the Glendale Adventist Hospital, the Loma Linda University Medical Center, the Paradise Valley Adventist Hospital, and the White Memorial Medical Center.

Before attempting any field research in the area of chaplaincy, I felt I must understand to some degree the general under lying philosophy of this profession. Thus, both the published and unpublished works of leaders in the field were …

The Attitudes Of The Christian Clergy Of Tulsa, Oklahoma Toward The Place Of Charismata Iamatōn In Their Ministries, Donald John Dallmann May 1971

The Attitudes Of The Christian Clergy Of Tulsa, Oklahoma Toward The Place Of Charismata Iamatōn In Their Ministries, Donald John Dallmann

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

The purpose of this study is to investigate the New Testament phenomenon of charismatic gifts of healings (charismata iamatōn, 1 Cor. 12:9,28,30) and the attitudes of the Christian clergy of Tulsa, Oklahoma, toward the place of those gifts in their ministries in 1970. It is generally conceded that a ministry of healing is part of the mission of the church as a redeemed community called to extend the lordship of Jesus. In this study an attempt is made to define some of the constitutive elemtns of the New Testament phenomenon of charismata iamatōn and to determine the ways in which …

The New Indian Militancy: Its Roots, Its Message, And Its Significance For The Church, Victor Willmann Mar 1971

The New Indian Militancy: Its Roots, Its Message, And Its Significance For The Church, Victor Willmann

Bachelor of Divinity

The term "'Indian militancy" will immediately bring to mind in some readers the images of Black militancy and Black power. For others, Indian militancy may create impressions of direct-action groups, violence and intimidation. However, in using the term "Indian militancy" or its correllary term, "Red Power," this paper does not attempt to limit them to the narrow meanings ascribed to the corresponding terms of the Black civil rights movement. For the purposes of this study, Indian militancy and Red power will include those who advocate direct action through peaceful or disruptive means as well as those who are now beginning …

Twentieth-Century Lutheran Attitudes Toward War, Daniel Parsch Mar 1971

Twentieth-Century Lutheran Attitudes Toward War, Daniel Parsch

Bachelor of Divinity

This paper is an attempt to show the attitudes and ideas of leading Lutherans on the matter of war and the participation in war. The Lutheran Church has been, in the past, and remains an important part of the whole Christian witness. Therefore, the ideas of prominent men in this body are important for study in order to more fully understand the position which the whole Lutheran Church has taken in regard to this problem. In order to limit the scope of such a study, the paper will deal mainly with 20th Century attitudes. Likewise, the main Lutheran bodies to …

A Study Of The Doctrine Of Holiness In The Thought Of A. W. Tozer, Kenneth Leroy Friesen Mar 1971

A Study Of The Doctrine Of Holiness In The Thought Of A. W. Tozer, Kenneth Leroy Friesen

Western Evangelical Seminary Theses

Holiness, its true meaning and place in the experience of Christian living, has always been a special concern for serious, thoughtful Christians. It has been interpreted in the context of Holy Scripture, Christian history, and contemporary life, with the resulting beliefs usually dividing along denominational or theological lines. The Christian populace has naturally received its teachings about holiness from the lips and pens of its leaders . One such leader was Aiden Wilson Tozer, (1897-1963), a pastor of the Christian and Missionary Alliance, editor of "'I'he Alliance Witness," Bible teacher, and writer. His teaching on holiness was the subject of …

Michael Praetorius Creuzbergensis-The Man, The Musician, The Theologian: An Introduction, David Susan Mar 1971

Michael Praetorius Creuzbergensis-The Man, The Musician, The Theologian: An Introduction, David Susan

Master of Divinity Thesis

One particular focus of this paper will be Praetorius' theology of music, woven of the thread of coneio et cantio, sermon and song, that runs through the prefaces and dedicatory letters to many of his works.

The overall purpose of this paper is to make available in English an introduction to the music and thought of Praetorius, since most of the primary sources and much of the secondary literature are not translated. Material quoted in the text from German and Latin sources has been translated into English, and a translation of one important primary source, his Funeral Sermon, is appended …

Crisis And The Clergyman, Vernon R. Wiehe Feb 1971

Crisis And The Clergyman, Vernon R. Wiehe

Concordia Theological Monthly

As a minister views his pastoral role, he realizes he is on the front line when problem situations arise in the lives of his parishioners. There are frequent telephone calls in which people request counseling in the privacy of his study for a variety of problem situations. Often a casual contact with a parishioner results in a conversation that reveals deeply troubled feelings. These are a few of the indicators to any pastor that he is a significant person in the life of his parishioners, particularly at a time of crisis. Clergymen are also regarded on the front line in …
