Joseph Smith As A Jacksonian Man Of Letters: His Literary Development As Evidenced In His Newspaper Writings, Walter A. Norton
Joseph Smith As A Jacksonian Man Of Letters: His Literary Development As Evidenced In His Newspaper Writings, Walter A. Norton
Theses and Dissertations
This study examines the newspaper writings of Joseph Smith Jr., the Mormon Prophet, traces his development as an American writer as evidenced in his newspaper publications, and notes the major concepts contained therein which demonstrate that Smith may deservedly be called a "Jacksonian Man of Letters."
Emerging from his youth lacking even rudimentary writing ability, Smith began his development with the translation of ancient scriptural records. Literary experiences with other scriptures, historical records, and even grammar classes augmented his development. Smith later turned his attention to frontier newspapers and served briefly as an editor. Jail confinement provided further stimulus to …

Socioeconomic And Medicare Status Differences Between Elderly Church Service And Lds Private Pay Hospital Patients, Edward L. Soper
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to determine the kind and degree of differences that existed in the socioeconomic status and access to financial resources of elderly members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and to determine if differences existed between Church Service and private pay elderly hospital patients in economic status, type of housing, housing costs, marital status, sex, number and degree of access to children, savings and other assets.
Certain elderly members of the LDS Church were found to be significantly deficient economically because of inadequate income, low lifetime earnings and high medical expenses. Findings …

Religious Studies
Dear George: Peace!
Your request for my impressions on the 32nd General Congregation of the Society is here on my desk. A letter is a better form for my remarks. It indicates their character: personal, impressionistic, tentative, and somewhat hesitant. They come out of my random experiences and out of my own attempts to read these experiences. They draw into a unity my personal interpretation of the General Congregation, especially what it might mean for the Society within the United States. They are tentative because they possess all of the shaky particularity of the prudential interpretation, that amassing of so …

The Development And History Of The Seventh-Day Adventist Church In China Since The Communist Take-Over, Lien-Chieh Tsao
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
In evaluating the status of Christian religions in China today, this paper draws largely on unpublished sources. Since China is a "closed" country, accurate reports are somewhat limited and quite scarce. As a result, this thesis depends on unpublished memoirs of friends who were in China at the time and on correspondence and conversations with people who have made recent visits to the mainland. From these sources the paper attempts to describe the current condition of Christianity in China, trace some of the causative factors, and evaluate the potential for future mission work.
