Multi-national corporations are finding out they can't count on the church's silence. And Christians have discovered an effective way to witness to justice and compassion.
The Lutheran Church in America, for example, joined with 15 other Protestant and Roman Catholic groups in filing stockholder resolutions with five major U.S. banks.

"I'm disappointed the President didn't go further," said Dr. Robert Marshall, president of the Lutheran Church in America (LCA). He made the comment when questioned about President Carter's pardon of Vietnam draft evaders.
Dr. Marshall urged Carter to extend pardons to military deserters and to those given less than honorable discharges.

The U.S. Government Accounting Office (GAO) has reported that almost 3500 American Indian women were sterilized without their proper consent between 1973 and 1976.
Senator James Abourezk, chairman of the Senate Subcommittee on Indian Affairs, released the GAO's report. The subcommittee had requested the GAO study because Senator Abourezk had received many complaints that Indian women were being sterilized as a birth-control method without their knowledge or consent.

The Cult Of Liberation: The Berkeley Free Church And The Radical Church Movement 1967-1972 Volume 1, Harlan Stelmach
Collected Faculty Scholarship
The Berkeley Free Church was a major actor in the drama of church social action in the sixties. The emergence of the Free Church coincided with the high water mark of social action, and its dissolution paralleled the receding waters of church based social action in the early seventies. The and fall of the Free Church, as this study point out, indicates that there were forces outside the churches that were also dictating the ebb and flow of the waters of church social action. As much as the church activists were involved in social reform movements in the sixties and …

Albert Bandura And Ellen G. White: A Comparative Study Of Their Concepts Of Behavior Modification Through Modeling, Miriam S. Tumangday
Dissertations
Problem. One of the major concerns in education today is the improvement of behavior. Over the years various strategies have been proposed to modify human conduct. A careful review of these theories shows many similarities and divergences. Albert Bandura and Ellen G. White, two proponents from different eras and with widely disparate cultural and intellectual heritage, have strongly recommended modeling or example as the major factor in shaping human behavior. The present study sought to determine what, if any, similarities or differences exist in their modeling concepts.
Procedure. This investigation is a descriptive analytical study concerned with concepts …

George Q. Cannon's Views On Church And State, Lyndon W. Cook Sr.
Theses and Dissertations
Writers of nineteenth century Utah generally recognize George Q. Cannon's religious and political influence as second only to that of Brigham Young. Having occupied several positions of importance in the political arena as well as in the Mormon Church, Cannon is a major figure in Utah history whose life and thought merit careful examination.
This treatise is a study of George Q. Cannon's views on the institutions of church and state. After presenting a biographical sketch of Cannon's life, it examines his beliefs regarding the religious clauses in the First Amendment, and the place of revelation, positive law, and majority …

An Evaluation Of Evangelism In The Seventh-Day Adventist Churches Of The Southern California Conference, Russell Edward Johnson
An Evaluation Of Evangelism In The Seventh-Day Adventist Churches Of The Southern California Conference, Russell Edward Johnson
Doctor of Ministry Projects
Problem
The recruitment of new members is a major objective of the Seventh-day Adventist Church. Many of the departments within the Church compile reports including the number of baptisms which have resulted from their programs. Data from these departments frequently overlap, lack detail, and are of questionable value in evaluating the relative effectiveness of various evangelistic methods. An evaluation of current Adventist evangelism is needed to determine the relative effectiveness of evangelistic methods that the new members perceive as having influenced them to join the Seventh-day Adventist Church.
Method
The methods used divided the study into three areas: (1) the …

The Development And Evaluation Of A Program For Bible Evangelism To Be Used By Laymen Employing Small-Group Methods As A Basic Format, Johnny Durant Johnson
Doctor of Ministry Projects
Theologically in the Old and New Testaments the laity or "God's own people" are commissioned with the responsibility of communicating the gospel to the world in word and life. However, the contemporary Christian church finds itself under growing criticism for its failure to fulfill this commission. Although the gospel of Jesus Christ offers solutions to man's inmost needs an increasing number of congregations seem unable to meaningfully promulgate their message. This study contends that a chief weakness is the lack of genuine Christian life and fellowship within the churches.
What approach or means can be taken to encourage and stimulate …

Home, The School Of Love: A Seminar In Family Spiritual Enrichment, Robert Howard Cowan
Doctor of Ministry Projects
Problem
The families of the Seventh-day Adventist Church must develop deepening love relationships with God, with each other, and with people outside their own homes if they are to fulfill the will of Christ. Three factors may be hindering the development of love on these three levels : (1) a lack of understanding about what love really is, (2) a lack of understanding of how love develops in human and divine/human interrelationships, and (3) a lack of understanding that the home is the central focal point where this love is to be developed.
Methods
The methods used involved three phases: …

Towards A Ministry Model For The Single Adult Of The Seventh-Day Adventist Church, Edward Skoretz
Towards A Ministry Model For The Single Adult Of The Seventh-Day Adventist Church, Edward Skoretz
Doctor of Ministry Projects
In the Seventh-day Adventist church there is a percentage of adult members who are single. It is the purpose of this project to study the possible needs and problems of this segment of the church's membership with a view to the development of an approach in ministry to this group.
This project presented a survey of current comments and findings of literature with respect to certain problems that may confront the single adult. This survey of literature was limited to a consideration of whether peer-group association, loneliness, social pressure, anxiety, sexual morality, and marriage are indeed problematic in the experience …
Building Up The Body Of Christ: A Study In Church Revitalization Leading To Church Growth, Eoin Barnard Giller
Building Up The Body Of Christ: A Study In Church Revitalization Leading To Church Growth, Eoin Barnard Giller
Doctor of Ministry Projects
One of the most urgent concerns of the Church in the latter part of the twentieth century is to arouse Church members to their responsibility of ministering to each other and of ministering to the community in which they live. For too long the Church has relied upon a group of paid professionals to do the work of ministry. It was the purpose of this project to develop a theology and theory of church revitalization which would lead to church growth and which would apply the principles of Ephesians 4 in a local congregation. It was an attempt to orient …
The Seventh-Day Adventist Family In Japan, Warren Ivan Hilliard
The Seventh-Day Adventist Family In Japan, Warren Ivan Hilliard
Doctor of Ministry Projects
Problem
There are indications that failure on the part of Christian workers in Japan to develop a family-centered strategy of evangelism based on a balanced appreciation of the cultural integrity of that country has contributed to the slow growth of Christianity. The Seventh-day Adventist Church, while stressing the importance of the family, has largely failed to understand the Japanese family and to realize its potential for evangelism.
Method
The project was organized in two parts. As the Seventh-day Adventist family in Japan was seen to be first of all Japanese, a review of the literature concerning the characteristics and development …

A Relational Approach To Biblical Interpretation: Historical Criticism And Psychological Insights, Carol Joyce Schlueter
