The Authority Of Scripture, Kent S. Knutson Mar 1969

The Authority Of Scripture, Kent S. Knutson

Concordia Theological Monthly

We in the American Lutheran Church hope and pray that The Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod in Denver will take that step which is necessary for full altar and pulpit fellowship with the American Lutheran Church. As we understand it, you have already decided in convention assembled that the basis for such fellowship exists, but you must take this one more step. We are all acquainted with the complexities of American Lutheranism in the last hundred years, and we all know some of the misunderstandings and some of the real disagreements which have been among us in the decades of the past. …

Biblical Humanism And Roman Catholic Reform: (1501-1542) Contarini, Pole, And Giberti, Marvin W. Anderson Nov 1968

Biblical Humanism And Roman Catholic Reform: (1501-1542) Contarini, Pole, And Giberti, Marvin W. Anderson

Concordia Theological Monthly

Reginald Pole deserves careful attention by students of the Reformation period. Pole delivered one and shared in a second of three confessions which assumed Roman Catholic guilt for the splintering of Christendom. Adrian VI excoriated the Curia in his Instructio of Jan. 3, 1523, read to the Diet of Nuremberg by Francesco Chieregati.

A Comparative Study Of Koinonia And The Motivations For Evangelical Ecumenicity, Howard William Hornby May 1968

A Comparative Study Of Koinonia And The Motivations For Evangelical Ecumenicity, Howard William Hornby

Western Evangelical Seminary Theses

The constant use of the term "fellowship" as related to the concept of visible unity in the evangelical movement raised some questions as to the relationship of one to the other. The researcher wanted to obtain a thorough understanding of koinonia or fellowship as it was found in the Bible.

This concept of fellowship was then to be related to the motivating factors of evangelical ecumenism. It was the desire of the researcher to find if the concept of koinonia as it related to the concepts of the evangelicals to unite were compatible.

Laurentius Valla (1407-1457): Renaissance Critic And Biblical Theologian, Marvin W. Anderson Jan 1968

Laurentius Valla (1407-1457): Renaissance Critic And Biblical Theologian, Marvin W. Anderson

Concordia Theological Monthly

When Laurentius Valla penned those words, he was writing the fuse scientific treatise on Latin grammar since John Duns Scotus. Leonardo Bruni died in the same year Valla’s treatise appeared. The year 1444 marks the return of Renaissance scholars to a philological analysis of classical texts. This method, which Valla soon applied to Biblical study, revolutionized medieval Biblical scholarship in the century before Trent. Valla's purpose was to revitalize Catholic faith. Protestants and Catholics still owe their fresh awareness of Scripture to the labors of Valla.

The Church And State In Calvin, Bong Rin Ro May 1967

The Church And State In Calvin, Bong Rin Ro

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

The relationship between church and state has been a problem for many centuries and still is today. Coming from the Reformed background, the writer was first interested in Calvin's view on church and state in connection with Luther's view on the same subject encountered in the Luther Studies Course. The writer soon found differences of opinion among historians as to how Calvin considered the church in relation with the state. Further research led to the understanding that there are two main problems involved in this study: the separation between church and state and the interpretation of Calvin's democratic ideals.

Exodus 3:14 As A Word-Play, James Shaud May 1966

Exodus 3:14 As A Word-Play, James Shaud

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

This present study is concerned only with one particular relationship: that between a name and the word-play associated with it. Thus it is the structure of individual passages which is examined while the relationship of these passages to their literary units or oral background plays a secondary role. This then is not form analysis in the strict sense, though it is closer to this method than to any other.

The Tragic Sense Of Life: The Philosophy Of Miguel De Unamuno, John C. Morgan Jan 1966

The Tragic Sense Of Life: The Philosophy Of Miguel De Unamuno, John C. Morgan

Honors Papers

The major thesis of this research work has been that Unamuno’s life and writings can best be seen in terms of a philosophy of tragedy. Tragedy, in the Unamunian sense, means an agonizing struggle between opposing forces so well matched that no final victory of one over the other is possible. Unamuno wrote about and lived within this “tragic sense of life,” which consists of this agonizing struggle; and it is the centrality of this fact which can be demonstrated in his writings. Unamuno’s own life and the life of the so-called “Generation of 1898” serves as an introduction to …

The Influence Of Martin Heidegger On The "New Hermeneutic": Heinrich Ott's Use Of Heidegger, James Marquardt Nov 1965

The Influence Of Martin Heidegger On The "New Hermeneutic": Heinrich Ott's Use Of Heidegger, James Marquardt

Bachelor of Divinity

In the past few years theology has experienced a renewal in the area of hermeneutics. This renaissance includes more than a stimulating interest in the principles of interpretation, a periodic revival similar to those that have come and gone in other theological fields. Hermeneutics has broken the boundaries in which it has been confined since the age of orthodoxy and assumed totally new proportions, even to the extent of becoming the focal point of theology for some theologians. To trace some of the philosophical influences behind and in this movement is the proposed task of this paper.

Luther's Principles Of Teaching As Reflected In His Preached Sermons 1528-1532, Franklin Ritthamel May 1965

Luther's Principles Of Teaching As Reflected In His Preached Sermons 1528-1532, Franklin Ritthamel

Doctor of Theology Dissertation

This thesis will explore the educational development and teaching activities of Martin Luther against the background of the Reformation. It will bring some understanding of the importance of education in the Lutheran Reformation, the scope of Luther’s educational activities, the necessity of education for the success of the Reformation, and the objectives which marked the educational activity in the Reformation. It will show the theological development of Martin Luther and how this brought about educational reforms. This study is especially directed toward relating these items to Luther’s preaching in the period of 1528-1532.

An Inquiry Into The Nature And Worship Of God With Special Reference To The Second Commandment, Virgil Dunber Apr 1965

An Inquiry Into The Nature And Worship Of God With Special Reference To The Second Commandment, Virgil Dunber

Western Evangelical Seminary Theses

The problem considered in this study has been: Does the Bible permit the use of man--made images of God, or images that man might intend to represent God? This is related to the problem: Can an image created by man help man to know God?

The word image, in this study, has been selected to cover the wide subject of visual art work. Both statues and pictures are included, because no essential difference between statues and pictures has been found.
