’ΑδαπάΩ ΘςλέΩ (Agapáō And Philéō Romanized Form) In John, James Lindemann Feb 1976

’ΑδαπάΩ ΘςλέΩ (Agapáō And Philéō Romanized Form) In John, James Lindemann

Master of Divinity Thesis

The point in question is a hard one to settle, because the outcome depends entirely upon where one stands in his approach to the Bible in general and to John in particular. One may see a passage as demonstrating the simplicity of John, while another sees great subtlety and complexity, meanwhile a third sees nothing in the passage at all. Sometimes it’s because the person hasn't looked at all the data concerning the passage in question, and therefore needs to widen his outlook. One goal of this paper, then, is to investigate as much data and interpretations as are available …

The Meaning Of Resolution As A Reflective Method In The Philosophy Of Thomas Aquinas, Astrid M. O'Brien Jan 1975

The Meaning Of Resolution As A Reflective Method In The Philosophy Of Thomas Aquinas, Astrid M. O'Brien

Research Resources

While the importance of resolution as a reflective method in the philosophy of Thomas Aquinas is generally recognized, relatively little has been written about it, and the few articles devoted to it differ in their conclusions as to its nature and use. It is the aim of this dissertation to analyze the texts in which the term or its synonyms appear in order to discover its fundamental meaning and role as revealed by Thomas’s own statements and practices.

The first chapter notes the divergent meanings which the Latin term resolutio acquired through being used to translate several different Greek terms, …

An Investigation Into The Relationship Between Figurative Language And Biblical Typology, Thomas Mohr May 1974

An Investigation Into The Relationship Between Figurative Language And Biblical Typology, Thomas Mohr

Western Evangelical Seminary Theses

Excerpt: "Because of those who have taken an extreme position concerning typology, the subject has been either distorted or discarded. In both cases it has been very unfortunate. If it can be established that typology is a valid tool to use in studying the Bible, then "a great door and effectual is opened" to the Bible student . The problem is, has been, and always will be : " there are many adversaries ." The preliminary assumption of the writer was that typology is not unscriptual or dangerous ; rather the misuser of typology is the one that needs to …

Holy Spirit In The Now - I, Oral Roberts

Holy Spirit In the Now

From the Introduction by Oral Roberts:

This study on the Holy Spirit In The Now comes out of my personal experience and over 30 years of prayer and study of the Word.

It was through the generosity of my good friend, the late J. Arthur Rank, outstanding British businessman, member of the Parliament, and Methodist layman, that the Oral Roberts University’s first endowed academic chair on the Holy Spirt was established in the fall of 1972.

Because of his great interest in the Holy Spirit, Lord Rank determined to establish this chair at ORU. However, on the day he was …

Glossolalia As Practiced In The United States, Terry Eddington May 1973

Glossolalia As Practiced In The United States, Terry Eddington

Student Scholarship

This paper provides a historical and theological examination of glossolalia, commonly known as speaking in tongues, as practiced within various religious movements in the United States. The author begins by defining glossolalia as spontaneous, seemingly random vocal sounds uttered during prayer or uncommon psychological states, derived from the Greek words for tongue and to speak. The study explores the biblical precedents for the phenomenon, noting its absence as a practiced act in the Old Testament despite prophetic predictions, and its central role in the New Testament following the outpouring of the Holy Spirit on the day of Pentecost.

The text …

The Motive For The Christian Life According To The Epistle Of James, Paul H. Dorn Mar 1972

The Motive For The Christian Life According To The Epistle Of James, Paul H. Dorn

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

This study of the epistle of James arose out of a pastoral concern that members of the Christian community live their Christian discipleship. James is marked by its vigorous concern for Christians living a godly life; at the same time it raises a problem. The problem is that there is no motive immediately evident with which James encourages its readers to godly living--certainly nothing as evident as "by the mercies of God" (Rom. 12:1) or "if God so loved us" (1 John 4:11). The purpose of this study is to discover what the epistle's motive for Christian living is.

A Definition And An Application Of Some Hermaneutical Principles, Rodney K. Ruger Mar 1971

A Definition And An Application Of Some Hermaneutical Principles, Rodney K. Ruger

Western Evangelical Seminary Theses

Excerpt: "The purpose of this study has been to research the area of Biblical hermeneutics in order to gain a historical perspective upon which the author could build his personal practical system of interpreting the Bible.

This study has been limited to Biblical hermeneutics from the larger area of general hermeneutics. It has further been limited to the major historical representatives and schools of thought and the major principles which have evolved from these, because of·the vast amount of material which has been written on this subject. From these principles the writer has chosen the ones which he feels to …

A Study Of Matthew 3:13-17 -- The Baptism Of Jesus, Werner Boos Mar 1971

A Study Of Matthew 3:13-17 -- The Baptism Of Jesus, Werner Boos

Bachelor of Divinity

The fact that Jesus came to John the Baptist in order to be baptized by him fascinates and puzzles many Christians. The event evokes many significant questions: What was the exact nature of the baptism administered by John the Baptist? Why did Jesus submit himself to such a baptism? What significance did the baptismal event hold for Jesus' subsequent ministry? What did it mean to the evangelists and to their original audiences? How did it influence the Christian sacrament of baptism? These and similar questions prompt the present study--a study which takes as its exegetical point of departure the most …

Christian Humanism And The Reformation: Erasmus And Melanchthon, Carl S. Meyer
