The Babylon Of 1 Peter 5:13, Roy Schroeder Jun 1954

The Babylon Of 1 Peter 5:13, Roy Schroeder

Bachelor of Divinity

The problem discussed in this paper is the second one: Where is Babylon? Three theories have been advanced: “Babylon" is: (1) Rome, (2) Babylon in Mesopotamia, and (3) Babylon on the Nile River in Egypt. Each of these theories is discussed in a separate chapter. The wording of 1 Pet. 5:13 does not make it mandatory to say that Peter was in Babylon, wherever it is, at the time he wrote his first epistle. This is particularly true if the Egyptian theory is accepted. The greetings from the church ·at Babylon could have come through Mark. However, the natural thing …

The Contributions Of The Temporary Settlements Garden Grove, Mount Pisgah, And Kanesville, Iowa, To Mormon Emigration, 1846-1852, L. Robert Webb

Theses and Dissertations

For years the writer has been very interested in the history of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. His work as a teacher, employed by the LDS department of education, has been with the youth of the church. His teaching experience has taken him through a chronological consideration or sequence of events of the church from its origin down to the present. However, the absence of historical data during the period of 1846-1852 grew into a problem in the writer's mind. After reading in the histories of the church a brief paragraph about Garden Grove and Mount Pisgah, …

An analysis has been made of the Junior Group Grade Curriculum of the Methodist Church for the cycle beginning October, 1949, and extending through September, …

Religious Practices As Found Amoug Certain Natives Of New Guinea, Erwin Luther Spruth Jun 1952

Religious Practices As Found Amoug Certain Natives Of New Guinea, Erwin Luther Spruth

Bachelor of Divinity

This paper however, would be of no real value if it did not have a greater purpose in mind than merely listing the many, and varied beliefs of the New Guinea native. As the reader learns of the fear in the lives of these people, as he sees how all of their faith and action is directed by Satan, as he notices the hopelessness of their entire life, may the fact that our Lord Jesus also for these blind heathen and that they too must be brought to His love come to remembrance. If then these few pages bring one …

The Study Of The Bible In The Middle Ages, E George Krause Jun 1952

The Study Of The Bible In The Middle Ages, E George Krause

Bachelor of Divinity

There is quite a difference of opinion as to the extent of the Middle Ages. We will take the middle ground and roughly limit this era to the years between 500 A. D. and 1500 A. D. This procedure is to be preferred above others which begin or end an era with a certain person or event, because an era is not ushered in overnight, but is rather a gradual and often barely perceptible process. There will be a few instances in the course of this thesis where material extending a number of years either way beyond the above chronological …

The Historical Method In Biblical Interpretation, Raymond P. Surburg Feb 1952

The Historical Method In Biblical Interpretation, Raymond P. Surburg

Concordia Theological Monthly

The failure of exegetes to agree on hermeneutical principles is said to be one of the major causes for the divisions in Christendom, and, as Avey pointed out more than 25 years ago, American denominationalism will not disappear unless all bodies agree on basic principles of Biblical interpretation. Biblical scholars of the liberal tradition claim that the greatest obstacle to any agreement among exegetes lies in the continued use of the so-called dogmatic method inherited from the Reformers. Its advocates are charged that on the assumption that the Bible is divinely inspired and inerrant they employ the prooftext method in …

The Development Of The Youth Leadership Training In The Walther League, Samuel J. Roth Jun 1951

The Development Of The Youth Leadership Training In The Walther League, Samuel J. Roth

Bachelor of Divinity

It should be said that this paper does not attempt to give a complete picture of Walther League history. Many projects of great importance to the total League picture, e.g. Bible study, missions, the Hospice department, and the Talent Quest, have been omitted in the interest of focusing attention only on those endeavors which involved leadership training most directly. Moreover, attention is centered chiefly on international activities. To go into district, zone and society projects in great detail would necessitate a much more extensive study. However, frequent samplings of such localized projects are given, in order to keep the picture …

Language Training For Missionaries, Laurence Mcpherson Farr Jan 1951

Language Training For Missionaries, Laurence Mcpherson Farr

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Every foreign missionary is confronted with one basic task. Without its successful accomplishment his work as a missionary will fail. It is the task of learning the language of the people among whom he is working. However laudable his motives may be, however great his consecration, and however capable he may be in many tasks, if he fails to gain the ability to understand readily speech addressed to him or to communicate his own thoughts intelligibly and accurately to them, he is working behind a closed door — a door which he failed to unlock,

It is the purpose of …

Religious Beliefs And Practices At Irelya, New Guinea, As Reported By Natives, Willard Bruce Nov 1950

Religious Beliefs And Practices At Irelya, New Guinea, As Reported By Natives, Willard Bruce

Concordia Theological Monthly

Among the world's islands New Guinea is second in size only to Greenland. With 312,000 square miles, it is roughly equal to the combined areas of Wisconsin, Michigan, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, and Missouri. In two features of its physical geography it is unique. No other of the larger islands has such a great proportion of mountainous country; and no area of like size anywhere else in the world has such high rainfalls. No one knows how many people inhabit New Guinea, but the Australian Commonwealth Office of Education estimates that in the eastern half alone there are at least 1,050,000 …
